Golden State only had 7.3 million left of the Klay trade exception. How do they get to 18 million in the first two years?
Wait and see. It was reported earlier today that the Mikal Bridges trade has additional players in it in order to make it work.

Hollinger was speculating yesterday that the Slo-Mo and Klay deals might be combined with the Hield deal to make everything work.

Edit - And now the Athletic is reporting that this will be the case:

They will acquire him in a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that will be expanded to five teams to make it work, league sources said.

There isn't a ton of open cap space left so maybe Hield doesn't much of a choice than taking less 10 million ... he really needs to fire his agent
I dunno man….it’s Buddy Freakin Hield. He’s spent his entire career on lottery teams putting up offense against 2nd units when someone has to shoot/score because he’s unplayable against starting backcourts defensively. His one year on a playoff team to say that he sucked out loud in the postseason is an insult to those who really did suck out loud. He should sign that deal today before the Warriors change their mind…..he’s pretty much hot garbage by my ratings.

Agreed. If anything, Hield's agent should get a raise.

He was just on 2 Eastern conference contenders last season....one couldn't wait to get rid of him, the next basically refused to play him in the playoffs. And both teams had plenty of need for good backcourt minutes.

Hield is lucky he is getting 21M. He can still shoot but the rest of his game is so bad overall he is a fringe rotation guy at this point.

Bobby Marks Offseason Report Card for C's, 76ers, NYK:
Celtics A
NY Knicks B+
76ers A- (Windy pushes back on Paul George hysteria - I agree with him)

Boston is on an island by itself (in the EC). The opportunity to overtake them is going to be in 2025-26 when this Celtic team will possibly be broken up due to finances.

Would you still rate Klay's defense above Hield's? My suspicion is that Klay's is probably better (though possibly not by a lot) even if he's lost a step.

I think they both similarly stink, though if I had to pick someone's D over the next 3 years I would begrudgingly take Hield's. At least he is 3 years younger without the same injury history.

Klay has more complete defensive collapse potential.

Far above. Klay’s ability to leverage his size allows him to still be a good positional defender even if he’s lost a step in space and he’s obv more switchable to hold position on low block.

Somewhere
Buddy Hield is pretty close to the perfectly average NBA player, even if he gets there with specific strengths and weaknesses rather than a more well-rounded averageness. I’m guessing he’s earned pretty close to the average (mean, not median) salary for an NBA player through his career as well.

ESPN Sources: Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has agreed on a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie contract extension – a deal that could become worth as much as $269 million.

Marks:
Here is the breakdown: 2025/26- $38.66M 2026/27- $41.75M 2027/28- $44.84M 2028/29-$47.94M 2029/30- $51.03M
He’s an up and comer, etc, etc…

I don’t know how you can give that contract to a dude whose 3pt shooting was 28.1% last year. He was 35.4 and 36.1 before that, so maybe there’s reason to think it was a blip on the radar?
That team is destined for mediocrity when they’re paying him and Paolo max contracts in a few years.

Yea a blip. He’s a good shooter. I think this is an absolutely fine contract. Same goes for Paolo. If you are Orlando your only hope of competing is if one or more likely both of those guys become top 20 players.

Damn, when I saw that, my first reaction was, "That Jaylen contract is going to age well after all."

I feel like it's already aged well. Between his career year this year, his performance in the ECF and Finals, and the cap hiccup that cost him like $20M, Jaylen is already super positive value, even if he has a down year next year.

Martin is pretty whatever, though I guess getting any actual NBA players beyond their top 3 is a bit of a win for the Sixers. But just because he has been hot against the Celtics doesn't mean anything going forward.

Woj article says he slots in as the starting power forward.... odd. I guess it's a bit of semantics who the SF or PF is between George and him, but Martin is closer to a SG than a PF. Either way, if you are forced to start Caleb Martin, the back end of your rotation is not very good.

Outside of Embiid, this is going to be a small team. Martin is listed at 6'5 205, and he does feel really small for a power forward (Tatum's been going through this guy like he's not there for awhile now). Paul George is about the same size as Tatum (maybe an inch shorter), but seems to play smaller. I didn't see enough of the clippers to know, but basketball-reference had George as their power forward (86% of his minutes were at PF last year) and Kawhi as the small forward (62% of his minutes were at SF). Maybe it's as simple as PG is 6'8 and Kawhi is 6'7 so that's how they're listed, but Kawhi is significantly stronger, I'd assumed he was more likely to match up with opposing 4s.

*edit - I'll amend it to say that they are small outside of the center spot. Drummond is a big guy too, but he and Embiid will never both be on the court when it matters.

Martin would probably be our 9th-10th man, depending on which position we needed fringe rotation minuted from.

Speaking of our rotation.... I guess Martin turned down 5/65 from the Heat when he could extend and ended up at 4/32.

Interesting benchmark for Hauser's extension. I'd prefer Hauser, especially on this Celtics team, since he is going to get so many open looks.

But I wonder if overall he gets an extension in a similar range to what Martin just signed for (if we decide to extend him at all).

I'm seeing 4/$32M. E.g., 2024 NBA free agency: Sixers to reportedly sign veteran wing Caleb Martin away from Heat; waive Paul Reed - Liberty Ballers. Martin does get a player option in year 4. Maybe there are some unlikely bonuses that push the potential total higher.

Burks turned down MIA's offer (4/$58M extension assuming he opted-in to the last year of his current K at $7.1M) as his side thought this was "below market". Seems like a weird analysis since not a lot of teams had cap space and those who did - which ones would give Martin more than that?

MIA signed Burks to a one-year minimum deal. They need players.

Martin's impact is in the same zipcode as both Hauser and Pritchard. He feels a little better than people here are saying but we are a hometown forum so I guess if you apply the "those guys suck" filter it makes sense.

That said if you had Martin and Hauser on your bench, there are scenarios where I may want Caleb ahead of Sam. Martin is annoying AF but he is a pretty useful player.

This is probably right, but because the Heat are a worse team, they relied on Martin to play 31.1 mpg in the playoffs over the last 2 years while the Celtics only needed Hauser 14.9 mpg in this years playoff run. Obviously Martin's shooting isn't in the same zip code as Hauser, but I have a feeling he'd look more effective if teams could be more careful with his minutes and matchups.

Won't be the case in Philly, he'll likely be playing 30ish minutes in the playoffs again next spring.

I think like most “same Zip Code” bench players, Martin has strengths and weaknesses that would make him the choice in front or behind Hauser depending on the situation. On balance, I’d prefer Hauser on this Celtics team and would slot Martin behind him.

Regardless, as far as overall quality, it’s at least a semi-reasonable contract comp (though Martin may have been squeezed a bit by bad timing and agent advice). Hauser is more than 2 years younger than Martin, for what it’s worth.

Martin is a nice get for Philly given the roster—but as noted by all of you, that’s as much a statement about how thin they are as a ringing endorsement of Martin

Martin deal vs the Miami offer looks even worse with the tax differences.

Gross to see Miles Bridges get a big contract. He's an awful person.

No argument on the awful person front, but we should not pretend that there were no financial consequences for his actions. He was expected to get a max deal worth around 173M.

Instead of that deal he earned (will earn)

2022: 0
2003: 7.9
2024-2025: 75

Losing out on 90ish Million dollars is not nothing.

I'll be curious to see what the Nuggets can get out of Saric. He was unimpressive with the Warriors last year and wound up mostly riding the pine for a team that desperately needed big men.

I totally missed that the contract Ainge offered Paul Reed last year (that Philly matched) turned non-guaranteed once Philly didn't make the second round. He might be an interesting pickup for a team that needs a big and thinks he can develop.

Getting a 2032 *unprotected* Kings pick swap as payment for taking on Harrison Barnes' deal (which isn't even that bad, 18 mil this season and 19 mil 2025-26) is a really nice piece of business. Maybe the most impressive move of the offseason. A basically free lottery ticket with decent payoff odds. And given Sacto's history...they took advantage of a GM who figures he won't be around in 2032 anyway. A++++

Despite what Woj wrote, I think it might be 2031. I don't think teams are allowed to trade 2032 picks yet.

Edited to add: his ESPN story confirms it's a 2031.

If Wemby stays healthy they have a chance to build (another) dynasty with all of the picks they have.
