This one is a bit more surprising just because the stuff still seems to be there:

07/22/24Portland Sea Dogs released LHP Helcris Olivarez.
Putting up a 3.50 ERA in 36 innings with a 12.5 bb/9 is pretty impressive in its own way.

Seems to me like they have a bunch of guys with less ceiling, & his last game was pretty good.

He also had only pitched 2 innings in the past 2 years prior to this season. But oh well.

Did Hunter Noll scrub his account of Helcris content? lol

Anyway, the cutting of non-performing FCL pitchers to make room for the new draft picks has begun.

07/26/24FCL Red Sox released RHP Yonfi Rodriguez.
Yonfi turns 22 this month & posted a 4.85 ERA (5.93 xFIP) in his 4th season in the org, 2nd in the FCL. None of those 4 seasons have been particularly good by xFIP & he's always had very low strikeout rates & very high walk rates (6.1 k/9, 6.4 bb/9 this season).

The 5'10 RHP signed for $10k in July '21.

07/26/24FCL Red Sox released RHP Willian Colmenares.
I had high hopes for Colmenares, who was a bigger investment, signing for $125k in January '22. The 6' Venezuelan RHP had a solid enough DSL season at 17 (3.79 ERA, 4.14 xFIP, 8.9 k/9, 4 bb/9), but '23 was a lost year due to injury (pitched 10 meh innings at the end of the FCL season), & he never got it together this season at all...in 12.1 IP over 10 games he allowed 23 walks & 19 hits... with nearly as many wild pitches (7) as strikeouts (8). 13.86 ERA, 3.41 WHIP.

So it's too bad Colmenares seems to have gotten derailed, but the release isn't a surprise.

Red Sox let go a couple older DSL Venezuelan right handed pitchers with last names starting with 'C' from their Red squad who will go out as champions.

09/02/24DSL Red Sox Red released RHP Enrique Carta.

09/02/24DSL Red Sox Red released RHP Greider Colina.
I had the 20 y/o Carta #202 & the 19 y/o Colina #204 in the most recent rankings.

Both actually posted rather successful seasons:

Carta - 31 IP, 2.32 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 4.1 bb/9, 9.6 k/9

Colina - 29.2 IP, 2.12 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 3.9 bb/9, 8.8 k/9

It's tough for older, smaller bonus ($5k & $10k respectively) guys to parlay competent seasons into a future with the team, though.

We lost 4 more DSL players yesterday:

09/04/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released C Samuel Arroyo. (#233)

09/04/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Jeremy Pena. (#242)

09/04/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP William Reynoso. (#223)

09/04/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Brahian Rijo. (#239)

So no surprises.

The Mets acquired Eddy Alvarez for cash.

And they DFAed Pablo Reyes to call him up, lol.

Brainer Bonaci released.

10/07/24 Portland Sea Dogs released SS Brainer Bonaci.
It's so weird to me to keep a guy around all year & then get rid of him, but whatever. Whatever he did didn't change during the year, so if it was bad, get rid of him then.

The exact nature of the situation that caused the suspension remains unknown.

I guess that resolves the issue of how to rank him on the org list. These things always have a way of working themselves out.

I would have preferred to find out it was just a fun case of mistaken identity & have a top ~15ish prospect reinstated, but it is what it is.

Not comparing apple seeds to Golden Delicious, but maybe they don't want a Wander Franco situation? Get out while the getting out is good?

Yeah, I have zero clue what he did so it is what it is. I guess they technically probably couldn't have cut him during the year suspension so they waited until it was over & did it right away.

Not sure if I would feel more comfortable if i knew what he did? But regardless, an unfortunate self-sabotage & hopefully no one was too badly damaged by whatever it is he did.

So Dalbec, Reese, Keller, etc. are already free agents? They don't need to "elect free agency" like Uwasawa did?

Reese elected free agency on 9/30.

09/30/24 C Reese McGuire elected free agency.
Pretty sure that has to do with the DFA process giving the option to the player after the season.

Dalbec would have the same thing after being DFA'd in September but I think he's been around so long his contract has expired (?).

Keller & Westbrook were probably just on 1-year deals that expired so no need to opt out, despite DFAs.

Contreras never made the 40 but I'm sure he was on a 1-year MiLB contract.

Decker & Hagenman are 2018 draft picks so their contracts expired.

Thanks! So it seems like Bobby will be moving on from the Red Sox. He would be insane to resign with this org instead of trying for a change of scenery.

Thanks for most of 2021 Bobby D!

Looks like Elih Marrero would also be a free agent for the same reason as Decker & Hagenman.

Guys from the 2017 IFA class are also MLFAs if not on the 40. So that adds Felix Cepeda ($40k bonus) & Royman Blanco ($7k) to the list.

C Note ($10k) & Bello ($28k) are both from that class, too.

I would hope so for everyone's sake... he was a 2016 draft pick & has about 2 years of MLB service time so I wonder if that puts him in the same bucket with Decker/Hagenman/Marrero as 2018 college draftees.

Apparently the sox did have an Alex Spears- so I think that is where my disassociation comes from. But I still like to think "Why can't we get writers like that?!" when I see Alex Speas released.

Did some digging. Zavala actually was the starting catcher in 22 of Giolito's 33 starts in '23 (including 22 of his 1st 23 starts).

That accounted for 22 of the 52 games Zavala started at catcher for the White Sox that year. Giolito got lit up for 9 ER in 4 IP in August 2nd & that was the end of Zavala in Chicago. He was released & went to the Diamondbacks.

Giolito overall for the season...

With Zavala:
22 GS
126 IP (5.7 IP/S)
56 ER (4.00 ERA)
46 bb (3.3 bb/9)
135 k (9.6 k/9)
1.22 WHIP

Without Zavala
11 GS
58.1 IP (5.3 IP/S)
44 ER (6.79 ERA)
27 bb (4.2 bb/9)
69 k (10.6 k/9)
1.51 WHIP

Of course... that could be chalked up to him just ending the season badly & having a terrible 2nd start of the season without Zavala, which likely led to him starting the next 21 times Giolito started... but it's an interesting connection & almost certainly not a coincidence as to why Zavala is here.

Oh sweet! I totally wanted them to pick Eaton up a year or two ago. He put up an insane 7 DRS in 182 OF innings in 2022, but KC kept messing around with him in the infield where he was bad. Fantastic speed and arm, but unfortunately the bat fell all the way off after that year.
