STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 3 ½ innings then saw Rochester score six unanswered runs, but the PawSox held on for a 7-6 win over the Red Wings Wednesday afternoon in a game played with wind chills in the high 20s at Frontier Field.

After collecting 15 hits in game one of the series Monday, the PawSox (8-5) pounded out a season-high 17 knocks in the wild contest that featured 29 total hits and 39 baserunners. Pawtucket has won three straight games for the first time this season and has secured at least a .500 road trip.

Relievers Tommy Layne (2-1) and Drake Britton were able to squelch the Red Wings comeback attempt by combining for four shutout innings at game's end. Britton escaped a first and third, one-out jam in the eighth when right fielder Bryce Brentz threw out the potential tying run at home plate on Eduardo Nunez's fly out.

Britton then secured his second save of the season when he struck out the side in the ninth, pitching around two walks in the process. He fanned Dan Rohlfing with runners on first and second base to end the contest.

Pawtucket scored three times in the third and then four in the fourth against Rochester starter Scott Diamond (0-2) to take a huge early lead. The first three batters recorded hits in the third, including an RBI double by Alex Hassan that opened the scoring.

After Brandon Snyder's sacrifice fly, Bryce Brentz lined a two-out RBI single to plate the third PawSox run. Diamond then allowed hits the first four batters he faced in the fourth, including an RBI single by Brock Holt and another run-scoring double by Hassan that made the score 5-0.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Dan Butler collected a two-run single that plated Holt and Hassan with Pawtucket's final runs of the contest and made the score 7-0. The PawSox were held scoreless over the final five innings despite collecting six more hits.

Brandon Workman, recently optioned from Boston, started for the first time in 2014 and allowed three runs in 3.1 innings of work, all of them scoring in the fourth with reliever Chris Resop on the hill. Workman permitted three hits and one walk while striking out two.
SALEM

Game Story

Erik Gonzalez led Carolina with five hits in two Mudcat victories, while the Salem Sox mustered five total hits as a team in a pair of setbacks. In the opener, Ryan Merritt and Elvis Araujo combined for a two-hit shutout in Carolina's 4-0 triumph. The nightcap was even closer, with an unearned run becoming the difference in the 2-1 Mudcats win. Salem has now dropped six straight and seven of its last eight after starting the season 5-0.

In game one, Jeremy Lucas commenced the scoring by driving in Gonzalez with a two-out single in the first. From there, Carolina added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth, all of which were unnecessary since the Sox could not get the bats to click. Carson Blair and Kevin Heller each delivered a double, but no other Salem hitters chipped in with a knock in the opener.

In game two, Heller triggered Salem's only offense with a leadoff triple in the top of the third. Two batters later, Dreily Guerrero's sacrifice fly made it 1-0. But Carolina countered quickly, with Todd Hankins belted a leadoff triple and scoring two batter's later on Gonzalez' double to tie it up.

In the last of the fourth, Ollie Linton drew a one-out walk. With James Roberts batting, Linton took off for second, stealing the bag and beginning a chaotic sequence. The throw to second skidded off the runner into shallow left field. Linton took off for third, and shortstop Ryan Dent tracked down the ball and fired to third. That throw skipped under the third-baseman's glove and into foul territory, bouncing into the Mudcats dugout. With the ball out of play, Linton touched home plate as a result of two throwing errors, and Carolina led 2-1.

Josh Martin earned the win in game two, dealing two and two-thirds hitless innings out of the pen. Louis Head struck out the side in a dominant seventh, earning his fourth save of the year. Salem's Simon Mercedes suffered the loss despite pitching solidly, allowing just two runs (one earned) over four and a third. In relief, Elis Jimenez tossed an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball in his Carolina League debut.
DRIVE

Game Story

Just when Greenville fought back to tie the game, Charleston pushed across one more run to complete the sweep of the three-game series at Fluor Field.

After the Drive had rallied from five- and four-run deficits to tie the game 7-7 in the eighth, the RiverDogs used a walk and two singles to generate the game winner in the ninth.

Despite the loss, Drive manager Darren Fenster said his team kept playing hard.

“You’re down 5-0 against a team that’s been hitting the ball well, very easily could have said ‘Here we go again,’” he said. “I can’t ask for any more than the way that we’ve battled.

“We’re playing all nine innings regardless of the score of the game.”

Greenville entered the series with their Palmetto state rivals on a five-game winning streak. They’ll take to the road having lost three in a row.

“The last few days have been tough,” Fenster said. “It’s absolutely not for a lack of battling. It’s not for a lack of anything other than the nature of baseball.”

Charleston (6-7) struck for a pair of runs in the first. The RiverDogs extended that lead to 5-0 in the fourth.

Greenville (7-6) started chipping into that lead in the fourth. Kevin Mager led off with a solo homer over the Green Monster in left field. His fourth home run of the season made it 5-1.
