Yoshida was never making it to second on that play.
Sure. He thought it was caught and it was bang bang, he made the right play. The question seemed more directed at a less bang bang play, and just standing there is a really bad strategy, assuming the 1B has any clue.

I went back and watched the play again and there is no chance Yoshida even knew what happened. He dove back to the bag because it looked like a line drive that was going to be caught.

Weird play!
This is likely the case, but I am going to credit Yoshi with a stellar, lightning-fast, rule-book-guided, mensa-type ninja-like move to avoid the GIDP and extend the inning because there hasn't been a lot of other offense to enjoy thus far.

Agreed. And you know, I wouldn’t say it was a bad play by the first baseman, but it wasn’t very heads up. He’s got two easy outs right there, but screwed up the sequence.
It’s weird to hear Youk say he’s never seen it, because it happens in little league a lot!
