I've watched the replay like 10 times and haven't the slightest clue what the home plate up was doing. He watches the ball trickle up the third base line for two seconds, holds out his arms in a "safe" motion, then points to indicate fair ball.

I think.....

Safe is "it didn't hit him."
Fair point is for fair ball. Umps don't point to foul balls. They raise their arms.

I think he was saying Alvarez was safe, as in the ball didn't hit him, and the ball was fair. But it was awkward, even if technically correct.

That's exactly what it was. Most fair/foul calls on the lines don't also involve the batter being hit by the batted ball.

12-8. This is really old-time Red Sox baseball. Lots of runs with very little pitching

Maybe Remy and OB ought to give Vasquez credit for being the *only* player on the field who knew *exactly* what was going on, instead of celebrating their own dumb-struckery.

Remy dying for a play-by-play guy who can actually lean into the wackiness of the game. O'Brien is such an energy vampire.

Dalbec with 2 strikes is like one of those oil-covered otters trying to order a pizza.

Remember, otters can’t talk and don’t have phones.
