Betts is leading ALL of minor league baseball with a .448 average.

And his current 44 game on-base streak has an "insane line" of (according to Alex Speier) .429 with a .492 OBP, .673 slugging mark, seven homers, 25 extra-base hits, 21 walks, 16 strikeouts and 17 steals.

That's just sick.  Every day I check on his stats and shake my head every time, usually mumbling something like "yup, another 2 hits!".

The kid is 21 years old.  What's an easy way (or are there articles that have already been written) to compare this 44 game stretch to other similar stretches?  Especially with age attached to it?  Or heck, just throw in all of last year until now.  I'd love to see the names that pop up.

Ted Williams reached base in 84 consecutive games from July 1 through September 27, 1949 (and for good measure, and he also reached base in 16 consecutive plate appearances, September 17-23, 1957).

De la Rosa cruising early: flyout, groundout, K, K, K, K, 32 pitches, 20 strikes. Only gun reading the PawSox radio announcer passed along was a 96-mph fastball for the third K.

Edit: And Mookie leads off with a single for Portland. Eat Sleep Rake Repeat.

Mookie Betts moved up to lead off position, and singles first time at bat.  Make it 45 consecutive games on base.  Scored later in the first on a hit by Swihart.

So far, Betts is doing a good job of bouncing back from his disappointing 2/5 line yesterday. 1/1 with a walk and steal so far tonight.

Just for the record he's been leading off all season, seems to have been doing very nicely there.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

The Rochester Red Wings sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the seventh inning to make up a 5-1 deficit en route to a 7-5 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Tuesday night in front of 3,070 fans at McCoy Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

The PawSox (11-8) took a four-run lead into the seventh behind two home runs from Brandon Snyder (4) and a stellar starting pitching performance from Rubby De La Rosa. Rochester then took command against relievers Dalier Hinojosa and Rich Hill with five hits, three walks and two Pawtucket errors.

The first five batters in the seventh reached against Hinojosa (0-1) on a triple, walk, RBI double from Chris Rahl, fielding error and RBI single from Deibinson Romero that made the score 5-4. Hill then entered and walked two of the first three he faced including James Beresford with the bases loaded to tie the game.

The next batter was Chris Parmelee, who lined a sharp RBI single to left field scoring pinch-runner Doug Bernier with the go-ahead run. After a Hill strikeout, Brad Nelson grounded an infield RBI hit to shortstop to plate Dan Rohlfing with the sixth run of the rally.

Rochester reliever Yohan Pino (3-0) retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced, nine of them on strikeouts, to earn the victory after four innings of two-run ball. Red Wings starter Logan Darnell allowed three runs, two earned, with six strikeouts in five innings.

De La Rosa earned hard-luck no-decision after tossing six dominating innings, allowing only three hits and one run with seven strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander has now permitted only three runs in over 23 innings pitched this season.

Snyder's solo home run led off the second to open the scoring against Darnell, then his two-run opposite field blast to right against Pino made the score 5-1. Pawtucket also scored runs on a Dan Butler sacrifice fly and a Darnell fifth-inning balk.
SEADOGS

Game Story

With the EL’s hottest offense slowed down for one night, Kurcz combined with two other Sea Dogs relievers to hold the Mets scoreless over the final 52/3 innings of a 5-3, 11-inning victory.

Matt Spring, who had struck out his first four times up, hit a two-run homer with none out in the top of the 11th to decide the game. He lifted the Sea Dogs to their sixth straight victory and a league-best 12-4 record.

Kurcz came in to work between strong efforts by fellow relievers Michael Olmsted and Robby Scott.

The 23-year-old, right-hander got a called third strike on Binghamton clean-up hitter Matt Clark, the first batter he faced, to start the bottom of the eighth inning. After allowing a clean single to center field, Kurcz blew third-strike fastballs past the last two hitters, reaching 96 miles per hour on the scoreboard radar reading.

“He handled it like a pro,” Sea Dogs pitching coach Bob Kipper said. “He pitched with confidence. We all saw what we saw.

“It’s pretty obvious that he’s healthy. It’s pretty obvious that he’s strong. It’s pretty obvious he was ready.”

Kurcz, who came to the Boston organization from the Chicago Cubs as compensation for Theo Epstein becoming Chicago’s president of baseball operations, worked just one inning. He threw 15 of 19 pitches for strikes.

“He showcased an explosive fastball, demonstrated by the three strikeouts and six swings and misses,” Kipper said.
DRIVE

Game Story

Asheville used a pair of home runs Tuesday night to beat Greenville 4-2 in front of 5,179 fans at Fluor Field.

Pat Valaika’s solo shot in the first and Ryan McMahon’s two-run homer in the sixth provided most of the offense in this game. Five Asheville pitchers combined to limit the Drive to five hits though Greenville drew five walks.

All in all, the Drive weren’t that far away from a win.

“(Sergio) Gomez threw great,” said Drive manager Darren Fenster. “Three of the four runs they score off him come on home runs. Both of them were change ups that he left up in the zone.

“Those might have been the only two mistakes he made all night. Just goes to show you that you’re talking about a game of inches, and if he gets those balls down then maybe it’s a different game.”

Like Monday, Greenville (9-7) found itself down a run after a half inning. The Drive once again responded to tie the game in the last half of the first.

Carlos Asuaje led off with a walk and moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches by Tourists starter Johendi Jiminian (3-1). Tim Roberson got Asuaje in with a ground out to short.

Yes, of course, Betts has been leading off.  My mistake.  At the time of my post, I was mutli-tasking with looks at both Betts and another 2B prospect in Wendell Rijo, who bats 8th and there was discussion of moving him up in the order.

edit to correct something I "mis-remembered" ( 20 runs scored for Mookie, not 30)
