pawtucket
Tim Tebow is playing in Pawtucket this weekend. The former college football star is 31 now and trying to make it as a baseball player in the Mets’ farm system.
Tebow went 0-for-3 on Thursday night, dropping his early-season batting average to .120. He struck out on a 3-2 offspeed pitch by Jennry Mejia to end the game. Tebow swung and missed six times, mostly on heat under his hands. It looks like you can get him out in a variety of ways.
The weird thing is, everyone loves Tebow. Even the hecklers in our section down the left field line were rooting for Tebow to hit a homer in his last at-bat. There is an aura of good that flows from Tebow.
People have fun with his pure image, too. When Tebow reached base on a walk, and then broke up a double play with a clean slide into second, one heckler yelled out, “Tebow died for your sins!”
Crowd was listed at 6,240. Looked more like 5,000 people in the stands. That’s why I am quoting hecklers. Hecklers stand out in small crowds.
This team will draw fans as long as it contends. There are some interesting players to watch. Bryce Brentz is a AAAA player, an all-or-nothing swinger. His second-inning homer was a line drive to center that hit off the tarp above the fence. The fence is 410 and this ball would have gone another 30 feet. It left the park in about one second.
First baseman Josh Ockimey homered right before Brentz, another line drive that got out in a hurry. Ockimey is a big (6-1, 215) left handed hitter, along the lines of Sam Horn, except with a glove. Made a diving grab of a scorched line drive midway through the game. Lifetime .247 hitter in five minor league seasons.
Michael Chavis hits third and is learning how to play second base. He is 5-10 and weighs around 210. Has shown power in the past, most notably 31 homers in 2017 in the Sally League and Portland. Just 9 last year in 171 ABs, a season shortened by an 80-game PEDS suspension. Chavis went 3-for-4 on opening night in Syracuse, with a homer, is hitless in 15 trips since then. Five walks in 24 PAs. The kid is a late bloomer, having spent five seasons in the minors. He has mostly played third base in the minors but was drafted as a shortstop.
Sandy Leon did the catching. He got his World Series ring in the bullpen right before the game started. Red Sox officials, including Larry Lucchino, walked out there to deliver Sandy’s ring in person. The veteran deserves as much.
Lucchino told Kevin McNamara of the Projo that he thinks PawSox fans understand the team wanted to stay but the state legislature would not sign off on the bill. Pretty honest take, IMO. I don’t blame the owners, that’s for sure.
If the PawSox were located in Cranston, hometown of the Speaker of the House, they would not be heading to Worcester in two years. Rhode Island is a small state whose politicians think small. This is not breaking news.
