That's 3! Book them for the gold medal game!

Spain showing us why no team has ever followed up a WC with a gold medal.

That sequence for goal number 3 was crazy, (assuming it holds)
I groaned when she hit the crossbar, thought they had spurned yet another chance.

Even if you took away the own goal, Brazil could easily have 5 so far. They have run roughshod.

The decision of the second attacker to pass the ball rather with her head than trying to score on her own showed a lot of composure there, I thought.

Brazil's keeper has cried wolf so often in this tournament, it's hard to believe it any time she goes down.
Saw Kristine Lilly talk with my daughter back in 2018 and she said the Brazilian team was the one that most embellished injuries in order to draw calls. Seems like things haven't changed.

LOL. What did your daughter ask?

It was a soccer event in Montpelier VT. I don't remember who asked the question but she did find it amusing and gave up that nugget somewhat sheepishly.

California. Duh.
In 2011 Abby Wambach's equalizer in added time of extra time of the World Cup quarterfinal was possible because Brazil had spent most of the previous 15 minutes rolling around on the ground any time an American came within 3 feet of them.

No clue how US-Brazil is going to play out. Brazil is surging now, they have all the momentum and confidence. If today is any guide, they are going to press the US hard and high, really force the issue. I'm worried about Horan...

There's 8 Brazilians in the NWSL, so there will be a lot of familiarity among players on the pitch. It will be intense.

In the last 10 minutes of regulation, the ref did one of my least favorite things - called advantage when there wasn't much of an advantage and the foul occurred near the box.

Like don't call advantage when it is 3v3 after our player gets hacked to the ground.
Just to go back to this: That drove me crazy too. What they're supposed to do is initially call advantage, but then if an advantage doesn't materialize, you call the foul and give the free kick. We'd have much rather have had the free kick from the edge of the 18 than... whatever the hell that turned into.

The reffing in soccer is pretty terrible. But I can forgive an error of judgment, foul / no-foul, etc, much more than I can forgive a failure to enforce the rules when you're not under time pressure or having to make a snap judgment.

I mentioned this in tonight’s Olympics thread, but I just upgraded my class C weightlifting final for Saturday night, to the gold medal match at Parc des Princes. My wife has some good friends at the American embassy in Germany that had an extra ticket for the game, and I lucked into it. Super-excited for it!!!

I’ll be at the game as well! Shoot me a PM if you’re interested in grabbing a drink beforehand outside the stadium.

Spanish keeper completely wrong-footed on the opening goal for France. Overcomitted near post on a shot from 10 yards out and couldn't get enough of the far-post shot.

That looked like a dive live to me. But I’m also full of beer, wine and sun exposure from a morning pétanque session.

And buried it

They are both fighting. That guy wasnt getting. The ball

Edit - to me a crappy call. The French player had much contact. A PK on that rumbling on s corner is ridiculouis

Not a bad summer for the Spanish men’s program. The Olympic roster obviously left a lot of talent at home and brought only 2 overage players, Sergio Gomez and Abel Ruiz, neither of whom is more than role player for their clubs. Compare that to France who brought Lacazette, Mateta, and Bade.

I wonder how much US Soccer is taking a serious look at Thierry Henry. I’m unimpressed despite the silver.

Still leaps and bounds better than Deschamps.

LFG. Any chance they start Albert over Coffey? (And I love Coffey, probably the Olympian (of any sport) whose college games I've seen the most in person)

wow, interesting. Not sure I agree with this strategy. Rose as a super sub isn't the worst weapon to have though, should that creativity be needed.
