We really saw what Bello is capable of last night. His control was fantastic, he kept the slider and change-up down, but also kept them competitive. The sliders were usually out of the zone, but not egregiously so. Not so many pitches in the middle of the plate, loads on the black or at the bottom of the zone. Amazing stuff.

What got me was that he threw some 97 mph. I thought he was a guy who was like 94-95 tops. If he can eventually sit 97 and maybe top out at 98-99, that's something else.

As we were getting in to the 7th inning, I was thinking back to Jon Lester's 2008 no-hitter game against the Jays. He seemed so easily rattled, up and down... mix results, it was hard to see him turning into anything other than a "3 or 4" in a good rotation.... and was having the same feelings about Bello last night as that game being that "aha!!!" figured something out. Of course Lester still had plenty of clunkers and a few down seasons but good lord, if we get something close to Lester from Bello over the next 6 seasons that's a massive win.

Thanks, Fishy. I was hoping someone would provide some analysis of Bello's game last night, and you did it.
No problem! Statcast has these all for free. You just need to search the pitcher, click game logs, and then if you hover over the game, a little diagram appears. Click through that and you can see the game summary.

Taylor Rogers was put on waivers today by the Giants. I believe he is due to make $11-$12 mill through the end of next year. He has been pretty solid and has worked with Bailey in the past.

$12m feels like a lot for him though. I don't think it's a good use of money; you want someone in the Martin/Jansen tier for that much and I don't feel like he is.

We're in the last three days of August, so only playoff-bound teams would even think about claiming him off waivers (and get him on the roster by 9/1). If no one bites, anyone can sign him for the minimum starting 9/2.

12 mil for one year seems about market value for Rogers; last offseason Aroldis Chapman got 10.5 mil for one year and David Robertson got 10 mil plus 1.5 mil buyout/7 mil option for a second year, and neither of them were coming off top shelf closer years. It may be a tick high, but you get the added benefit of getting him for this year too.

I say go for it. If a 1 year, 12 mil deal moves the needle on the plans for the offseason, we've got problems.

I don't mind paying 12 mil on a one year deal for a very good 8th inning reliever, given the Sox' payroll capacity. The bullpen cost them a ton of games this year and they are losing their top 2 guys.

SF has also been shielding him from high lev situations this year, I think he's closer to a Booser or Kelly than a Martin/Jansen/Hendriks.

I'm fine adding another high priced reliever (after we secure a high priced starter), I just want them to be worth it and not an expensive 6th-7th inning guy.

The Sox have kinda flopped there... was really expecting Mata to fill in a good bullpen role. Maybe Wikelman Gonzalez or any other number of types like Fitts or Drohan?

Flopped in the sense of producing good bullpen arms from the non-elite starter types

Martin and Jansen are coming off the books. The team is saving tons of money on young cost controlled guys. We need relief depth right now, and next year. Booser is still out. No brainer IMO.

His peripherals are great this year. Great for his career, too. We need guys like this.

If he's so great, why have the Giants protected him almost entirely from hi-lev situations and are now trying to give away his contract? It's not an Angels situation where they can duck under the tax here.

If they don't like what they see under the hood and decline on Rogers, fine. But spend the fucking money elsewhere this offseason. Rogers' salary only hurts if it puts you over the threshold or hurts your ability to spend elsewhere, and it wouldn't have done either this year. One year deals are really, really appealing.

First of all, I love that the Giants have a Taylor Rogers AND a Tyler Rogers. They're both 33 too.

1) I don't know... Maybe they're stupid? They've allowed Camilo Doval to continue closing even though he's blown 5 saves out of 27 chances and has the worst ERA of all their frequently used relievers and a 6.2 BB/9?

2) To save some money? Again, I don't know. San Francisco might be looking to reset after falling out of the playoff race for the third straight year.

The guy is 83rd percentile in xERA, 87th percentile in K%, 92nd percentile in HH%. None of that shit has anything to do with leverage, but respectfully we would KILL to have a reliever like him right now. He gets strikeouts despite not really being able to get guys to chase, and he doesn't walk many. Sign me up.

Not here
I would hope they're the same age. They were born on the same day. To the same mother.
I recently read a thing about a ship that was near the international dateline on Dec 31, 1899 (I think) and the captain altered the path of the ship so a mom delivering twins would have them not just on different days, but in different years.

I don't know if it's actually true or not, but I want to think it is.

I'd think that somewhere there's a set of twins born in different years without such manipulation?

Isn’t Hendriks at closer the plan (or hope)? I wouldn’t go adding another high priced reliever at this point.
Probably the hope more than the plan. I wouldn't expect him to be the Hendricks of old as the season finishes up and they're going to have to figure out what issues (if any) are due to rust and reacclimation and try to assess as best as they can before the FA period.

Why? The team needs pitching. The team has money to spend. Spend it on fucking pitching.

I don't know if Rogers is the answer but the money shouldn't be the deterrent.
I wouldn’t add another high priced reliever at this point- meaning this point in the season. If they want to spend $12M+ on a reliever next season, why lock themselves in to a guy now, when other more appealing options may be available?

Keller made it through waivers (shocking) and was outrighted to AAA, and Booser started a rehab assignment there.

Booser struck out the side in his rehab appearance in AAA last night.

Crawford looked good last night.
Who the hell is Francis? Last 4 starts 29 IP 5 hits 2 runs allowed?
Out of nowhere the guy suddenly became Maddux.

It'll be interesting to see if Zack Kelly moves to the starting rotation next year. He has the stuff and the pitch mix to do it.
