Scattered thunderstorms predicted for this afternoon in New York City. What should the Yankees do? CC could hurt his bad knee pitching in wet conditions. The Rays might bunt him to death, putting CC in a foul mood. Tampa is throwing lefty Blake Snell, who has shown only flashes of his 2018 Cy Young form.
Yanks lead the East by 2.5 games over Tampa. Minnesota is still the best team in the league, although it took the Twins 17 innings to beat Boston in a game that ended well after midnight. Those two teams will be exhausted for their series finale tonight.
If the Yanks pull the plug on today’s game, they will be well rested for the Astros.

Yandy Diaz onto the IL, unfortunately Meadows is back in the lineup for TB.

For NY, Stanton is sitting to start, day game after night game and they want to be careful with him after two months off:

LeMahieu 2B
Voit 1B
Sanchez C
Encarnación DH
Hicks CF
Torres SS
Maybin RF
Urshela 3B
Gardner LF

d'Arnaud C
Pham LF
Meadows RF
Garcia DH
Adames SS
Lowe 2B
Heredia CF
Choi 1B
Robertson 3B

This feels like an important game for the Rays. After this, they head off for 4 in OAK and 3 in MIN. Has the potential to spiral quickly into a mojo-killing road trip.

Definitely a big swing game, NY could use the extra cushion before digging in for 4 with the Astros.

Through August 4th, the Yankees really do have a tough schedule. It's mostly a mix of Boston, Tampa, Houston, and Minnesota with sprinkles of Toronto, Colorado and Arizona thrown in. A lot can change between now and then.

It may not be raining currently, but it is very humid, no surprise.

No one here to comment on Snell having absolutely no control? I sat down to watch at a bar during lunch and never thought it'd still be the first when I left.

And there goes Snell. Wow.

Do you think that's the reason - his toe? I guess something has to explain the fact he's been absolutely horrible for the past 4 weeks. He still can hit mid 90s on velocity but yikes.
Why not just DL him and get he and Glasnow back with fresh arms in July if that's the case?

I don’t know if it’s his toe, but ever since he broke the toe he has been pedestrian to bad. I don’t think the toe would still be bothering him, but I suppose it’s the kind of thing that could throw off your mechanics. He’s not the same pitcher he has been in the past.

In looking at his pitch selection between 2019 and 2018 his fastball use has gone from 51% to 41% and his curveball use has jumped from 20% to 30%. His velocity is virtually the same so what is the deal with change in approach?

I normally think this is BS, but now I actually think CC could be affected by this inning.

Also, Maybin > Gardner.

Today had nothing to do with approach - he couldn't reliably throw anything for a strike.

Snell has never done well in NY, even before his injury. Also he often struggles out of the stretch, that DJ check swing dribbler to start the game was huge.

Through 2, CC at 24 pitches and Poche at 34. That's not counting Snell. :)

I'm not thrilled that Boone is Holdering CC on the cusp of 250. I know he needs the work, and the lead is good, but still.

Holder puts the first two on, strikes the next two out, and then gets a fly ball to right.

Not the prettiest outing, but I'll take it.

One of those two was an Urshela error in his defense (although it was hit hard).

CIN sweeps HOU, who are struggling to score runs as they come to NY. They scored 7 runs in 3 games against CIN, Altuve came back today but Springer and Correa are still out and will not be back for the Yankee series.

Multiple six run innings in the same game is a happy thing, assuming they're both for your team.

You're a full fledged Cessa hater.
Heh, I wanted him DFAd in the winter of 2017-2018 and he has done nothing since then to prove me wrong. Maybe he can be OK somewhere else but NY has multiple better options and they need the roster spot.

TB doesn't even get a day off before playing in OAK tomorrow night, they really will need a huge game from Morton to save the pen.

When Brett's headfirst slide into first actually works, you know things are going well.
