Not here
I'm hoping he's with Pawtucket when they come down to Charlotte in August. Henry Owens day is a good day.

After his 2-4 performance tonight, Blake Swihart is hitting .349/.364/.512 in 43 at bats.  A small sample size, but a great start to the season so far.

Back-to-back dominant outings by Kukuk. 15/2 for the K/BB ratio in 10 innings.

Any word on why Coyle left after 1 AB? Hopefully not another injury. He's off to such a good start.

Wendell Rijo, the 4th youngest player in the Sally League, with another homer. What's the guy have to do to move up in the batting order. He's been batting 8th all year.

No story up on the SeaDogs site yet. He was replaced defensively in the bottom of the third. The log indicates no obvious plays involving him in the 2nd. He was running the bases in the top of the second... so I am going to guess if anything happened... it happened then.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket scored the tying and winning runs on a crazy wild pitch in the sixth inning and three relievers held the lead with four scoreless innings as the PawSox defeated the Buffalo Bisons, 4-3, Monday night in front of 4,124 fans at McCoy Stadium to earn a split in the four-game series.

Shane Victorino (1-for-4) and Will Middlebrooks (0-for-3, 2 strikeouts) each played a portion of the contest for Pawtucket as part of a MLB injury rehab assignment. The PawSox (11-8) jumped over the Bisons (9-7) back into first place in the International League North with the win.

Brandon Workman made his second start of the season for Pawtucket and struck out eight batters in five innings of work. He allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits and did not walk a batter.

With Pawtucket trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Buffalo starter Marcus Stroman (1-2) allowed one-out singles to Bryce Brentz and Garin Cecchini and was pulled from the game in favor of reliever Rob Rasmussen, who quickly uncorked a wild pitch to put runners on second and third.

With Christian Vazquez at-bat on a 3-2 count, Rasmussen delivered ball four which skipped past the catcher Erik Kratz and reached the backstop. Brentz scampered home from third base, and Kratz's throw towards the plate evaded Rasmussen's reach as he tried to cover. Cecchini scored the winning run on the play, which was ruled a throwing error charged to Kratz.

Tommy Layne (3-1) earned a victory for his third consecutive appearance by tossing scoreless relief in the sixth and seventh. Chris Hernandez, moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen earlier in the day, recorded two outs in the eighth including one at home plate.
SEADOGS

Game Story

Henry Owens allowed two Binghamton Mets runners before he recorded his first out Monday night for the Portland Sea Dogs.
In one pitch, the infield got him out of trouble with a triple play and Owens worked with a lead the rest of the way.

The Sea Dogs scored at least six runs for the ninth time in 10 games to help Owens remain unbeaten in three decisions with a 7-4 Eastern League victory against the Mets.

Third baseman Sean Coyle fielded Brian Burgamy’s sharply hit grounder near the line, stepped on the bag and sent the ball to second base.

From there, Mookie Betts made the pivot and got the ball to first baseman Travis Shaw to complete the triple play.

“Right when it was hit, I knew we had a shot because it carried Coyle over to the bag,” Owens said. “When I talked to him later, he said he took a step to his left before the pitch, but he anticipated anything to his right, he was going to try to get three because the runner wasn’t that fast.

“It’s kind of bizarre.”

Sea Dogs Manager Billy McMillon said he had seen a grounder turned into an around-the-horn triple play on ESPN’s SportsCenter, but never in person.

“That’s such a rare play that I don’t think you can ever plan for it,” McMillon said. “But in practices we do work on that play where the ball is hit to the third baseman and he steps on the bag. He had the wherewithal to go ahead and try to turn it.

“It was a big momentum boost for us. It was the first inning, it killed a potential rally that they might have had going with the No. 3 hitter up and two runners on. It was something (Owens)could draw on and got him a little more comfortable.”

With the league’s top offense leading the way, the Sea Dogs have won five straight and 9 of 10 games for a league-best 11-4 start.

Betts is leading all of minor league baseball with a .448 average after going 2 for 5 – which actually lowered his average –with a double.

He also made his contribution to the triple play.

“Mookie did a real good job on it at second base,” McMillon said. “It was a low throw.”

Shaw also had two hits, including a homer, and Blake Swihart matched Betts with a single and double. Shannon Wilkerson also hit a homer for the Sea Dogs, who are batting .308 and averaging 5.87 runs per game.

Owens retired eight straight at one point and only allowed two hits while holding Binghamton scoreless through five innings. Working with a 5-0 lead, Owens allowed three runs, two earned, in the sixth before leaving.

Noe Ramirez and Miguel Celestino, who worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save, finished off the combined five-hitter.
SALEM

Game Story

Luis Diaz pitched six strong innings and six different Red Sox drove in runs as Salem took three of four games from the Dash, finishing with a 7-1 victory at BB&T Ballpark on Monday.

Once again, the Sox got the offense going early as Carson Blair launched a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Matty Johnson doubled to lead off the top of the third and came home after a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Roof to make the score 2-0.

Aneury Tavarez tripled home Kevin Heller and Mario Martinez singled home Tavarez to double the lead to 4-0 after four innings.

The offensive output was more than enough for Diaz (2-1), who surrendered only three hits, two of which came from Adam Heisler. The third hit was a one-out triple by Joey DeMichele in the bottom of the fifth inning, which led to the Dash’s only run as Mike Marjama drove DeMichele in with a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-1 after five.

Salem put away any doubt in the top of the seventh as Matty Johnson tripled home Ryan Dent, and then scored when Roof reached on a fielding error to make the score 6-1. Roof doubled and scored in the ninth on an RBI single by David Chester to end the scoring.

Brad Goldberg (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Winston-Salem, surrendering four runs on four hits, a walk and five strikeouts.
DRIVE

Game Story

Timely hitting and a good eye at the plate helped Greenville start its home series against Asheville with an 8-3 win Monday night.

With 3,043 fans watching at Fluor Field, the Drive took an early lead and then capitalized on five walks to pull away late.

“We win that game because we stick with our approach in the seventh inning,” Greenville manager Darren Fenster said. “We didn’t go out of the zone. Five walks lead to two runs.

“The guys did a good job preparing and having a feel for the type of pitchers that were coming out there.”

Greenville used those walks and a big hit to put away what was a one-run game. Two Asheville relievers walked five batters, leading to runs scored by Jordan Weems and Bo Greenwell. Manuel Margot then singled to drive in Tzu-Wei Lin and Kevin Mager to make the score 8-3.

“My approach at the plate when you see a guy struggling is to make him throw as many pitches as possible,” said Carlos Asuaje, Greenville’s designated hitter, who drew one of those walks and also recorded two hits and three runs-batted-in. “I like to stay patient at the plate, especially when a guy’s struggling.”

Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, Greenville (9-6) scored twice to take the lead in the bottom of the opening inning.

Jantzen Witte and Mager hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Asuaje then doubled off the Green Monster in left field to score both of them.

Those hits extended hitting streaks for Witte (eight games), Mager (10) and Asuaje (nine).

Speier claims Coyle was hit by a pitch and will be evaluated today.
