I thought the Tek hate was ridiculous; but ... Pedroia-hate???

That's just epic-level stupidity

To think that we’ve gone from the team that finished October to one where after less than 20 games getting blown out by the Orioles is not a surprise....

I agree that Cora’s ST plan for the starters sucked. There’s a reason why pitchers have gotten more work over decades in the spring and a wholesale change in approach rarely is a good idea.

But I put a good chunk of the blame on DD. By sticking to the pen he had and not addressing the relative weakness before the playoffs, he forced Cora to rely heavily on the starters out of the pen. Thankfully, they met the challenge and we all got to enjoy the results. But I think that heavy usage was part of why Cora tried what he tried this exhibition season.

Of course, none of that explains how drag ass the offense has been or the fact that we haven’t seen MVP or even close to MVP level Mookie since September of 2018.

Granted we had a patch work lineup today, but this still doesn't explain this terrible pitching against bad teams. Brutal is the kindest way to put it. Have we nothing better than Hembree?

Let's put our GM hats on for a moment and think on what it will take to get this team out of the doldrums.

Who should be made available in a trade? Who is off limits? Does anyone have options that can be sent down to give someone else a shot who might bring a fresh start with him? Should they go back to the free agent market and talk to Keuchel and/or Kimbrel? Should Cora juggle the lineup again?

What can they do other than pitch better and play better? Is that even an option at this point or is it too in their heads at this point? Does failure beget failure ad infinitum?

Up and down the roster, the players who led the team last year have considerably underperformed so far this year. The players need to play better and it's going to be on the existing team to do that because wholesale changes aren't coming.

Just play better, everyone. Until then, they'll keep losing.

Is there any chance Mookie's struggles are related to his home life? I know he recently had a child and, from all I've heard, that takes a toll on the parents in the first few months with the inconsistent sleep schedules, illnesses, etc. Is he maybe spending a lot of time being a dad and losing time to rest up and be mentally focused? I can't fault him for that, if he is, mind you, but it did come to mind today.

I have mentioned more than once that OB said something along the lines of the baby keeping Markus up at night. And this was when they were on the left coast, so either he had the family with him or OB had been referring to ST. If that's a factor, he should sleep separately for a while. But those who point out that he had a generally poor offensive off-season have reminded me of that and how worried we were at the time. But those concerns are always laughed off as small sample sizes. When does the size become significant?

On paper, it's a fine idea. In practice, it may be a nonstarter for a variety of reasons, up to and including Mookie not wanting to sleep away from his child or his child's mother not wanting to be the only one to have to take care of him at night so the father can get a good night's sleep and go play a child's game at a high level. And I'm not being dickish when I say that: I'm sure Mookie's status in baseball is crystal clear to all involved, but that doesn't remove the human element from it and I'm sure even the most prolific married male athlete would admit that he'd be unwise to not heed the wishes of his significant other, especially as relates to childcare. It's not like he's not going to get a big money deal anyway, so it's possible that there is just a lack of care for his needs as a ballplayer over the needs of the family dynamic and the child. In the face of that, I don't see any other option than for Mookie to stay the course and hope that there's a little more consistency in his sleep schedule by mid-season so he can salvage the year and still get a big contract (though he is costing himself money with every game right now).

Anybody have dibs on the next run of gamethreads? Because if not I’ll handle it and lead us to the promised land. After midnight, correct?

One hundred years ago, the Red Sox pitching staff gave up 16 home runs for the whole season. SSS, and all that, but they are on pace to give up 270 this season.

If Pedro acting as a Consigliere worked with E-Rod, maybe its time for Big Papi to have a good talk with all hitters, of course reminding them they could go and sleep with the fishes.
