Sabathia is having yet another strong campaign leading into retirement. He's a solid back of the rotation option who is going to give you 4-6 good innings and he's going to keep you in the game. Like previous years, he flames out quick, you can see it almost immediately when he's done for the night. Dan Straily is 1-3 with an 8.51 ERA. He also hasn't completed more than 5 innings in a month and only lasted 3 1/3rd his last time out.

Again, the Yankees should be heavy favorites.

Today, I want to highlight Giancarlo "8 more years" Stanton. I love the guy, I love his work ethic, and he is arguably the most important player on the roster. A hot bat from Stanton takes this lineup from great to otherwordly. Yet, his Yanks career so far has been littered with streaks and boos and despite a good 2018, I think it's fair to say he was expected to do a lot more this year. That was, of course, before April and May were lost to him.

We hope to see you soon, big guy. We need your bat to replace Gardner's as soon as possible.

You’re not allowed to say the Rays can’t beat good teams (even though they’re 9-10 vs teams above .500 and have lost 3 of 4 to 1st place teams this week)

Who said that? The Rays are a good baseball team. Are they a 1st place caliber team? We won't know for another 120 games, but they have played like one this point in the season.

You can say whatever you want, but not sure what your fixation is on this. As I said before, there are only six teams in the AL above .500, TB is certainly not an outlier.

HOU 17-14
MIN 8-8
NYY 8-8
TB 9-10
CLE 4-6
BOS 5-8

More relevantly, TB just lost three catchers in like a week and are using two guys who were just DFAd elsewhere (D'Arnaud and Kratz) plus Glasnow is a big loss for a team that was only using three SPs. Also they didn't come out of nowhere, they were really good down the stretch last season.

I am getting a weird 1978 vibe about this season as the Yanks build an early lead over the defending champs. The roles are reversed. 1978 taught all of us that even a 14-game lead in July is not enough, especially if the second-place team is filled with players who have won championships.
The thing about 1978 is NY and Boston were clearly the two best teams in baseball that season. In 2019, Houston might be better than anyone. And Tampa is a pain in the butt.

I'm enjoying this but I really wished there were fewer brutal teams in baseball. This isn't good for the sport.

There are really just three currently, BAL, KC and MIA. The only other team under .400 currently is WAS, and they are loaded on paper.

Brutal inning, that could have been way worse. Got to score more runs now, day game tomorrow too.

So I've been trying to figure out who this Brian in the booth for MASN is (I haven't seen the beginning of a broadcast). I had to scroll a while but I found it - it's our friend Brian Roberts. He's pretty good too, not too homerish.

Score more runs or Boone will use all four top relievers tonight.

Thairo can do it all in the field. Infield defense this year has been stellar. And versatile. DJ at second or third is great. Torres has done well at short, filling in for Didi. Thairo came up and played left field, a foreign position for him, and then third and now second. Fundamentally sound and poised.

Jeez, they wouldn’t trade Thairo and Clint for Bumgarner, would they?

Chapman looks absolutely terrible and has no command, but there are two outs and no one on.

And now a walk. Of course.

Yikes, thought that was a tying HR off the bat. Unimpressive stuff from Chapman, but he leaned on the slider and got it done. Fin.

Britton wasn’t available today (they say he will be tomorrow) in case anyone thought Boone actually got better at managing a pen.

And CC’s knee needs another cortisone shot, he is missing at least one start. Yoiks.
