I’ll be on a flight, glad to miss this one live.

it’s a sad state of affairs that Bryan Mata can’t take this start.

I hope our starting pitcher gets hit squarely in the nuts with a 100mph line drive and gets removed from the game in the first inning. And honestly, karma wise the sox can lose this game too.

Game 63
100 games left: reality check.
Though we're 500, this team is a wreck.
Hard to see hope, even craning my neck.
We are a flawed team constructed on spec:
("This guy might pan out. Let's try. What the heck?")
A house of cards built from a damaged deck
with fewer All-Stars than the movie Shrek.
Our hitters, outmatched (Like Slappy Vs. Tek.)
Our pitchers, "branch work." (I got that from Eck.)
Tonight, a spot-starter makes us say, "Yech."
This guy's a loser. (Like that song by Beck.)
We stand opposed to such prejudiced dreck
(like Atticus Finch as played by Greg Peck.)
Hope Matt's gone fast like "red shirts" on Star Trek.
Now, I need a drink. Where's my triple-sec?

This is just preemptive, because some might not be aware.
If there is any political discussion about the piece of shit starting for the Sox tonight you will receive a vacation. Anything else works for me.

I'm cheering for late-inning heroics to win the come-from-behind game tonight!

Huh. Interesting stuff so far in this game thread.
May I still root for my team, The Boston Red Sox, to win the damned game?
OK. Geaux, Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having read more about the situation elsewhere on Sosh, I do understand people's outrage. I hope this guy doesn't get the start after all, or is dropped immediately after a couple of innings. However: a friend of mine once told me that she doesn't want to know the opinions and lifestyle of the athletes she roots for, because it is so disheartening. In most cases, we don't know. It is up to the athlete to wear his meanness on his sleeve. When he does, we see it.

I don’t get what Verdugo was doing on that play? Obviously not hustling, but I don’t get why. Which is why he’s getting benched, I suppose.

The ball was behind him and there were two outs, so his best argument (and it's not a particularly good one) is that he thought the play would be to first.

That makes sense, especially since he looked over his shoulder to see the play, and then his reaction after he was called out. No bueno.

Between this moment and the "lose weight" criticism, you wonder whether there's some disconnect between Cora and Verdugo. Not enough to keep him from playing, clearly, amd there's the old "10 guys who love me/10 guys who hate me" theory, but something nonetheless

This looks like that’s the case to me, but with the team struggling and wins at a premium, it’s a good rule of thumb to not assume anything and to hustle. There were a half dozen infield plays in last night’s game alone that prove that crazy things can happen.

Yes! Again, run hard on EVERYTHING. You let down your teammates when you don't.

Yeah, especially since once he recognizes the play is coming to 2nd he clearly sped up at the end (to no avail). He definitely should have been hustling the whole way, but as far as I can tell this was a one time thing with him, so unless there's something else to it, I just don't get this.

Asked if Verdugo was available off the bench tonight, Cora said he was not playing. Seems as the manager has drawn a line with some of the indifferent play of late.
It's all reflective on Cora. If his players are indifferent; his job is hanging by a thread. Maybe I'm wrong but he's pretty cozy with the guys and sometimes you gotta be the bad guy. These are well compensated pros; there is no room for laziness. There is always a young kid who will hustle. This season could spiral out of control in a hurry.

I just don't get Cora sometimes.

I'm sure Verdugo had a brain glitch just like almost every other player did, and, sure, you can come down on the guy like a ton of bricks. Perhaps more so than a rookie. So maybe he's the sacrificial goat. A message is being sent, etc. etc. But Verdugo has had some brilliant plays in RF and has gotten on 10 times in the past 5 games. Plus he's a good match for Civale.

It just feels weird. Like Cora getting himself thrown out between innings because he wanted to argue a pitch clock violation from the inning before.

Ah well, maybe there's something going on behind the scenes.

Maybe Devers is hurt but he consistently dogs it to first base. My view on the play in question is that it doesn't seem to warrant a benching. Now if you want to talk about throwing to the wrong base (Verdugo) and not backing up a play (Duran) then I think Cora has some legitimate complaints in that nightmare Tampa game. Maybe there is more to this than meets the eye.
