I think the guy who heads at 0:09 was offside at 0:07 on the volley. Doesn't matter if he wasn't affecting the keeper, if he's offside on the shot he can't head the rebound without committing an infraction.

USA-France coming up at 3:00, streaming on Peacock.
Seems ticky tacky. There's a defender trying to block the shot with his leg extended towards the goal not more than a step from the goal area while the player who eventually heads the ball is trying to hold his position about the same distance from the goal area. The replay from Twitter is at a horrendous angle for making that call, but not sure if there's another replay floating around.

I mean, it's not like I'd expect either of them to take points off of France.
I worry a bit about goal differential, but realistically they always needed results against New Zealand and Guinea. I just worry in this format that they get grinded down into a couple low scoring games and then New Zealand advances on goal differential or something like that.

I should be more positive given they were able to limit France in the first half and had a bunch of chances, but that was a very frustrating game. They really deserved more, but they have to finish in the final third.

Prison sentence? I know, suspended, but is this a crime? Or an infraction that should be dealt with by the team, federation, or FIFA with fines and other penalties?
It was for the illegal use of a drone above 250 grams I think. Like driving without a license.

I was only able to watch the second half so I don’t have a ton of commentary but those xG numbers are tough.

There plenty of positives I thought, especially coming out on the losing end of a 3-0 score line. There was an obvious identity and style of play. You could easily see a path for the US to get a tie or even a win out of that game. That Djordje shot goes in or Lacazette’s doesn’t, and it’s a different game. The best scoring chance belonged to the US in Tolkin’s header. Lots of players had moments. I was impressed with Maguire’s nifty touches and I thought the fullbacks both brought more to the table than I expected. It certainly feels like they need Paxten to create scoring chances, and he looks able to do so. The CB pairing was unsurprisingly solid and showed why they were two of the overage players selected. Sure, Djordje had some unexpectedly poor touches and Schulte should’ve done better on that first goal, but it was encouraging.

That’s not to say France didn’t deserve to win. They did. If that xG figure TB posted above is correct, I’d say that points to the flaws in that particular xG model. One thing I do know, I don’t want Henry anywhere near the USMNT job.

I caught bits and pieces (like minutes 50-70) and thought the US were the better team. Finishers gon finish and that's what separates good from great, but this team was much better relative to their competition than the senior team that competed at Copa.

As someone who watched the whole game, this is consistent with what my eyes told me. But France finished on two great shots from outside the box, and the US missed at least three point blank chances.

We are on to New Zealand!

Spain 1-1 Japan just starting the second half.

After getting bashed 4-0 by Japan at the WC, Spain clearly studied Pep’s tactical fouling techniques to slow down the counter. Spain had 10 first half fouls to Japan’s 1 despite a 75-25 possession advantage!!!

The Zambian Women's team took the pitch against the US side with all the players making a hand to head motion that the announcers ignored. Was it some kind of protest?

USWNT no longer wearing the stars above the new crest, which isn't even a crest anymore. That double-stinks.

Edit: Some kind of IOC rule about badges being generic. Story here.

Imagine if Sanya Richards-Ross was a world class soccer player? That would have been cool to see

A red on that for being the last defender seems really harsh. (And if not DOGSO/last defender, that's a really insane call to make.)

Can 3-0 be a bad result? Up a player for nearly 60 minutes and you can't add to your 3 goal lead. Hopefully goal differential doesn't force them into a tougher game later in this tournament.

I’m not so worried. The bracket is set up such that the winner and 2nd place from group B go to the same side of the bracket:

Winner gets runner up group C
2nd gets runner up group A

Then you could get a group B rematch in the semis.

2 3rd place teams will advance, but obviously the hardest path forward.

I suspect both the US and Germany to play cagey in the next match - both would rather not lose than win so they can each go into match 3 with a chance to take the group.

Spain looked great today. Japan definitely has a formula that can work against Spain, but even then the Spanish side is so fluid and dynamic.

Canada's men's and women's soccer teams have relied on drones and spying for years, sources say

Coaching staff and contractors working with Canada’s men’s and women’s national soccer teams have been engaged for years in efforts to film the closed-door training sessions of their opponents, including during the women’s gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, sources told TSN.

DroneGate. If both men's and women's teams are doing why fire jusy the women's team coach?
Anyway, I fully expect Goodell to take away another Pats first round pick, out of habit.

Because the initial incident happened at the Olympics and she was sent home by the Olympic Committee, not the federation. The Canadian Fed then suspended her. Two others on the staff were sent home, including the one flying the drone.

Canada’s men’s team didn’t make the Olympics. They have an almost brand new staff for the senior team. Reports are that this was going on during Herdman’s time but we don’t know if it continued on. I don’t know about the rest of the program, but the Federation has to complete their investigation. They’ll probably want to handle their own discipline and not let FIFA get involved.

We’re going to the Argentina -Iraq match tomorrow in Lyon. The recommendation is to arrive 2.5 hours before the match for security.

Hope it’s not as crazy as the opener…
