I'd hate to be that poor sap that was prattling on about Houck being ineffective at the end of yesterday's gamethread WATER.
Perhaps you refer to me? Pistols at dawn? (Nah, I won't be up then. Pistols at lunch, or gametime better for you?
Look, he has an ERA of almost 4. He is not a great closer, but he was very good right there.

20-4 in June

that’s decent
Off the top of my head, and I may be a game or two off, but I think thats a record of 30-11 in our last 41 (one "quarter" of the season or so) which I also think (without checking) is the best in the MLB during that stretch. They ARE good -- not a fluke. And going to get better.

Yeah. Yankees Shmankees.
I’m honestly at peace with the Yankees having a historic season. Not much anyone can do about that. Let the Yankees do what they do. The Sox just need to take care of their business and they will be fine.

Not only is 3.50 not at all "almost 4", but it also includes his starts. As a reliever it's 3.03, and that's heavily impacted by one terrible appearance. He's been great as a closer.

I believe when I looked it up last night it said 3.75. My attitude towards him is that if he has more nights like last night, bravo. Loading the bases in the ninth with the bottom of the order batters, however, is not what I am looking for in a closer.

Since moving to the bullpen full time on the 15th of May, Houck has an ERA of 1.19, a FIP of 2.50, a K:BB of 23:5, and a WHIP of 1.058 over 22 2/3 innings. This is with an absolutely sustainable BABIP of .300.

Since taking over as the closer June 10th, he is at 3.18 ERA with a 1.35 FIP, 8 K's and no walks. His BABIP in those games is a wholly unsustainable .471.

RP's are always volatile, but for now he looks really good in this role.

Ninth innings are hard. The other team sees its last chance and desperate teams actually may try harder. Is that possible? The other thing I think of is Yankee-Red Sox games. When one gets an early four run lead, it's nothing. The other one always seems to come back. Maybe they try harder because they desperately hate to lose to the other one? Back to the difficulty of closing games, it makes guys like Mariano, of course, Koji, Papelbon (gets some raised eyebrows) and Kenley Jansen gold.

If you can find a closer that never struggles and makes every save look easy I'd love to know who that is. He did what you're describing once, and then he got out of the jam.
