Boxscore

A mixed bag for Ranaudo, who was victimized by an error but didn't exactly do himself many favors. He goes 4 IP with 4 R (1 ER) on 4 H, 4 BB & 7 Ks. In the 1st, he whiffs two after a 1-out walk. Following a lead-off double in the 2nd, he strikes out the side but walks another batter. The 4th was a 1-2-3 inning punctuated with a K.

But the 3rd pretty much sucked. A walk and an RBI single by Ronny Cedeno, during which Cedeno made it to 2nd after Lavarnway muffed a throw from the cutoff man. Ranaudo retired the next two batters, but then walked Reid Brignac and gave a 3-run shot to Cameron Rupp.

that's now 4SB and 1CS over 2 games for Vasquez.  Not drawing any conclusions or anything, just something I'm keeping an eye on when I scan the boxscores.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

It took the Pawtucket Red Sox 14 innings into the new season to score a run, but once they got going, they turned it on full speed.

Pawtucket’s first scoring inning of the season produced eight runs Friday night, carrying the team to a 9-4 victory over Leigh Valley. The game was shortened to 7 1/2 innings because of rain.

The offensive outburst came out of nowhere. Pawtucket had no runs on only four hits in its first 13 innings. Lehigh Valley, which won the opener 4-0 Thursday night, again was ahead 4-0 in the fifth when it started raining, both literally and figuratively. Rain began falling from the sky as the PawSox were raining runs in their big fifth.

The first seven hitters reached base. Christian Vazquez doubled, Corey Brown walked and Mike McCoy doubled into the corner in left scoring both runners. He moved to third on Brock Holt’s line single to right, one of four times Holt reached base (two singles, a double and a walk).

Holt’s hit ended the night for Lehigh Valley starter Barry Enwright. Kyle Simon came on to make his Triple-A debut and promptly threw a wild pitch that allowed McCoy to score and make it 4-3. Simon walked Alex Hassan and Ryan Lavarnway to load the bases and then walked Bryce Brent, too, to force home the tying run.

Simon finally got the first out of the inning by striking out Dan Butler. That brought up Garin Cecchini, the third baseman up from Portland who is known for his batting eye. Cecchini did not work the count this time. He drilled Simon’s first pitch for a double to right-center, scoring two and putting Pawtucket on top, 6-4. Vazquez kept it going, singling to left for the seventh and eighth runs of the innings.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The 21-year-old second baseman is 7 for 9 in his first two Double-A games, with three extra-base hits.

“I got a lot of info when I was in the (big league camp),” said Betts, who doubled twice and singled in five at-bats Friday. “I picked their brains and learned some things. They gave me some things to think about and I brought it here.”

Betts isn’t alone in his assault on Reading pitching. The Sea Dogs collected nine hits on a cold, damp night.

Sean Coyle had two hits, including a solo homer in the second that put Portland on top 1-0. Coyle also had an RBI single in the three-run sixth that saw the Sea Dogs break ahead.

Betts hasn’t let the lousy April conditions deter him.

“If you’re gonna make it to the big leagues, it’s gonna be cold there, too,” he reasoned. “You can’t think about that.”

Betts seems headed in that direction. He was the Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year last season when he batted .316 with 36 doubles, 15 homers, 65 RBI and 81 walks in 127 games split between low Class A Greenville and Class A Salem.

He helped lead the latter team to the South Atlantic League championship, batting .341 in 51 games at the end of the season.

Sea Dogs Manager Billy McMillon, Salem’s manager a year ago, isn’t surprised to see Betts come out swinging like this.

“He’s doing what we hoped, what we expected him to do,” McMillon said. “He’s having good at-bats and he’s putting good swings on balls.”
SALEM

Game Story

It's a new season, but Salem has used the same recipe of superb pitching and timely hitting to continue its winning ways. Behind William Cuevas, Austin Maddox, and Dayan Diaz, the Red Sox shut down the Pelicans in a 4-0 triumph on Friday night at TicketReturn.Com Field. Not only has Salem gotten off to a 2-0 start for the first time as a Red Sox affiliate, but the defending Carolina League champs have now won their last 13 games dating back to last August. Since July 30, Salem has gone 32-8.
A scoreless game through six innings, the Sox finally broke through thanks to some heady baserunning from Ryan Dent in the seventh. One night after belting his first career grand slam, Dent drew a one-out walk and scored without another hit. He stole second, took third on a passed ball, and scurried home on a wild pitch to break the scoring seal.
Up 1-0, the Sox provided a healthy insurance policy with a three-run eighth. Reed Gragnani's first Carolina League hit was a triple into the right field corner to lead off the frame. Matty Johnson's sacrifice fly doubled the lead to 2-0. Jonathan Roof followed with a double to center, and the overall advantage multiplied to four when Carson Blair clocked a towering two-run homer over the left-field bleachers.
The late-game offense was more than enough for the trio of righties who joined forces on the six-hit shutout, with all six Pelican knocks being singles. Cuevas authored six scoreless frames, scattering all those hits, while Maddox and Diaz were both perfect out of the bullpen. Maddox, a third round pick in 2012 out of Florida, dominated with five consecutive strikeouts to begin his two-inning outing. Diaz followed by punching out a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth, securing the premier shutout in the Carolina League in 2014.
DRIVE

Game Story

Greenville pitching didn’t go so well Friday night as Kannapolis came out swingingto grab a 7-2 win to even the first series of the season at one game apiece.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Intimidators took advantage when Drive starter Jamie Callahan (0-1) struggled with his control. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out, and a walk to Tyler Williams brought in the tying run. A walk to Danny Hayes and a hit-by-pitch of Jacob Morris brought home two more runs and ended Callahan’s evening.

Kannapolis starter Tyler Danish (1-0) picked up the victory with five innings of work.

The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Jake Romanski tripled and later scored on a passed ball.

Romanski scored the only other run for the Drive, as he drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
