NY back home for a 1 PM Memorial Day game against the rarely visiting, youthful, exciting, Padres led by our old buddy Manny Machado.

NY is again trying Chad Green as an opener even though it keeps not working, then presumably David Hale will be the long guy.

It's hard to knock a manager who just won 6 of 7 on a road trip, but I hated the way Boone used the bullpen this weekend, his 4 best guys for 4 innings Saturday night and then a refusal to go back to any of them even once NY tied it in the 9th yesterday, essentially conceding the game. Ah well, onward...

I do like Hale, though, hopefully Green can keep SD off the board before that.

2B LeMahieu
1B Voit
CF Hicks
DH Sánchez
SS Torres
RF Frazier
3B Urshela
C Romine
LF Gardner

Paddack/Paxton looking like the Wednesday matchup, that would be a fun one to go to.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Green try to go a bit longer with how good he looked in the first inning, but NY seems to script these things out and not be flexible based on results.

I mean, I get that Hale is warming already, they maybe want him to start an inning as opposed to coming in mid-inning, but I still don't like it. This is the part of pitching staff management I think NY still hasn't figured out, how to switch from the plan coming in when circumstances call for it.

Unlucky in that the first hit that inning was a sub-60 MPH bleeder through the shift, but lucky in that Kinsler could have scored easily there and just didn't for some reason.

Hale was great after an initially shaky inning, he retired the last 10 guys he faced. Then Boone pulled him anyway and went to the 'best four relievers for the final four innings' plan, all or nothing in the bullpen these days.

One more run and maybe they will go with Harvey or Cessa to try to close it.

Nice win, now NY gets a bit of a break before a night game tomorrow and then another 1 PM start Wednesday.

On opening day we had no plausable 3rd baseman, were not sure who was going to be at the other corner, and I detested the frontrunner for the position, and we brought back a veteran who even I thought was going to retire. We have had nothing but a ridiculous streak of bad luck injury...and we look...wonderful.

That formula is the key to this team’s success. Getting Betances back will provide some elite depth to the Final Four.

Yeah, I hate using all four of those guys in the same game unless it's a crucial game, but Betances' return will help a lot there. Kahnle has been fantastic, I wonder if Ottavino has had anything to do with that as I hypothesized all winter.

Both New York State guys, right? A lot of the success so far seems to be the residue of great design by the GM and his baseball ops people.

Not sure where Kahnle grew up, but they are very good friends from when they were Rockies teammates.
