Based on the posted match calendar, the USA's matches are already known, in terms of date and location, even if the opponents are still TBD:

Sun 6/23, Arlington TX - vs C4
Thu 6/27, Atlanta GA - vs C3
Mon 7/1, Kansas City MO - vs C2

My interpretation is that we're worried about having a road crowd while playing at home, if we play in the northeast or california or something. USSF seems perma-traumatized about having had a road crowd for our home CRC qualifier in 2016, losing which was the final nail in Klinsmann's coffin.

The main thing for the draw is, we don't want to get Uruguay out of pot 2. Any other outcome, I'd be happy with.

Incidentally, Mexico is a seeded team (B1) because they guaranteed a top seed to the winner of the 2023 Gold Cup assuming that team qualified, so Uruguay (CONMEBOL #3-ranked team) was bumped down to Pot 2 despite being #7 in Elo Ratings and Mexico being #24 (in the FIFA rankings, Uruguay is #11 and Mexico #14, so it's closer, but still). So they're gonna be playing pissed.

Austin's stadium also only seats 20k.

Why the hell is Kansas City getting two sites? That's ridiculous.
Because Chicago passed on hosting, just like it did for the World Cup.

For the life of me, I can't grasp why the Lightfoot administration worked hard to bring NASCAR to the city but withdrew from the major international soccer events. Especially since the city council made permanent the entertainment tax passed to fund the failed 2016 Olympic Bid. We're already fucking paying for a major international sporting event, at least give us one!

It’s a great draw. We all know Panama pretty well by now. Bolivia is second to last in WC qualifying with only win (against last place Peru in La Paz). Uruguay is a really, really good team and the USMNT gets them for the last group stage game when hopefully both teams will have already done enough to advance. Regardless, that game should be a great measuring stick.

Part of me wishes they had Uruguay earlier to have as many games as they can get with the highest stakes possible.

When do tickets go on sale. I want to get tickets for the semis in Charlotte for my boys for Xmas, but I also want to have some idea of the cost.
Officially mid-January, however there are tickets out there on various sites. Vivid is what is mentioned and linked to in this below article, although it only has group stage games listed so far.
Prices there range from slightly crazy to totally insane. ($1400 per seat upper bowl for Argentina / Chile at Meadowlands, while Uruguay / Bolivia there is *only $329)

I paid $75 per ticket for third deck in Seattle for a group game the last time the tournament was here. So, based on how expensive everything else is these days I'd think maybe double that?

Looks like Neymar will be out of the Copa America according to his doctor. That’s unfortunate.

Tickets on sale in Feb

so no Boston games, which sucks. Closest being NY/NJ. As a thought experiment, for a Bostonian looking to see a game or two, what is the best move?

-Take a train to NYC, pay NYC hotel prices, fight w NYC residents for tickets, etc
-Fly to a lowish COL city and see a game or two there? If so, what city is best? (Bolded are MLS stadiums, so potentially a better viewing experience)

  • Allegiant Stadium - Las Vegas, Nevada
  • AT&T Stadium - Arlington, Texas
  • Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City, Kansas
  • Exploria Stadium - Orlando, Florida
  • GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City, Missouri
  • Hard Rock Stadium - Miami Gardens, Florida
  • Levi's Stadium - Santa Clara, California
  • Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta, Georgia
  • MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford, New Jersey
  • NRG Stadium - Houston, Texas
  • Q2 Stadium - Austin, Texas
  • SoFi Stadium - Inglewood, California
  • State Farm Stadium - Glendale, Arizona

After typing I set to do a little research

If the goal is to see two games (and that seems like a nice goal to me), and also to minimize vacation days... I eliminated all stadiums with only one game, then eliminated all stadiums with more than one off-day between games. Finally eliminated mid-week games. I think there are four real options:

Arlington TX:
Friday 21 June Peru v Chile
20:00
A AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
Sunday 23 June United States v Bolivia
18:00
C AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX

Orlando FL:
Saturday 29 June Canada/Trinidad & Tobago v Chile
20:00
A Exploria Stadium, Orlando, FL
Monday 1 July Bolivia v Panama
21:00
C Exploria Stadium, Orlando, FL

Houston TX:
Saturday 22 June Mexico v Jamaica
21:00
B NRG Stadium, Houston, TX
Monday 24 June Colombia v Paraguay
18:00
D NRG Stadium, Houston, TX

Glendale AZ:
Friday 28 June Colombia v Costa Rica/Honduras
18:00
D State Farm Stadium, Glendale, AZ
Sunday 30 June Mexico v Ecuador
20:00
B State Farm Stadium, Glendale, AZ

Of the above, USA plays at Arlington and I think the Fri / Sun combo would mean the fewest days off work (practically would only need to take Monday off). Backup would be the Glendale site for similar scheduling reasons

In addition to your options, I'm strongly considering this pair, for the Austin city / stadium experience, and also proximity to some family members:

Sunday 30 June, 7pm CT - Jamaica v Venezuela (Group B)
Tuesday 2 July, 9pm CT - Costa Rica/Honduras v Paraguay (Group D)

For that, I can bring the family, visit the family, and get back on Wednesday while working remotely for some of the time.

If I don't do that, then I'd look to fly to a one-off to see the USA:

Sun 6/23, Arlington TX - vs Bolivia
Thu 6/27, Atlanta GA - vs Panama
Mon 7/1, Kansas City MO - vs Uruguay

Theoretically, with that middle match starting at 6pm ET, I could make it out of there and still catch the 10:25pm direct flight home. Home from Dallas after a 5pm CT / 6pm ET match would be harder (last direct flight 8:35pm CT), and no chance with the KC match (8pm CT / 9pm ET start) as I'd need a layover.

Just got an email that the presale is tomorrow at 10am (local time for each venue). But the link doesn't work. You'd expect them to fix this before tomorrow, but we're talking about the likes of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, so expect basic competence at your own risk.

I nabbed two tix to the opening game featuring Argentina vs. TBD in Atlanta, but I'm really psyched about grabbing 8 lower bowl seats to the semis in NYC. Argentina would play in that game if they finish first in Group A and progress to the semi. Did anyone else get tix?

There are a few pre sale lists, one through US Soccer, one through the COPA mailing list. Also it looks like the stadium tenants have a presale too (ex: Raiders at Allegiant)

pm’d you the code/link
Thx, nabbed a pair

holy f### these fees….

I'm going to the Colombia/Paraguay group match! Very excited for this one, & is a small consolation from being shutout from ICC T20 World Cup tickets...

"you thought the deals USSF made with MLS / SUM were bad and/or ridden with conflicts of interest? We'll show you how stupid deals can REALLY be!"

I don't know shit about Canadian bankruptcy law or nonprofit law, but I have to imagine that accelerating the federation toward insolvency might actually be a good thing, as it would give them more time in advance of the 2026 World Cup to get their affairs straightened out by rejecting certain contracts under the supervision of a bankruptcy court, renegotiating their broadcast deals, labor CBAs, ticketing approach, etc. We tried to steer them some high-quality friendlies last year and they were too poor to even stage the games. It's embarrassing, although I'm rooting for the new guy in charge there to get it right henceforth. Fonzie and Jonathan David deserve it, even if Eustaquio can kiss the rosiest part of my ass for injuring Gio.

Putting this Argentina NT commentary here because it's more relevant here than anywhere else.

Argentina put it on El Salvador in last week's friendly winning easily 3-0. I didn't see the game ironically, as I was traveling to...Argentina. But I did see a few minutes of the second half, and ES was just leaving way too much space and Argentina was doing training ground passing drills around them.

There were some interesting developments though, with established players picking up new roles. Tagliafico played CB and Nico Gonzalez played LB. Tagliafico has had a super interesting NT career, as he was the captain during the dark days pre-Scaloni, and although he wasn't the starter at LB at the beginning of the WC, he started 2-3 matches in the KOs when El Huevo Acuna was injured, suspended, or Scaloni just wanted more balance. The guy's a gamer and a late career transition to CB makes a lot of sense on a team that can dominate possession. He might struggle in a more even match since he doesn't have the physical profile of a CB, but he's super intelligent, has a defender's tenacity and positioning, and is certainly better on the ball and passing than a typical CB.

Nico Gonzalez has also had an interesting NT career, but kind of in the opposite way. Multiple coaches have given him multiple opportunities to start on the LW, but he's never stuck despite having quite a bit of success at the club level (perhaps more so at RW). But against ES he started at LB. This is another example I think of Scaloni tinkering with quality established players and seeing how they do in more defensive roles. LB is kind of bare for Argentina, as Tagliafico and El Huevo get up there in age, although Brighton teenager Valentin Barco did get some minutes.

Perhaps Udinese CB/RB Nehuen Perez dropped into the defense to form a back 2 or 3 in possession along with Romero and Taglia, he's another youngster that got a start. It will be hard to displace Molina and Montiel though, as those guys are established for club and country and are generally well-rounded FBs. Molina especially, even if he's had a down season at Atleti (@rguilmar @bosox4283 to confirm).

Not much else to add, other than Garnacho played very well, Brighton's Buonanotte got some run, and Scaloni gave minutes to a teenager at AMF in Carboni (playing at Serie A Monza at the moment).

Some big time players missing these friendlies due to injury, namely Dybala, Palacios, and Messi. There are some other guys I hoped to see more of, but didn't make the squad in Medina, Foyth, Almada, Balerdi, Senesi, and Alcaraz, but there are good reasons for their omissions. Foyth is a known quantity, Medina and Senesi probably need to focus on their club development, and similarly Alcaraz is promising but also likely benefits more from moving up the pecking order at Juve. Almada was an odd miss.

Yes, he’s very much had a down season. I’d go so far as to say that he’s among the more disappointing performers at Atleti this season, at least from what I’ve seen. Part of that is because I had high expectations of him. The entire defense has been poor, and he’s been part of that. They’ve allowed the same amount of goals as Girona who nobody would mistake for a defensive juggernaut.

I’ll let @bosox4283 fill in the gaps, but to me he just doesn’t seem to have that edge that he’s had in the past. He was prone to losing his mind in the past and he’s calmed that down, but it looks to me like he’s not the same player without that aggressiveness. I don’t know what it is, if the team talked to him about toning it down or if he’s just exhausted from all of the minutes he has to play, but he’s not the same player right now.

I honestly don't know what explains the dip in Molina's form. My very unsophisticated answer is that Molina simply seems off -- perhaps too tentative at times, perhaps too unsure at times, perhaps too inconsistent at times. As a result, Simeone has opted to use Llorente over Molina, which suggests that Simeone is seeing what we're seeing.

one bit of news and one realization about the format:

The Copa America will officially have 26 man rosters. As long as GGG avoids any “eyes and vibes” guys, this is great news as more players can go and possibly more Olympic spots will open up as a result. So many players are still U-23 eligible. The Olympic roster might end up weaker as a result, but more young players will get that exposure in Paris, and possibly more dual nationals use it as an opportunity to choose the red, white, and blue.

I just realized the format in the knockouts is that two groups are completely on one side of the bracket and the other two completely on the other. The reason is obvious- no matter what the results are in the group stages, Brazil and Argentina are on opposite sides of the bracket. That’s the final the Comnebol wants. It also means that the US (assuming getting out of the group) will have to beat two of Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia en route to the final, where they most likely face Argentina. If GGG can get the US to the final with that path, they should erect a statue of him in Frisco and (after finishing a huge helping of crow I would need to eat) I would gladly donate $1000 to the cause. Apologies if this has been mentioned upthread but that is a tough break for the USMNT.
