Let’s lighten up on the Yankees’ ‘Big Boy’ lineup taking charge of the American League right away. Stanton returns Tuesday and might be game ready but the reality is he hasn’t seen big league pitching since April Fool’s Day. Encarnacion joins the team tonight but has rested a sore back over the weekend. Judge is a week away from being game ready.
And once these big three sluggers get into the lineup, how long will it take for them to regain their timing?
The immediate problem is this week’s schedule of Rays and Astros coming into town. Tampa is a road monster, 23-10 so far this season (just 20-18 at home). The Rays send righty Yonny Chirinos to the mound. He is their third best starter. Yonny is in a roll. He two-hit Boston over 8 innings in Fenway recently and followed up with six strong innings against Oakland. 7-2 with a 2.80 ERA, WHIP under 1.00.
Yanks counter with Masahiro Tanaka, on an extra day of rest. He has been rather ordinary this season. One bad inning often plagues Masi’s efforts. The only way he seems to pitch out of trouble is by giving up a big hit.
To beat Tampa, you have to silence their offense and out-bullpen them. Scoring a few runs would help.

The Encarnacion back thing might have been mostly made up to make sure he didn't get hurt while DiPoto auctioned him off, he jumped right on a cross-country plane as soon as he could to get to NY.

Good point. He has been very durable over the past decade. Just 137 games last year but averaged around 150 for the prior nine years.

Keeping an eye on those Twins this week. What has Rocco done to those guys? Did steroids finally reach the Twin Cities.
Let’s see if Boston can slow them down.

I am pretty confident Boston cannot slow them down. Imagine the Twins as the No. 1 playoff seed!
Fine by me. Call me crazy but there's too much Yankees vs Twins BS and it has to end eventually. I don't think I want them in the first round.

The AL is not nearly as top heavy as last year, despite having abysmal teams at the bottom. Rays, Astros, Yankees, Twins, and Red Sox are all heavy hitters. Oakland and Cleveland are still tough teams. Then the White Sox, Rangers, and Angels can all give you a tough match-up right now. It's still a tough league. NL on the other hand is open just because none of the wild card teams really stand out above LAD and The Brewers.

Although we will be here over and over again...11 out of next 27. I like hanging out with you guys, but this sucks. Although maybe better to get those games out of the way ahead of the trade deadline when you add Paul Bunyan and 1998 Mark McGwire.

Tonight feels like the start of the pennant race. Got a minor knot in my stomach, although that could be the pork chops I just ate during the pre-game meal.

Are they a good team? Yes. Are they willing to go out and make an Encarnacion type move to separate themselves from the Yankees and Sox? We’ll see.
Sometimes bringing up guys is the way to go, McKay and Franco are the names to come to mind.

Tanaka hanging a pitch every inning and getting away with it. So far. Still, pitching a 2-hitter thru 5 innings. If Tampa has any shortcoming, it’s on the offense.

DJ just stole a hit behind second and flipped to Didi for the third out.

DJ is the third baseman but he was playing right of second base in a shift Joe Maddon would have appreciated.

Maybin homers. 3-0.

Maybin has homered in three straight games. Gonna be hard to get him off this team.
I think that's what we really saw last night with Clint going down, Tauchman will go down for Stanton tomorrow and then NY will go to a 4 man bench when Judge is back, hopefully that will be the end of Cessa at long last. They have Tarpley and Harvey and Feyereisen waiting in AAA, long past time for Cessa to move on and disappoint somewhere else.

So the bench is Gardner, Maybin, Romine and whichever infielder is sitting. Likely Urshela. Hell, the 1961 Yankees were not this loaded.

I know the starting pitching has put a lot of pressure on the bullpen and will likely continue to do so, but a four man bench sounds mighty nice, even at the expense of a bullpen arm. By all means, get these hitters a little more rest if you can. Especially Judge, Stanton, Didi and Sanchez. Probably won't hurt EE too, especially if his back really is tweaked a little.

I think team composition is part of it, but Cessa and Maybin specifically have made it a pretty easy decision IMO. Neither has options, one has been awful yet again and the other has been quite solid (and seems like another great clubhouse presence), and NY has plenty of other reliever options if they want to go back to a 3 man bench later.

Gary Sanchez’s comeback from a dismal 2018 is pretty amazing. His defense has been great. He’s healthy and trimmed off 10 lbs of fat. And he’s going to start in the All-Star game.

That’s 7 strong innings from Tanaka. Great stuff tonight. Fans Choi on a split to end the 7th. 94 pitches. 2 hits, 7 Ks, 1 walk.

The interesting thing about Sanchez is that his pitch blocking is much better but it has really hurt his pitch framing, which is much more important although much less obvious.

Amazing job by Tanaka, wonder if Boone will let him go for the shutout.

It is a thought. Nobody warming, Kay says.
