Nobody Cares
Canada lost another of their great rock stars this week, the inimitable Tim Bachman of BTO fame. So while the Sox have certainly been taking care of business, I want to remind everyone that you ain't seen nothing yet. A mere week ago, a sweep would have seemed unthinkable. Well, except maybe for this guy....

Big 4-game set. If Boston sweeps, they'll overtake Toronto in the standings.
Yep, I quoted myself to start a gamethread. Deal with it!

Bryan Bello toes the slab for Boston, trying to build on his 5 inning 1 run gem against Cleveland. Kevin Gausman goes for Toronto, and while his numbers look good, he can be rattled. After this game, the Bosox will roll on down the highway to get a jump on their 3-game set in Philadelphia. So remember, it's a 6:10 start, y'all!

A sweep seems like too much to ask, and yet here we are. Too bad they'll be hitting the road just as the weather is supposed to get nice this weekend, but they've done just fine in the gloom.

Way too early to worry about it for real, but a win tonight puts them over Toronto for 3rd place in the standings. That would look nice as an aesthetic from a progress standpoint.

Since the sweep in that dump in St. Petersburg, the Red Sox have gone 13-6 while scoring 113 runs in those 19 games. They also surrendered 92 runs so it's not all rainbows and butterflies....but the pitching has certainly improved compared to to first 13 games when they allowed 73 runs and hopefully reinforcements provide even better results.

Ya know, that Brasier fellow looks to be in good shape. The best of his life, it seems.

These past 2 and a half weeks have been a lot of fun. No matter what happens going forward, it's been great, may it continue as long as possible.

Why is this game at 6pm? Just because both teams are going to Pennsylvania doesn't mean this shouldn't be a 1:35, or at least 4:10, game. 6:10 is a weird compromise between ticket sales and a getaway time.

Game 33
Crazy day here. There’s not much time to write.
(Not quite as crazy as the game last night.)
There was no stopping the scrappy Red Sox.
Hits pounded pitchers, and bounced off of rocks,
ripped fast into gaps and trickled through shifts,
and dropped between Jays to pop up as gifts.
15 in all, with each man coming through.
Our offense clicked like the Celts in Game Two.
An 8 to 3 win. That’s 5 in a row.
3 straight vs the Jays with 1 more to go.
It’s far from the best Sox team that we’ve seen,
but it feels a bit like 20-13:
unheralded players doing their parts
to win hard-fought games while winning our hearts.
This team’s as fun as their lineup is deep.
Got the split. Got the win. Let’s get the sweep!

ERA in the 1st inning

Bello: 12.00
Gausman: 9.00

Make sure you are in your seats early for these two guys.
Gausman's overall ERA is 2.33, so it sounds like he's basically given up nothing after the first inning.

Tapia leading off and no Verdugo. Sure looks like a punt job. But the way things have been going who knows? Hope for the best.

The Sox are known for not setting early game times on getaway days. I don't know why, perhaps a bigger gate for later games? Here is a link to an older article referencing late getaway day start times.
"The Sox themselves don't always help themselves out; Boston doesn't give out a lot of getaway day games for opposing teams, so the Sox don't get many back from the opposition."

Verdugo is the only position player to play in all 32 games. Might have something to do with sitting one out before they hit the road.

Yes sir, thank you very much for this sine qua non to game day. NESN needs to quote from these, as they are 10x better than any commentary they've got going. Jarred Carrabis? Yuck. You? A++

I like to know what the Red Sox record is in getaway days with Cora as the manager. For some reason I think under .500?

Following the conclusion of tonight's game, the Red Sox have a 40 minute flight to Philadelphia and the Blue Jays have an hour flight to Pittsburgh. They'll all be tucked in by midnight or shortly thereafter. And let's not forget that games are mostly under 3 hours now. No real need for either team to have wanted an afternoon game given the short trips for both.

As we all know, weekday afternoon games are impossible to find parking for!

In chartered flights too.

Letting Verdugo have a breather is a luxury you earn when you take the first 3 of a 4 game set. Who knows, maybe Tapia bangs out a couple infield singles or gets ahold of one.

That'd be nice, but I'm not exactly gonna bet the farm on it happening.
