I think you heard me, punchy.
It's Patriot's Day! For those of you not in greater Boston, it commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord, which were fought in 1775.

It's also Marathon Monday. Lotsa people taking a slightly long jog.

Leonardo da Vinci was born on this day. Emma Watson. Jeromy Burnitz, who struck out a lot (as did I, in other ventures).

And it's our favorite neck tattoo, Hector Velazquez, pitching against Dan Straily, who hasn't had much luck pitching with a bird on his uni.

It's supposed to rain. All in all a typical Monday.

The XIX in the tattoo is his son's birthday.

Win this and we win the series. That would be cool.

That talentless turd, Adam Levine, made me quite happy in my decision to never get a tatoo ages ago.... Hector is again confirming what a brilliant call that was! Awesome!!!
I did predict that Devers would have a struggle of a first half and then turn some corner and forever forward be the awesome slugger we know he's going to be... but I was really expecting JBJ and Betts to be awesome out of the box. Stop being shitty out of the box guys! Knock it off!!!

Started chatting to the woman next to me at the bar at the Baseball Tavern, talking about the tradition of coming to the game on Patriot’s Day. Turns out she was friends with Krystle Campbell, one of the bombing victims. It sucks that this awesome day is also associated with such a shitty event.

Any idea if the game is starting on time? I’m thinking of heading in.

Vazquez at 2b?? I guess that's one way to get rid of him and move Leon back to be the Sale Whisperer.

Is this game gonna happen weather wise?

This will not be a day where the Sox hurlers should try to pitch to contact.

Would have expected Pearce at 2B and Swihart in LF. Look forward to hearing Cora's rationale.

I glanced at that lineup and it all made sense in light of JBJ and Benintendi, and then I saw the reactions here in this thread and I had to look at the lineup again. And yep, there's Vazquez playing second base. Holy crap.

The Pedroia/wet field thing must be for real because otherwise the solution is pretty simple:

Pedroia at 2b
Vazquez at C
Pearce at DH
Swihart in LF

But instead, they've got:

Pedroia at DH
Vazquez at 2b
Pearce in LF
Swihart at C

Crazy.

Looking at BBref CV has numerous games played at 2b and SS in rookie A and low A and high A between 2013-2015. I did not know this.

edit- and the reason I did not know this is that it is a different CV. Ignore this. Thanks @findguapo

Vazquez has played third base in the majors four times - June 19, 2017, July 20, 2017, and September 26, 2018 (both games of DH) - each time for the final inning of the game. No fielding chances in any of the games.

He was a defensive replacement at second base in one game (4.2 innings) with Greenville (A) in 2010.

Third is quite different, double plays could be very risky.

Cora, on making out the lineup:
"I had plenty of fun. These are the days that you really enjoy being a manager. It's a challenge ... Where we at roster wise, and Christian has been taking groundballs at second and at short and at third. He's caught three in a row or four in a row, or whatever it is. We're comfortable with him as far as making the routine play. He can turn the double play. He played first base in the World Series. ... He wants to do it, he likes to do it, and we're going with him. ... I mean we have a program [with Pedroia], we have to be disciplined. We were pushing him to play second but it doesn't make sense. Something happens today with him and then it's on us. So the only thing we can do is DH him and keep him off his feet as much as possible and push him so far. ... It's tough conditions. ... Don't be surprised if we're moving people around the whole game like we did in the World Series from spot to spot. Should be a fun one. Looking forward to it, honestly."

It is looking to me that the worst of the weather is forecast after 2 pm. Here's hoping nobody gets hurt from the wet. But why is it wet? No tarp?
Eastern Mass. had a pretty substantial thundershower early this morning. The tarp essentially covers the infield only.

And now Sox can’t hit against a 19 plus ERA pitcher, whose opponents were hitting .500

Thats his ERA now, but he has been merely kind of below-average instead of sub-major league quality several seasons in his career.
