i have Burnley/Everton on in the background while I play with our toddler. I missed the goal, though I was in the room. Not a lot to hold my attention to it...

Pickford just played a nice thought of a through ball into a goal by staying on his line. Nice to see him rounding into England form in time for the World Cup.

He did have a worldy in the first half, to be fair.

Newcastle didn't do a lot wrong in that first half. Clear game plan, well executed for the most part. But Liverpool after playing fairly conservatively put the foot on the gas towards the end of the half. I wouldn't be shocked if Newcastle score in the second half, but I fully expect Liverpool to add to their tally.

Rafa sets his team out well, you can see the gameplan. I wonder if he'll get some decent cash to spend if and when he keeps Newcastle up.

In other news, I watched the West Brom match. They're doomed.

Rafa has actually never lost at Anfield as an opposing manager, whether leading Valencia, Chelsea, or Newcastle. His teams always arrive with a plan.

Sweet move with Firmino playing in Mane and it's 2-0.

It's funny because the best move in the match followed about 5 consecutive sloppy passes that almost led to a Newcastle breakaway.

The passing that lead to Mane's goal was superb, especially the short cut back against the grain by Firmino. And the finish wasn't half bad either :)

Van Dijk's cushioned defensive headers to a teammate are worth pretty much half his transfer fee
No one's questioned the fee for a few weeks now, and rightly so. He'll be one of the first names on the team sheet for the next few years, he makes other players around him better, and he's still got room for improvement. Reminds me of when Rio went to Man U from Leeds.

There's been a fair few signings in the 30-50+ Million range that aren't quite working out this year around the EPL. Man U haven't got the best out of Pogba and Arsenal haven't seen the best of...anyone?

Salah could have a couple of penalties in the last 5 minutes.

EDIT: Well, the second one was a step out of the box, but was a clear foul and a red as the last man, but...whatever.

A lot of ugly with a couple beautiful moments, I'll take the 3 points.

So the tackle on Wilshere which was perfectly fine gets a yellow, but Kolasinac gets nothing for a shoulder charge against a defenseless player.

Not the best day for the referee.

Sadly, while I continue to root for the club I find myself not really even minding the bad results at this point, as long as they hasten/ensure Wenger's departure. I wish it didn't have to end this way but he brought it on himself and has only himself to blame.

I’ve railed against players quitting on or sabotaging their manager on many occasions (LCFC in particular). In this case, I don’t see how you can blame them. As a fan of the game, this has been so painful to watch unfold in slow motion over the past few years.

Christ that was a tense last twenty minutes or so. Brighton sat back, but they held on, and gave everything to get that result. Arsenal showed fight, but to be fair they never had too many chances.

Ref had a right mare.

Biggest game of weekend on now. Atletico at Barca [emoji3]

Messi with a free kick that curved and dipped about 12 feet. 1-0

This is how I feel re: Everton. Obviously Allardyce has only been there for a couple of months, so it's not the end of an era with all that entails, but the sentiment is the same - if Everton were miraculously to reel off four or five wins in a row it would make it harder for the club to fire him at the end of the season. As long as Everton stay up I'm fine and I'd be OK with them limping to the finish if it would hasten Sam getting shot into the sun.

I don't blame you. Everton is good enough and talented enough that relegation shouldn't be a serious threat, so they might as well go with riskier, high-upside managers that might make the whole greater than the sum of the parts and break into the top six. Big Fat Sam might be OK as a mid-season caretaker but he makes no sense as a guy to entrust with actually taking the team somewhere.

Fucking gut punch. I found a bar that had the replay on, and was so excited when I saw it was 1-0. I figured 3 points against Man U and we're looking good for safety with what's up on the schedule. Then I was bargaining for 1 point. Then acceptance that there was no way they were holding on, especially with their depleted roster as Mourinho brought on sub after sub that would have been in Palace's first team.
