Frederick Alfred Porcello III vs. Gerrit Cole.

Here's a fun fact. Cole is married to Amy Crawford, who played softball at UCLA (my alma mater, so a soft spot exists!). Crawford's brother is Brandon Crawford, the Giant's shortstop. Small world.

Partly cloudy at game time, temperatures in the high 60's. Getting on to baseball weather.

We won't have to see Jose Altuve, but here's some Asters facts:

  • The Asters lead the majors with a .282 team batting average. The Twins are second at .262 and the league average is .244.
  • The Asters lead the majors with a .354 on-base percentage. The Cubs are second at .346 and the league average is .319.
  • The Asters lead the majors with a .512 slugging percentage. The Twins are second at .495 and third place is the Mariners at .462. The league average? .418. The Marlins are in last at a pitiful .307.
  • The team OPS+ for the Asters is 131, which is better than that of Justin Turner Paul Goldschmidt, Ronald Acuna, Manny Machado, Bryce Harper and a host of other studs.
In addition, they own the best record in baseball at 29-15, have the best run differential by a mile (plus-87, with the next best being plus-62) and have the longest current winning streak at eight games. As far as the pitching goes, they are sitting with the second-best ERA in the AL heading into Thursday. Suffice to say this team is awesome.

So on paper, it doesn't look great. However, you don't play the game on paper, so let's win the damned thing.

Finally, today is the birthday of Sox-for-a-minute Carlos Pena, and actor/ director/ photographerDennis Hopper. I leave you with this, to get you ready for the game.

I wonder if we'll see the Sox disguise their pitching signs as aggressively as they did in the ALCS. That was something else. Anyone know if other teams have done it when playing the Astros this year?

The trouble with using asters in your perennial garden: they can be very aggressive. I had to pull mine out, which killed me, as they were so pretty. Good if you want a monoculture.
I would like the Sox to defeat them, but they must be rigorous and highly focused.
Geaux, Sox!

Maybe the thread starter is trying to say that the Houston team is a bunch of little flowers this year, but, unfortunately, they aren’t. Beat them.

Asters are a sold team with an ax to grind. Last year's ALCS was the really good playoff baseball, game 4 especially. The best thing about game 4 is that it was Houston's game. Relentless comeback pressure in tight games is what they beat the Dodgers with in 2017, and the Sox won that game last year.

Anyone know why no JBJ? Managers decision or banged up?

Nunez at DH is not giving the Sox much - might as well have JBJ in CF and get plus OF defense all around.

Going to the game tonight. Will do my best to ensure the correct team wins. The Red Sox did pretty well against these guys seven months ago. Hope to see it continue.

Watching MLB.TV and IT is going to be broadcasting from Fenway tonight. Looks like rain happening at the ballpark. Any local weather prognosticators with predictions?

The rain will be stopping soon. Maybe some scattered showers around first pitch, but I don’t foresee a delayed start or any delays once action starts.

"After watching the Patriots win and with the Red Sox beating us last year, there's no other city that I would like to beat more this year than Boston” - Bregman.

Shut this clown up.

A brief Friday afternoon (west coast time) anecdote indirectly involving Gerrit Cole.

I'm in a long-running fantasy baseball keeper league. One of the league's traditions is for me and a friend to write up "analyses" of the first round or two of the draft, somewhat in the style of what you'd see on a real sports blog after a real league draft but generally with more literary references and dick jokes.

The year in question, a new owner joined the league and picked Cole in the first round. Not knowing the new owner, I wanted to make a joke that didn't drag either the owner or the wisdom of the pick. So I ended up writing: "I am opposed to this pick on aesthetic grounds. 'Gerrit' is not a name; it is a sound that an old-timey prospector makes to his horse. Parents of America, please stop saddling your children with prospector gibberish names."

Turns out the new owner's infant son was named Gerrit.

I later edited the post to the Nathan Fillion finger-waving meme.

10D might contemplate changing his approach. This swinging at the first pitch thing is getting old. As the lead off guy the job is to get on base. At least to start the game take a couple. If the pitcher is off on any given night you might get on base the easiest way possible - via the walk.

Off the bat it seemed like it was hard enough to be either a home run or foul but I guess not.
