Kahnle is such an interesting case. Hasn't pitched more than 40 IP since 2019, has outperformed his peripherals by a lot for a few seasons (his career BABIP is ~.275 but has been .233 or below for three seasons), and since losing his upper 90s velocity he's turned into a completely different pitcher.

Now he just lives on his changeup: throws it 70%+ of the time the past three seasons, apparently threw 56 consecutive changeups in the playoffs last fall.

Can he continue to live off one pitch like Rivera did?

It's too bad the Yankees were too poor to resign him.
They have like twenty relievers, most of whom cost less than Kahnle just signed for (checking now, all of them except Devin Williams cost less, Loaisiga is somehow the second highest paid at $4.5M).

Giants traded Taylor (the good one) Rogers to the Reds, along with $6m, for Braxton Roxby, who had a 5.2 ERA in AA last year. I am puzzled. You sign Willy Adames for a zillion dollars and then trade a solid lefty reliever to save $6m?

I think there may have been signs Taylor's stuff is deteriorating. Pretty large drop-off in his O-Swing% last year to under 20%

Seems like a significant commitment for a guy who up until last season, at age 31, was just another fungible relief arm.

If his BB improvement is real, it's a pretty big deal. I liked him but the fly ball profile did have me slightly nervous.

It does seem like Estevez cashed in at the perfect moment, after putting up the lowest BABIP of his career by leaps and bounds (.229 vs. career BABIP of .309).

Re the BB rate, his percent of pitches in the zone (55% to 57%) and first-pitch strikes 64.8% to 67.5%) were better but not dramatically different.

That's very cheap. If he opts out, Detroit can offer him the QO as well. Great deal for the Tigers.

Unlikely, because it would require a very specific sort of performance, but... theoretically it seems he could opt out, the Tigers offer the QO, and then he accepts it to make a little more than his 2026 option would have paid.

Yeah, it’s basically 1/25 unless he suffers an injury which knocks him out for the next year. Certainly doesn’t bode well for Pivetta, who is not as good a pitcher as Flaherty and has a QO. What happened to all the teams that loved Pivetta’s pitch shape / stuff+? Weren’t the Astros one of those teams, they haven’t done much with the rotation still..

I did too, but like Hoffman this price basically screams that his body is a minefield.
To me this deal screams "sign early, because you don't want to get stuck once all the aggressive spenders have gone home". Luis Severino got 67/3 with an opt out.

I think that's good advice for the Pivettas of the world, but Flaherty's still in his 20s, just put up a top 25 season and barely got more than Buehler coming off a negative WAR year. If he was healthy he'd have made a mint and probably would have gone early.

Big time sports have big time trouble right now. That's trouble with a T, and that rhymes with B. And that stands for betting. Holy fuck the Pandora's Box that has been opened.

The part that gets often overlooked is that “he didn’t bet on baseball“ doesn’t mean that he can’t be influenced because of gambling debts bet on other sports.

Right. And the tweet says he deleted messages that were important to the MLB investigation. Whatever he was up to, he appears to have been aware it wasn’t anything he wanted being uncovered.

This is a clear moment of "I am shocked that there is gambling in this place..."

I am sorry but fostering and partneroing with gambling sites and betting made so easy and "painless" will lead to situations like these.

Yep. Not saying that Hoberg wasn't wrong, but all of the leagues are reaping what they sowed with their partnerships with gambling organizations and blasting us in the face with it for 3 hours a night while we try to enjoy our sports.

Can people please go back to posting the verbiage in the Tweets? The tweets never show up for me and so I have to try and deduce what in the world is happening based on responses.
