Ugh, Tinordi is still in. And they are sticking Vaakanainen with him. That's no place for a kid who you are trying to develop and hope has a future with the organization. You're supposed to try to put them in a position to succeed. Just baffling decision making. I guess they think maybe Tinordi will punch Matt Martin or something? John Moore isn't a savior by any stretch but he's far more useful than Tinordi and can actually keep up with the play and help transition the puck. Poor Vaakanainen is going to have to do all the work getting puck out of the zone.

Also, Butch is pretty fired up at DeBrusk. I can't remember him ever publicly criticizing a player this harshly:

Also, I don't really love Studnicka on the wing. I think he's played much better at center. Taking DeBrusk out leaves them thin on wingers but I think I would've moved Coyle up to RW and let Studnicka center Freddy and Smith.

Maybe I'm just grumpy today though.

I came to post "I think Cassidy has had enough of DeBrusk" before i saw this. I dont know what the deeper numbers say, but my eyes tell me that Frederic and Studnicka have been noticeably improving week-by-week. And while I dont know how high Bjork's ceiling is, he, too, has been playing harder in the last couple of weeks. Worse than being bad, DeBrusk has been non-noticeable, other than the fact that he is being outplayed by 3 guys who have been on various bubbles the last few weeks.

I expect that whichever forwards are on the ice with Tinordi-vaak are going to spend a lot of time coming bck to help. Tinordi is slow and useless; Vaak is quick and potentially useful, but he really needs to get stronger (or learn how to leverage his size better).

Is Sweeney forcing Cassidy to use Tinordi? Seems like we get one of these "reclamation projects" every year with this team, giving minutes that'd better be used getting reps in for actual reserve players like Moore or Kampfer, or assessing prospects. (Granted, with Zboril and Vaak already up the cupboard is pretty bare there.) Either way, Tinordi looks like an ECHL defenseman out there and it's baffling why a team with competitive aspirations is continuing to play him.

As far as Jake DeBrusk goes, isn't this who he's always been? He's a non-factor for dozens of games, gets put on blast, then goes on a scoring tear that gets everyone's hopes up then goes cold again. I'd love to think that he's close to "figuring out" whatever he needs to be a consistent player, but it's been years now.

Couldn’t it just as simple as Cassidy & Sweeney think they’re a little too soft around the net after Miller got hurt? Moore is better than Tinordi, but not in the area that they feel that they need. Personally, I think they both suck, and I want them off the roster as soon as possible.

This. And it is going to be interesting to see what Sweeney does at the deadline.

Has anyone seen a confirmation on how Tuukka got hurt? I had thought at the time he may have been hit by Wood on a rush (again) in the NJ game, but play continued and they didn't really comment on it at all. He looked injured coming off the ice at the end of the game.

I really don’t think DeBrusk has been right since that Kadri hit.
That is a possibility.

His first three years his points per game were 0.61, 0.62, 0.54. This year he’s at 0.29. He’s only had 35 SOG in 17 games and his shooting percentage is 2.9.

Something’s wrong with him, physically or in his attitude. He’s always got down in himself when he isn’t scoring. Seems to lose his confidence easily.

Where are you getting that he’s hurt? I haven’t seen anything about it, he could just be getting the night off completely. They did this at least one other time this year.

Though in the last game thread I noted he was lucky he didn’t get hurt when he got(unintentionally) clipped

Yeah. Marchand getting extra is understandable there. Like to see him sticking up for his teammate.

First bit of sustained pressure in a while for the Bs... I feel like they are skating/passing in molasses. No zip or continuity to much at all.

I'm not making an effort statement... just an observation. I don't know if it's a matchup thing or what...

lucky to get a point, I tuned in with 5 minutes left and the Islanders were in the zone for 90 seconds in a row.

They can hold anyone to 1 or 2 goals.

Problem is they can't score 2 or 3 against good defensive teams.
I'm afraid this is true. Scoring chances are systematically minimized on both ends. It's not play to win hockey. Our goaltending should beat theirs. If it doesn't, bummer.

Isles are a good team and continue their success against us. 3 on 3 is terrific and should be for 10 minutes. The shootout is a joke. Lucky to come out of LI with a point tonight.

3 DMen out, 5v5 Offense in a legit swoon, glad we took a road point from a good team. After Saturday’s tilt v Rangers, we’ll have had 17 dates in NY/NJ and like 9 actual games at TDGarden. That’s fucked up.

At some point they have to address why nobody outside of Pastrnak can score against any team that can play a lick of defense right? Is it system? Or they just have a 1st line, then a bunch of bottom 6 forwards who are good defensively and give an effort, but can’t consistently bury scoring chances? It’s probably a little of both honestly.
