As a staff, the Yankees are striking out 27.8 percent of batters (the highest in the majors) and are third in the majors in ERA (3.47). That includes Green’s 9.72 ERA this season and the rotation of Triple-A relievers asked to substitute in throughout the season.

“There are three things that work,” Ottavino explained Saturday. “One, because we have so much depth, nobody’s really had to get abused. That’s a really important thing over the course of the long season.

“Two, everybody has different strengths, and we’re gonna be able to leverage those strengths. We have a really diverse group.

“And the third thing is just the ability to fire early in a game. Obviously, it’s great when your starter can go really deep, but when you’re in a situation where the starter has a high pitch count, we don’t have to necessarily have an inning where you have a subpar pitcher in there. You have a strong pitcher at all times, and it’s just obviously a really nice advantage.”

Ottavino said in one of these articles the last couple days that Betances is the best of them when he is healthy, which is probably true but I was still surprised to see him say it.

Ottavino also seems in agreement with how Boone is trying to manage the bullpen and keep it strong through October. And you were right, Jon. Cessa and Hale are the main backups tonight. Nobody is pitching three days in a row unless Boone relents due to extraordinary circumstances.

In other words, need a lot of runs off David Price tonight. Price has been Boston’s most consistent starter this season. He has some payback on his mind tonight. It is a juicy subplot.

Personally I would manage this one game differently from any of the others so far this season. If NY is winning or close when CC needs to be removed, my first choice would be to try to use Tanaka for the remainder of the game, but my second choice would be to use any and all of the top guys that they think can be effective for a third straight game. They have Monday off, they could give anyone who needs it Tuesday and even Wednesday off too, but tonight is a chance to really hurt Boston with another win.

Tonight means two games. I get that. Puts Boston 11 behind in loss column. But the Yankees were 14 behind in July 1978 and they came back by playing nearly .800 ball for six weeks. Boston will not be crippled by tonight’s outcome.
Boone is managing for 162 games. You are managing for one.

No, I'm thinking big picture also, those guys were rested coming into this series and they can be rested again after. But like usual, I am operating with a small fraction of the info that the team has.

Yanks might win anyway. When you’re hot, you are hot.

Any of you follow David Cone on twitter? He basically went on a following spree last week and started following thousands of fans. Now my entire twitter feed is filled with the tweets from those who he followed. Super annoying

Unless he is retweeting them, you can set your preferences so you don’t see that kind of notification from anyone.

These ESPN idiots (referring to the two men, I am OK with Mendoza) are in the normal booth instead of the Judge seats in RF as planned because of weather concerns, small blessings.

CC going for career win #250 today. I doubt he can go 5 but on the other hand, he has shockingly gone at least 5 every start this season so far.

You will not see too many games this season with two worse defensive right fielders.

ESPN announcer tells us there is a reason there are so many homers to right center.

And then never says the reason.

Oh god, haven't tweeted in sometime. Much as I adore Cone and what he brings to an oft-inane Twitterverse, RBI/Winz Joe don't add to my experience, unless you count the experience of purchasing additional Advil.

Been sometime, everyone. Simple birthday wish tonight. :)

Voit needs to realize that CC does not cover first, so he needs to let DJ try to field that.

Weird defense here in the second. CC might be the worst fielding pitcher in history, bad knee being a major factor.

That half inning looked a lot better for CC. Hopefully the hitters can settle down a bit and get after Price.

If you remember, it took a sweep of NY by Tampa right before the deadline in July 2016 to get Hal to sign off on Cashman's selling plan. I wonder if the last two starts (German last night and CC tonight) will have a similar effect on Cashman's decision to go after Keuchel or not, the draft compensation is gone as of midnight tonight.

Semi-squander, at least they got one. Clint better start hitting again soon or he is going back to Scranton.

There is a line of thunderstorms maybe ninety minutes away, would be brief but likely intense.

CC pretty settled down but possibly his last inning. Happy to get Price right back out there.

Clint's routes to balls look like Jackson Pollock paintings.

It has been said about a dozen or so times around here, but Frazier is unplayable in RF. I'm afraid they're going to break him.
