All of your picasa albums that you set available online would have become g+ galleries, and linked to your account. The full pictures exist in the Google cloud.

The phone is fantastic and it's a pentaband phone that will work on any GSM network you'll run into.

The only catch I can think of is you don't have roaming. But I use Google Voice as my primary phone number, so I can (and have) dropped a $2/day AT&T SIM in my phone when well out of T-Mobile range and just forward to that SIM's number instead. If you go out of range often enough, the $50 prepaid AT&T GoPhone plan is probably a better deal because of coverage.

The reason it sounds "too good to be true" is because cell phones have been an ongoing scam for a very long time. I mean, it is hard to underestimate the scam that the AT&T and Verizon shitbags have perpetuated upon a largely unsuspecting consumer base. The bill of materials for construction of an iPhone 5 is $200. It retails for $600. With a plan, it's even more (relative to the cost of a fairly equivalent prepaid plan). The Nexus 4 has a BOM a little higher than the iPhone 5, and sells for $300. Google is doing something here to take on the insane markups and US-style postpaid plans; it sounds too good to be true because Google is trying to fix it.
Thanks for this. I just checked some of T-Mobile's coverage maps.
AT&T's equiv prepaid plan with 1G max data is $65/mo: http://www.att.com/s...paidplans.html.
Hmm. I also use Google Voice but not exclusively.
I could find AT&T prepaid SIM cards for $100 with a 1-year expiration - where did you get yours?

Sounds like the big catch is coverage and it depends where you go - for me the choice is keep Verizon w/ its typically best coverage (I'm paying about $90 a month) or switch out to T-mobile or AT&T at $30 or $65/mo.

Yeah I understand how the US postpaid phone subsidy is crazy, I would have bought an Orange San Francisco a few years ago if I had done any research into US prepaid plans then. Don't get me started on the market distortions that US wireless carriers cause in part because barriers to entry are incredibly high. A personal nit is the long canned voicemail greeting to make callers use up minutes. But it's not all peaches and fuzz abroad either - US customers paid little for local landline calls for a long time.
Anyway I'd love to have a GSM phone I could swap a sim card into, if the total cost of ownership with plan is cheap. I could just buy the Nexus 4 and then switch to AT&T if T-mobile's coverage doesn't work for me. Thanks

If any of you use the Smooth Calendar widget and wonder why your battery has been like a sieve these past couple of days I'd recommend uninstalling for now. Was to the point where it was pinning my CPU and interfering with basics like the dialer. Lame, as it was one of my go-to widgets.

Do any of you spend time customising your home screens etc with launchers? Or do you stick to the stock screen and just add widgets? I've had a Galaxy Nexus for 6 months but haven't bothered to customise it yet then I saw mycolorscreen.com and now I can't resist the urge to beautify the phone.

I also have GN, and three days ago I downloaded Nova Launcher (the paid version) so that I could put shortcuts by swiping on the dock icons. for example: I have my phone app on the doc, but if I swipe up on it, it directly dials my house. Similar to the text icon... swipe up and it starts a direct text message to my wife. In addition, you can swipe left or right on the dock, and be able to put more shortcuts. It's nice having everything I use frequently within a click or two rather than going through the app drawer.

I used to have Launcher Pro on my old phone that had the same functions, but I think the developer abandoned the app.

I'm not so much enamored by all the custom home screens that people make (or more accurately... I'm too lazy to do the same), but there's some cool functions in the custom ones that aren't available in the stock launcher.

I also have the pro version of Nova launcher and I really like it. Little things like being able to click on any icon and go right into the app properties/uninstall screen are great. Nova is super smoother on my year old Galaxy Nexus too.

I mean it quite literally. Stock Android used to have an option for all sounds to be muted between certain foods. Mine were 11 to 7. Extremely handy for bedside chargers such as myself. Jelly bean seems to either have eliminated this option or hidden it so I needed v to download a 3rd party app to do it.
I can't find it either, but the volume control app is pretty good and makes scheduling silent periods pretty easy. Between what foods do you want it to be silent?

So Nova Launcher is smooth and whatnot? I use GO Launcher and I'm thinking it might be causing some system instability on the RAZR MAXX (non HD variety).

Worth the paid version?

Go makes shitty stuff imo. Their launcher and keyboards are both laggy as hell.

My phone is a year old and Nova actually made it feel faster. Well worth it imo.

I just upgraded to JB. For the most part I like it but a couple of my apps don't work as well anymore. For example, I have an app that lets me control my music with headphone buttons and now whenever I hit the button it redials the last call. Is this a matter of waiting for apps to get updated to be more compatible? I've gone through all of the settings and nothing has worked.

Speaking of headphone buttons, I won a pair of Sony X headphones from spinner.com. They're awesome, but the headphone buttons supposedly only work for iPhones and iPods, and only newer iPods (my 9 year old iPod classic won't work with the headphone buttons). So, is there an app out there that will allow me to use the buttons to at least control the music on my GS3?

The button on my headphones does the same redial thing on my HTC One X (currently on ICS 4.0.4). If there is a setting post it here I'd like to have it even if it's just a play/pause.

Thanks, Foulkey. I migrated everything over to Nova tonight, and it feels good. I don't need prime just yet; the free app is working fine so far.

My phone feels much snappier. We'll see how it works in real life tomorrow.

I downloaded an app called Headset Button Controller and it fixed the problem. It automatically inserts a dummy call with no caller ID so that the redial isn't triggered. So far it's worked great.

I got the OTA update to jellybean today and i'm trying to figure out what is going to work and not work. Right now it keeps telling me I have 59 text messages unread even though they are all read. I suppose i should just delete them?

I am loathe to do this, but I guess I have to give VZW credit, my changeover to JB has been relatively smooth.

I wanted no part of one of those huge-ish phones, and I'm moving on from Apple, so I settled on Razr M for my first Android.

A few times I noticed not having a retina display in the first few hours, but I don't notice it anymore... everything else I completely love.

Going to pick my way through this thread tonight.

Got a G Note II yesterday.  Loving it so far, however it feels big at this point.  So getting used to going from one hand to two.

Only thing I don't like so far is you can only do split screen with certain apps, so unless I'm missing something, there is a bit of limitation there.

If anyone has been waiting for a deal, I got mine through LetsTalk.com for $199.  Verizon upgrade, already on a family plan.  Real easy.

There is a mod available to run multi window on all apps.

My SII was acting funny this past weekend so I brought it into the AT&T store - after reflashing the phone they gave it back to me and said "no luck". My intuition was that the power button was either stuck or broken and since it was out of warranty, the AT&T store didn't put much effort into fixing it. The phone is only 16 months old, so I was a little pissed that 1) It was broken and 2) they wouldn't fix it for me. So I said "fuck it" and decided to upgrade. I ended up getting an SIII from customer service overnighted to me for $199.

So I got off the phone with customer service and decided to whack the back of the phone on the edge of the table to get the button loose and the phone started behaving normally again. So I'm deciding to keep the SIII and try and get some money back for the SII - what is the best way to do this? I've looked on eBay Instant Sale and can get $118 for it, are there other options?

Anyone have a decent app that does sound profiles similar to a blackberry. On my S3, I have 'Sound Profile', which seemed like it used to work fine, but at some point (perhaps after the JB update) doesn't quite work for all apps. It still seems to vibrate even when everything but calls are turned off, and certain apps (facebook seems to be one) will still make noise.

I would look at selling it directly to somebody (Craigslist?). You should get at least $200, possibly more, for a GSM S2.

If it's carrier-locked (did they carrier-lock the S2?) that might go down there.

If you root it, you can get an app from the Play Store called "GalaxSim Unlock". It should be able to remove network lock and thus increase the value/usefulness of the phone. It also means you can sell a rooted phone on eBay, which is often more valuable.

Any suggestions for an app to keep track of travel plans: flight numbers, times, hotels, car rental, telephone and confirmation numbers for all? Samsung Exhibit 4G but runs Android 2.3.6

Thanks for the TripIt info. While I do not have to worry about LinkedIn (it's not spam?) contacts, others might benefit from knowing that.

It's not spam, but for a while my activity feed when I signed into LinkedIn was like 80% of one guy's TripIt actions and it crowded out things like people getting new jobs.  Of course now the "added skills" built-in feature crowds out the feed, so back to square one.  But this isn't the LinkedIn thread.

So...wtf at AT&T not pushing out the 4.1 update for the HTC One X.  Fooled me twice now with your non-updating phones (original Galaxy S).  Going to switch one of these days.

Does anyone use the weather.com app and made the mistake of updating it recently?  The new version is awful but I can't figure out how to go back to the old version.  If I didn't back it up, is it gone forever?

I work for the weather channel and I don't use the damn thing.  I think it sucks big time.  Best weather app I've found so far is http://1weatherapp.com/ and it what I use personally.

If you really want the actual weather channel forecasts you can use the weather channels intellicast ap (different brand same forecasts and is developed in an andover based office) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wsi.android.intellicast
This one just got an overhaul so I've haven't tried it out yet.

I liked the old app because it had a good widget.  As long as I can see the forecast easily in the morning before I leave for work that's all I care about.  This new version is awful.  It's basically one big Toyota ad.

It seems like Samsung phones are getting to the point that Apple appears to be at. There's just not a lot of places to take it at this point with hardware changes.

Possible improvements:
1080P resolution - I honestly see no real reason for this over 720P, but it's more or less guaranteed at this point, I don't think there's any reason to ever go past this either in the future for devices under 5".
Higher resolution camera - Again, I see absolutely no reason even for MP increase on the 8MP that the S3 has now. I'd rather have shorter focal length for better low light pictures and/or bulletproof software for faster focus and shots.
Bigger Battery - seems hard to push while keeping device size extremely thin and the phone light, I'm willing to sacrifice both slightly for something that's ~3,000 mAh instead of ~2,000 but not at the expense of it being unremovable
Wireless Charging - Seems okay in concept, not sure how much I'd really use it, I'd probably by one charging stand for bed side, but that'd be about it.

iPhone improvements I'd want Apple to make:
Larger screen - something in the 4.5 - 5" range would be nice
Removable battery - never happening
Wireless charging?
NFC - I actually would LOVE Apple to do this, if only because I think it would accelerate adoption by merchants.

Where else is there to go with these phones in all honesty?

We're obviously going to see them continue to push new processors that are faster (though I'm not sure we need it) with better efficiency (definitely needed for better battery) and better GPUs (again, I think we're edging toward a flattening curve as far as how much you can actually get out of a 4 - 5" device).

I am an absolutely tech geek, but that's about all I can really see being pushed through hardware (outside of the X Phone's rumored 'unbreakable display') rather than major improvements coming from software changes at this point.

I'm in the same boat as you. To assuage some of your fears, the blue GS3 is a lot nicer-looking in person than in images (more of a greyish slate blue than sky blue).
