Vaz has always been below average on defense besides his arm. I've been nitpicking his every mistake for awhile now.

he needs to stop trying to frame every pitch in the dirt and just get it.

I'm worried about this for all teams. At some point, when a lot of your pitchers are not hurt but mysteriously underperforming, it makes me wonder what's going on. I think Bannister's approach to pitch repertoires has been reverse-engineered by other teams' analytics departments, and so we're a bit more predictable to them — not as much as if a pitcher was tipping, but enough to hurt.
No need to reverse engineer anything. Cashner told all the media how his plan was to throw a zillion changeups.

Honestly I think his defensive rep was overrated based on his success gunning guys down when he first came up.
He had huge framing numbers, especially in 2014. It seems like the league tightened that up, so the difference between better and worse framers is less than it was five years ago.

The number of times they swing at the first pitch after a guy walks someone on four or five pitches is nonsensical.

Typical Chavis strikeout. Catcher was patting for the ball 2 inches off the ground, knowing Chavis would swing.
