I’m beyond excited- this is usually my favorite international championship (AFCON is awesome but it’s every two years and COPA America is always great football but the whole ‘invite teams from other regions’ throws it off a bit for me). You have a bunch of massive countries but there are often upsets and the winner is not always who is expected (Denmark, Greece, and Portugal spring to mind).

Given my Flemish last name, I’ve always been a huge Belgium fan (my favorite international team) and thanks to some heritage (and a trip to the Banshee with Mart and Kev a great many years ago) I will also support Scotland pretty thoroughly. I have a last day of school work function on Friday afternoon that I need to attend to respect some retiring colleagues, but I will be the guy in the corner in my 1967 World Champions Dennis Law kit, watching on my phone.

Can’t wait.

Are they still the favorite after a woeful performance against Iceland in a warmup? I know being the host is an advantage, but their defense seems pretty iffy due to some injuries.

The dutch seem a bit underrated. Midfield of the Jong, Reijnders, Veerman/Koopmeijners can run with everyone. Defense is pretty solid, attack needs a standout, Frimpong seems like the guy right now.

Donyell Malen potted 13 (no PKs) for Dortmund this season, he can do a fine job working off the target man Weghorst and the wide playmaker Gakpo.

But this could be Xavi Simons’ time to shine. He’s a tiny demon on the pitch. The Koeman can find ways to get him in a pocket of space, Simons can cook something special.

Germany is the host, not England. England’s advantage is their draw I think.

That’s a great call. All things being equal, I’d pick them over Spain to win it all who are +800. Things aren’t equal though, as Spain has a really tough group. At the very least, the Dutch will be a ton of fun to watch.

I’d love to hear the arguments for why France isn’t the favorite*

*I understand the group differences, but you don’t need to win your group to win the tournament

England is the favorite odds-wise because their irrational fans are all degenerate gamblers.

England is LOADED in attack and can play a couple of defensively solid CM...their back line and GK are big questions for me. I think their path is much harder than the last two competitions...group stage should be simple but they won't be gifted knock out games as easy as they had the last two times.

Granted I'm a giant hater so maybe I'm just wish casting, but I'll be surprised if England makes the final, let alone wins.

I agree. England look terrible at the back and then there’s the Southgate factor.

I think Germany wins. Home team, best manager, good all around squad with an experienced midfield, solid backline, and some dynamic young attackers in Wirtz and Musiala.

The country of van Basten, Bergkamp, van Persie putting in Wout Weghorst as striker. How far have we sunk. The guy is beyond terrible. He scored 7 goals all season for his club. Koeman should have been on the phone with the Jong from PSV to coax him out of retirement just for this tournament.

The glut of strikers is always a problem for the dutch. Koeman can go Big and small against some opponents or go speed with simons, depay and bergwijn/frimpong. Simons is a special talent, he has not shown it in the dutch squad. If he doenst deliver against Iceland i reckon he is on the bench.

There’s a touch of Dutch arrogance in expecting to have that steady supply of best-in-world strikers. The Netherlands has what, 17.5m people? Thats less than a quarter of Germany or France. It’s less than NY state. The steady flow of world class player over 50+ years from a population that size is incredible, not to mention being regular challengers for the biggest trophies. I’m sure another great striker is in the pipeline.

Simons looks to have grown a bit taller, which is great. But he’s still so goddamn slight that he gets eaten up too easily. I think he struggles wearing the Oranje because Simons needs a freer role to find pockets of space to operate, and that’s just tough to coordinate in the limited time that national teams play together versus clubs. This might be where Weghorst is most valuable - pinning the CBs back and opening a pocket where Simons can operate. And Malen can cut into.

you would be right if he did that, but he doesn’t. He is always pulling away from the penalty area when the Dutch have the ball, and because his skill is limited the CB just lets a midfield player pick him up.

I reckon Brobby is much better in keeping the ball and giving the through pass.

I know he had some injury issues but Koeman's unwillingness to bring Zirkzee to the camp really seems weird in this light.

He may not be a natural goal scorer but if you want a big, fast CF who can drop between the lines, receive, and pass then Zirkzee is your guy.

true, all great Dutch teams had that crowbar on the bench to break open a game. It’s weghorst now, de Jong, Kieft, Huntelaar.

Weghorst ran into some goals in the orange and is annoying as much to the opposition as he is to me.

Brobby is also that type and scores a lot. He usually only can be stopped by a foul but there is a bit of a referee bias against him. I reckon most refs don’t believe anybody can move him.

Frenkie out for the tournament, thats a blow. Koopmeiners didnt start yesterday due to an injury. Problems in midfield all of a sudden. Veerman looks like the logical substitution but i dont like his speed. One of the big problems the last couple of years is that the midfield gets overrun.

I've got.a Euro's pool. It comes in 2 parts, the group stage and the knockout stage.

$20, points awarded for picking the correct orderings in the group, then once the knockout stage is confirmed, fill out bracket, with points for getting picks right. Total points scored determines the winner. Number of prizes depends on number of entrants.

Koopmeiners pulled up with an injury during warm ups against Iceland, has been ruled out of the Euros. Ian Maatsen called in.

That’s 2 big blows to the Dutch midfield.

For a long in the tooth Scot like myself, Scotland used to frequently qualify for big tournaments. Sometimes they would play on my birthday or pretty close to it. Today is my birthday, it's been a long time...too long. I missed these days....I'm glad they're back. Here's to you Scotland...I just cracked open a beer.

months ago yes. Scotland were flying. Germany in the doldrums. Realistically, hoping for 4 points from group … maybe that will be enough.
