WOW. Palace coup in SF. Zaidi has made some weird moves so I'm not surprised he's out, but plugging Posey straight in like that is bold. He's been in the ownership group for a couple years and I assume has been doing a lot behind the scenes.

The tea leaves have panned out: Buster Posey has taken over SF's head of baseball operations. Zaidi fired.

As a reminder, Posey intervened to get the Chapman extension done when Zaidi balked. This undermining was in fact the end for Zaidi.

This has been a long time coming. Zaidi's inability to land big free agents despite the team's willingness to spend really hurt him.

Hiring Posey is wildly risky. He's only been in the FO a short time, and if he is terrible, how do you fire one of the greatest players in the history of your franchise?

President of Baseball Operations at 37 years old is crazy.

Former players moving up quickly in front offices so soon after retirement seems like it’s becoming a trend (Chris Young, Sam Fuld, Craig Breslow).

Especially when he's part owner!

The Giants probably hire a true GM to serve under Posey, he probably needs it more than Breslow and other POBOS types

Posey was the one who supposedly stepped in and handled the Matt Chapman negotiations midseason, which was reported at the time. Knowing that, to me this isn't surprising at all, it's like it was decided months ago.

Is the general consensus that the Chapman extension was a good one?

6/151 doesn’t seem unreasonable for the season he just had but curious to see how he ages into his 30s.

For SF specifically, I think it’s a plus just because they managed to get someone to actually take their money on a long-term deal.

I'm always suspicious when the team legend ends up with a manager/executive role. Not that it can't work (Ozzie Newsome, Jerry West), but it seems like quite a coincidence when that just happens to be the best person for the job.

a rock and a hard place
The Chapman deal feels like a Brian Sabean type of move. Reward your guys, the proven veterans, with an overpay of years or dollars in the hope that you squeeze some value from the first few years of the deal.

Haven't the Cardinals already said Goldy won't be back?
Yes. And I think Gray is #1 on their list of guys to trade (2/$65m remaining if his option is bought out), with Arenado (3/$64m left, not counting the $10m the Rockies will pay) and Contreras (3/$54 if his option is bought out) following. I imagine they're ready to strip the whole thing down for parts and start over.

Montgomery is/should opt out after the teams owner threw him under the bus
The finger pointing has begun:
In the aftermath of missing the postseason, Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick blasts the signing of starter Jordan Montgomery to a two-year, $47.5 million contract, blaming himself for making the recommendation to the front office late in spring training.
He told @BurnsAndGambo: "Looking back, in hindsight, a horrible decision to have invested that money in a guy that performed as poorly as he did. It was or biggest mistake this season from a talent standpoint. And I'm the perpetrator of that.''
Kendrick obviously is hoping that Montgomery (6.23 ERA) does not exercise his $22.5 million player option in 2025

Well, Arizona was the team I wanted in the NL, but now I feel a lot less bad about them missing the playoffs. Fuck that guy.

So, business as usual in Miami?

As far as Montgomery goes, I’m sure the owner is hoping he opts out. Neither side handled this season very well.

^^^^

Wonder if that will lead to teams having to cut payroll.

I have to admit, with the medical issues and how happy he was in Cleveland, I really thought he was permanently retired. However, since it's Cincinnati and I think the Guardians are in a much better situation with Vogt, I'm happy that Tito is back.

The NL Central is such a crapshoot after Milwaukee that this could be a good opportunity for him ... as long as he stays healthy

Wow, a year to the day since he stepped down in Cleveland. Assume this means he’s healthy, which is good. Feels like so many of these guys can’t stay gone for long, they probably don’t know what to do with themselves.

I agree that I was surprised to read this.

Anyway, happy if this means he’s healthy —
I’ll always root for Tito.

Here’s hoping for a 50th anniversary rematch of the Reds-Red Sox World Series next year, just with a different result.

Ha-Seong Kim signs a three year deal with two opt outs switches his representation to Boras Corp. He just had shoulder surgery on his throwing arm so his market could be pretty volatile.

I would be totally on board with bringing him on board in Boston and letting him name his job, even if it pushes Breslow down a rung.
Wouldn't Breslow be a part of that process? FWIW, while I can't remember the source (it may have been in one of these forums) I read that Breslow is looking to hire a GM in the coming season.
