I mean, even Verdugo thought it was foul. That's not really on DOB.
I meant more that he treated it as a clearly, no question foul ball the entire time when it was obviously close.

Now I'm wondering if both of them were fooled by Kepler making no attempt to get to the ball. Maybe he deked them out.

So what happens if the ball hits the top of the wall fair but bounds out to the foul side of the pole?
Pretty sure it’s a home run cause of where the line is painted on the wall. The line isn’t directly under the pole cause Fenway

Yeah I was so confused because there was no emotion in the call and I’m watching the balls trajectory and I’m thinking it’s got a chance. No idea what dugie and or Obie was looking at. Obie was probably looking at the rf and dugie

Twins really fucked up. Could have kept Hernandez at 2b on the CI play, but 1bman gave up on play. Kepler did same.

Yeah I don’t really understand the rule. Why was Kike awarded 3B? It’s not a dead ball?

High LOB totals aside, this was a really nice game for the Sox. Chris Sale was Chris Sale again, Dugie continues to rake, another shutdown performance from Jansen and of course the team once again didn't quit and walked it off.

While I respect the doom and gloomers among you, I think this team is still a lot of fun to root for and I see some good signs for hope. Despite missing key players the Sox are 6-6 against teams with winning record. And there's a lot of room for growth from players that are underperforming. Sure, maybe this team goes nowhere but is it so crazy to think they could make a legit run?

It isn't if the ball's in play. If in play, the "batter" (the manager) can choose the outcome of the play (1st and 3rd here) OR (say if McG or Hernandez is thrown out), he can take 1st base and the runner goes back to 2nd.
So, when the twins 1Bman came off the bag, he gave the Sox both.

I suppose it's a lot clearer if the batter hits a gapper. Take the play, hell with the CI.

The foul line, the foul pole, and the line painted on the wall all lie in the same plane.
Right, but the distance between the line and the pole on an angle creates the possibility for the play I mentioned, which is not really possible in other parks.

Gotcha thanks

You can choose to accept the interference penalty or refuse it and take the result of the play. (Like an nfl penalty)
Since the Twins gave up on the play didn’t record an out, we chose to accept the single and runner moving to third.

Did Reesey get credit for a basehit, or did some poor Twin get saddled with an error? Interesting play.

Can I add that Jarren Duran looks really good so far this season? If his fly ball into the triangle in the second inning is a couple feet shallower or deeper, it bounces around out there and he likely has a home run — at least a standup triple — and either way we likely win in regulation.

Of course, with him, we have to wait and see what happens when the league adjusts to his new swing. Can he counter-adjust?

So it seems like the best strategy is whenever there is catchers interference the runners should just keep running and force the defense to make a play? Worse case scenario everyone just moves up one base?

And a great AB in the 10th after failing to get the bunt down against a lefty that wins the game more times than not, but Casas had to make sure it wasn't caught. If he can be at least servicable vs lefties he's a major leaguer.

On vaca and didn’t get to watch - love seeing that we pulled it out and sale threw well

question: how did yoshida look? See he went 0-5 and is well below the Mendoza line…were his abs competitive?
Good ABs, bad contact for the most part. But the fly to CF and especially the lineout to LF give me hope. I feel like he's one adjustment away from going on a tear.

So it's like offsides in football. There is a delayed penalty. If the offense throws a TD they obviously decline the penalty. In this case if the batter hits a double or homer the Red Sox decline the catcher's interference. If Kike gets thrown out at 3rd, then the Red Sox take the catchers interference penalty.

Yes, except you can’t get too greedy. If you have taken one extra base safely, it is still risky to try to take a second extra base. Like if you make it safely to third but then try for home thinking what the fuck, and get thrown out, you go back to second not third.

I am catching up now, watching the 10th inning on MLBTV.

So I thought the ghost runner was no more.

Anyhow great win and great start from Sale.

That was one of the craziest games I've ever seen. From catcher's interference to a pitcher scoring a run in extra innings to the Kike striking out being a big help, to the delayed walkoff, it was nutty.

Who knows what will happen next, but it's really encouraging to see that Sale still has the capability to dominantly blow away hitters for 6 innings. After the last few years, it's great to see the proof that he can still do it. Whether he can do it consistently remains to be seen and we won't know about that for a while, but at least we know he still has it in him and that's great news.
He actually laughed in the postgame interview-- I don't think I've ever seen him laugh before.

Our catching situation is looking pretty good for now, with McGuire hitting .400 and Mr. Wong gunning down runners left and right. Wong was calling the pitches for Sale tonight and just based on results alone, I want him back there again for Sale every start until further notice.

I happened to be down the line (you can see me and my 2 kids celebrating while Kepler was chasing the ball). It very clearly hit the wall on the fair side in real time from where I was, but it was close enough and such a weird angle that I don't know how anyone near the pole would be able to tell right away.

Understood. The anomaly results from the intersection of the "foul plane" with Fenway's weird boundary geometry.

I think so. Good that young players can grow and overcome obstacles maturity wise as well as athletically. Last year he became kind of a symptom of whats wrong with the Sox, would be nice if opposite happened this year.

edit: also thanks to @scottyno for finding the two fs clip! I almost always watch the game late and recording and some of the end didn’t get captured
