SP Dalvinson

Wanting to see more Cason, Ilan & Tavano, less Noria/Linarez.

Side note - the FCL Sox used to have 2 Brito's listed...Edwin & Josue. It showed Edwin as a late addition to the team. Josue was ok last year (108 wRC+ in 132 PAs, 20.5% bb, 23.5% k), but was a bit surprised at his inclusion, so I wonder if that was some sort of clerical error & they had the wrong Brito listed originally.

05/01/25 OF Josue Brito assigned to FCL Red Sox from DSL Red Sox Blue.

05/03/25 OF Edwin Brito assigned to FCL Red Sox from DSL Red Sox Red.

SP lists Josue as being on DSL Red.

Rough start to the game for Dalvinson. It's hard with these things to really know what's going on, but it looks like he has potentially met adversity he has not previously & is struggling with the concept.

He hit the 1st hitter (a 21 y/o on rehab assignment after playing last year in High-A), who then stole 2nd. He got a tapper to the mound, but then a 23 y/o who played in High-A doubled off him & stole 3rd. & then he stated walking a bunch...& then he walked the next 2 hitters on 9 pitches before allowing a single on the 1st pitch to the next hitter. Sac fly, another 5-pitch walk, & a groundout put an end to the 3-run 1st inning in which the FCL Rays batted around, & in which Dalvinson allowed more runs than he did all of last season.

Dalvinson came back out for the 2nd, but was pulled after a double & a wild pitch. Final line in his FCL debut: 1 IP, 4 ER, 3 hits, 3 bb, 1 hbp, 1 wp, 0 k.

He was just as flummoxed by the Celtics as the rest of us.

The Mikey at 3B thing is interesting.

In his first 19 games of the season, he started at SS 13 times, 3B 3 times, DH 2 times, and 2B 1 time.

In the last 6 games, including tonight, he will have 4 starts at 3B, 1 at SS, and 1 at DH.

This would not be noteworthy if Portland had called someone up who pushed him down the defensive spectrum. AHBRAM has been getting a lot of that run at SS, but Karson Simas also has a start there & Max Ferguson tonight.

So...my best guess is that they envision Mikey as the potential 3B of the future.

One other Mikey thing...it's way too early for this to mean anything definitive, but he was awful against lefties last year. & he has been very good this year in a 19 PA sample size...

'24 v. LHP: 9-55, 3 bb, 14 k, 1 2b, 1 3b, 1 hr, 2 RBI, .480 OPS
'25 v. LHP: 4-14, 5 bb, 6 k, 1 2b, 1 3b, 0 hr, 2 RBI, .974 OPS

Also, it's worth noting he's still only 21, & every single PA he has had this season has been against an older pitcher.

Interesting timing on the 3B thing in light of Devers refusing to play 1B & disgruntlement.

The MiLB page lied about The Hologram. Hopefully that means he's next up, though.

I don't enjoy watching Blake Wehunt pitch. Probably a me issue.

Blaze Jordan has both hits for the Sea Dogs so far.

I guess I can stop watching Wehunt now.

4 IP, 2 ER, 2 hits, 5 bb, 4 k

76 pitches, 40 strikes (52.6%).

Now I can watch Zach Bryant band pitch...not sure I am going to be doing that for long, though. & not just because of the leadoff walk.

Roman battled back from down 0-2 against Andrew Painter and worked a 7-pitch walk. Which demoralized Painter so much he walked Mayer on 4 pitches.

Zach Bryant pitched 3 hitless innings, but allowed a run on a walk, sb, groundout & sac fly. 2 bb, 1 k.

Alex Hoppe in for the 8thin a 3-3 game.

Darvin Garcia is a rough watch. Noah Dean left in the 5th with a runner on 1st & 2 outs.

Garcia managed to allow the inherited runner to score & 2 more of his own, without allowing a ball in play...walk, wild pitch, walk, wild pitch, run-scoring balk, strikeout.

Even with that run, Dean still had a good game: 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 2 hits, 1 bb, 9 k (79 pitches, 49 strikes).

Greenville is losing 3-2 in the 6th.

Hoppe pitched a scoreless 8th but allowed a run in the 9th & Portland was down 4-3 headed to the bottom of the 9th.

The 1st 2 got out in the bottom of the 9th, but Caden Rose singled & Mikey Romero hit a gapper to left center to tie the game.

Headed to extra innings tied at 4.
A combo of Hoppe & Gabriel Jackson allowed 5 in the top of the 10th, & it could have been worse if not for a bases loaded double play to end the inning.

Lower WHIP on the day than Bello. Not sure how the rangers didn't manage to score today, quite the tightrope Bello walked (eh? Eh? I'll see myself out)

Wehunt turned out to be far less problematic than lots of other pitchers this evening, so that's cool. I guess.

Bill Mueller 2.0? We can hope!

I think another dynamic in the shift to 3rd is that the Sox are already stacked at SS, with Mayer and Arias (and Story)

So Arias and Romero continue to just hit huh

very nice
Bleis showing signs of life, too.

They could graduate three top 10 guys this year and still go into next year with like 7 guys in the top 100.

After trading three top 100 guys away.

It's crazy. Still need to start seeing results in Boston, but the idea of "sustainability" is starting to show signs of life.

That's true, but that isn't really new information... except maybe the speed at which Arias is coming.

There are definitely things to be excited about. Who are your 7?

I guess if I was to do a 7 it would be: Arias, Tolle, Clarke, Romero, Valera, Perales, Bleis

As we recall, Salem scored 4 in the top of the 9th to take a 9-7 lead... but then promptly allowed 2 in the bottom of the 9th to send it to extras.

I'm a member of the Arias fan club, but he's still so far away I doubt they are making decisions on other players based on him. There's still a significant chance he maxes out as a utility bench player or emergency depth.

The idea that we might have 4 pitchers in the Top 100 is nuts to 2023 me.

I don'tcdisagree with this, but I feel like the chances of him being in Portland by this summer arecrising every day, and at that point the "so far away" argument melts a little.

But you are right, it isn't likely they are making any personnel decisions based off of him right now. Would not be surprised if he is penciled in to their 2027 planning guide, though.

Sure, I'll concede he is two steps away (continue to produce in A+, produce in AA) from being not so far away.
:)

Regardless, Arias should have 0 impact on having Mikey primarily play 3B right now. It is at least a bit interesting to me, though, that Blaze played 32% 1B last year, & is playing 72% this year, & Mikey is playing mostly 3B the last week or so, when the corners are where they have potential depth issues at the moment. It feels kind of like they're trying to find a lane for them each to be useful in case of an emergency as soon as this year, & potentially as part of the plan for next year if things break right the rest of this year.
