Thank goodness that I didn’t find a way to watch Atlético get its ass kicked 4-0 at Benfica. Clearly, the team is much worse without Le Normand, who missed the match with a head injury. But his absence cannot explain such a thumping. There’s too much talent for such a letdown.

Dortmund take the lead at the Bernabéu in a rematch of last season’s final.

edit: make it two!

Kane ties it up. Both teams are pressing extremely high. This game could have plenty of goals.

Liverpool were getting gouged in the counter the first 15 minutes, Red Hull had 3 shots on goal. But Kelleher handled it all. And then they locked in - Nunez tapped one in and Gakpo had one saved brilliantly. And now there was a very close PK shout on Nunez.

Barca takes a 3-1 lead into the half. It’s been like watching a game in fast forward. Both teams are going for it.

Some real sloppy defensive play but Kelleher bailing them out so far

On cue, braindead shot attempt by Robertson with 30 seconds of added time to run out

Liverpool deserved to win by a goal, but 4-3 would be a more accurate depiction of the defending rather than 1-0.

Don’t look now, but Milan (starting two Yanks) lead Real Madrid with 20 minutes left to go

The new format has really been great. Maybe with time it will become rote, but this has been a welcome addition of chaos.
Maybe. In the old format, you would think a Real Madrid team sitting on six points out of four games might be in trouble (depending on other results, of course). Now it just feels like they have time to pull it together.

Whatever the case, two of the favorites getting beaten by multiple goals on the same day is great to see and certainly backs you up.

Celtic beat RB Leipzig 3-1. RB Leipzig took the lead, but Celtic came back well and deserved the three points. Celtic are looking good for a play off spot.

From a USMNT perspective:
Celtic and AC Milan started 2 USMNT players and won. PSV played 2 Yanks and won, with Malik Tillman getting MOTM honors. Cole Campbell came off the bench today, becoming the 11th American to play in this season’s Champions League.

Juve did not start either USMNTer and did not win.

I know Inited have spent a fuck ton on big 9s the past couple years, but have to think Amorim is going to try to sneak Gyökeres in his luggage this week.

No joy for Villa. Club Brugge get all three points with the only goal of the match. Tyrone Mings gives away a penalty in bizarre fashion.

Trying to keep an eye on the two headliners this afternoon. Inter lead Arsenal 1-0 early in the second half. It seems to be a decently even match so far. PSG are playing well against Atleti but the game somehow remains tied at 1-1. Javi Galan will be seeing Ousmane Dembele in his nightmares for months.

Correa does what he does and steals it at the end for Atleti in Paris. PSG were dominant, but so it goes.

So halfway thru the group phase and here's a look at the table. Top 8 move on directly to the R16, 9-24 play a home and home for the other 8 R16 spots, and 25-36 are eliminated. There is no more drop down to UEL and UcoL. The way I look at it, the most interest is in the top 8 since that means R16 qualification and saves squads 2 extra UEL matches. And obviously the bottom 12 is huge since they are eliminated.

Sporting, Monaco, and Brest (!) all currently sit in the top 8.
PSG and RB Leipzig currently are in the relegation elimination zone.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'd be curious to know which clubs have played the most and fewest pot 1/pot 2 games. In other words, if PSG has already played their 4 toughest games on paper, then we can reasonably expect them to take more points over their next 4 UCL games. OTOH, if Arsenal have played all of their pot 3 and pot 4 games and still only have 7 points, they may be in more trouble than it appears from the table.

But much like the old group format, I think it's a bit of a mess and less interesting until the final 2 group fixtures or so. I'll pay more attention to the table after MW 6, when we'll have a clear idea of how many points are needed to get into a top 8 spot and to avoid elimination. I doubt clubs care that much whether they finish 12th or 20th, although it will have a significant bearing on who their opponents will be for the R16 playoff and the R16.

Now over to the UEL thread!

I doubt anyone will feel bad for PSG, but they have one hell of a schedule:
Girona (H)- they won and Girona is a weaker team compared to the other La Liga entries, but they were better and healthier early this season when they played PSG
Arsenal (A)- that’s a hard game, Arsenal won 2-0
PSV (H)- most of us follow the USMNT and know this PSV team is really good. This ended 1-1.
Atletico Madrid (H)- PSG played better but got Correa’d

That’s a tough stretch, and now they go:
Bayern (A)
RB Salzburg (A)
Manchester City (H)
Stuttgart (A)

This feels like a ridiculous schedule for a top club like PSG. Again, not shedding any tears for them, but that is rough.

Pot 1
Real Madrid (ESP)
Manchester City (ENG)
Bayern München (GER)
Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)

Liverpool (ENG)
Inter (ITA)
Dortmund (GER)
Leipzig (GER)
Barcelona (ESP)

Pot 2
Leverkusen (GER)
Atlético de Madrid (ESP)
Atalanta (ITA)
Juventus (ITA)
Benfica (POR)
Arsenal (ENG)
Club Brugge (BEL)
Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
AC Milan (ITA)

Pot 3
Feyenoord (NED)
Sporting CP (POR)
PSV Eindhoven (NED)
GNK Dinamo (CRO)
Salzburg (AUT)
Lille (FRA)
Crvena Zvezda (SRB)
Young Boys (SUI)
Celtic (SCO)

Pot 4
Slovan Bratislava (SVK)
Monaco (FRA)
Sparta Praha (CZE)
Aston Villa (ENG)
Bologna (ITA)
Girona (ESP)
Stuttgart (GER)

Sturm Graz (AUT)
Brest (FRA)

They got hit hard in pots 2 and 3. Pot 1 is pretty strong top to bottom, despite RBL's weak performance in UCL so far (they are second in Bundesliga). Madrid is the next lowest pot 1 team in the table! Pot 2 is also pretty consistent in quality, outside of Juve, Milan, and Shakhtar. Girona is a shell of last year's team and Stuttgart are sitting 8th in the Bundesliga at the moment. They're unlucky that they didn't get get Young Boys, Belgrade, or Bratislava, but outside of those this just seems like a schedule teams are facing in this year's tournament.

Bump for the return of Champions League soccer today.

On the day that Paramount released the trailer for the new Christian Pulisic documentary, he opened the scoring for Milan.

Edited to add that the main attractions this week must be PSG-Bayern today and Liverpool-Real Madrid tomorrow, though admittedly a hobbled Madrid team.

It’s so crazy to see Man City struggle like this. Up 3-0 in the 75th minute and ended up getting tied by Feyernord. Let’s hope their struggles continue at least one more match.

Must be an acquired taste because I absolutely cannot stand the CBS Champions League studio team.

if you’re one of the people wondering WTF HAPPENED TO HIS HEAD AND FACE, he explained later that they were scratches from his own fingernails - evidently made during various head-in-hands moments, of which he has had many lately.

Pep ain’t Peppin’ at the moment.

Part of this is country protection, right? All of pot 1 is EN/ES/DE/IT except PSG. And the result of this is two each of English, German and Spanish opposition. Then they have the bad luck to draw one of the two best teams in 3. It's a pretty brutal slate, but I wonder if the logic of the draw means that either PSG or one of the Italians will have this kind of schedule every year going forward.

Can't imagine being so souless that you can't enjoy the CBS team.

It's pretty remarkable just HOW Man City collapsed yesterday. They didn't just blow the game, they blew the game with just calamitous mistakes. The defending was awful and Ederson made several terrible mistakes. The final goal--playing an undisciplined high-line when you just need to kill the games for a few minutes, was just completely unacceptable. If Pep was ANYONE else, he would be on the chopping block.

Scoreless so far at Anfield.

Darwin and some RM dude pushing and shoving in the box, draw offsetting yellows.

First time Darwin's hit the target in awhile.

Liverpool have had the better chances and should have scored at least once.

RM cleared a ball off the goal line about the ten-minute mark. Courtois made an incredible reflex save on a shot from within the 6 yard box just now (24').
