Rookie camp opened today, er yesterday(9/11), full camp next week (9/18). HOCKEY!!!

If you are looking for good podcasts, Bruins Rinkside on YouTube is great. They are mostly all down to earth, sane people(outside of the few times Felger makes an appearance), especially Poke the Bear with Evan Marinofsky and Connor Ryan. Haggs is great too, I know I'm getting legit reporting/commentary listening to them

Full camp opens today. Yay hockey!

Sweeney and Monty speaking at some point. The only known injury news is Marchand is rehabing from 3 offseason procedures (elbow, groin, abdomen). He skated and led captain's practice and said if he's not ready for the start of camp it wouldn't be far off. Didn't seem too conerning as far as his early season availability but that's also a lot of wear and tear for a 36 year old.

Quick primer on what to watch for:

Forwards

Marchand - Lindholm - Pastrnak
Zacha - Coyle - XXX
Frederic - Poitras - Geekie
Jones - Beecher - Kastelic

In terms of the locks, I think the biggest question is how Monty configures the top 6. Does he put Marchand and Pasta on the same line with Lindholm, or does he split them up? Zacha - Lindholm - Pastrank / Marchand - Coyle - XXX. I think I like that better, especially if a kid gets first crack at RW.

The biggest competition in camp will be at RW. There's an obvious opening on the 2nd line. Ideally, I believe the team would like Lysell to win the job but they aren't going to just hand it to him. Tyler Johnson is here on a PTO as a veteran would could get a look. Sweeney has spoken about being impressed by Riley Duran so he could get a look as well.

I think another spot to watch is 3C. I've put Poitras in there but it's not in ink. Poitras is coming off a major injury and hasn't played hockey since January. He also has AHL eligibility now so I think there's a scenario where he starts slow and they have him begin the year in Providence. Georgii Merkulov could push for a spot here amont the kids. It's also a potential landing spot for Tyler Johnson should he play well and be deserving of a contract.

Other names to watch up front include Justin Brazeau. He was a really nice story last year. Bigger body, showed some nice hands in and around the net but lacks foot speed and the team seemed to shift to big and fast on the bottom 6 and he lacks fast. Not sure there's a full time role for him at the start but he could be a useful 13th F. I'm not sure they really have many options for a camp surprise like Poitras a year ago, other than Merkulov and Lysell. They've talked up Duran a bit and maybe Trevor Kuntar could hang around but I don't really see an out-of-nowhere camp surprise this time around.

Defense

Zadorov - McAvoy
Lindholm - Carlo
Lohrei - Peeke
Wotherspoon

Barring injury, this will be the opening 7 on D. I don't see much room for a surprise. The depth/first guys up are some combo of Ian Mitchell, Mike Callahan, Jordan Oesterle, Alec Regula. Billy Sweezey will fight people. This will be Jackson Edward's first pro year and he's never far away from a suspension so he could cause some chaos and fun in the preseason.

Goalie

Swayman
Korpisalo
Bussi

Obviously the elephant in the room is Swayman's contract. Sounds like it's potentially done or close to done. FWIW, when Sweeney has had hold outs into camp, he's generally gotten them resolved within a few days from the opening of camp. Pastrnak and McAvoy hold outs lasted like a day or two. If Swayman isn't signed by this time next week then maybe it's time to worry.

As for the backup, they say Bussi will get a chance but they're also paying Korpisalo a lot of money so it's tough to see a scenario where Bussi wins the job in camp. I would think they give Korpisalo some rope to start and if he continues to struggle into the regular season then they'd make a switch. But we'll see. I guess an alternative is Goalie Bob revamps Korpisalo's game and they send him down to Providence to work through the changes. Still, I'd be very surprised if Bussi was the backup on Opening Night.

Group A:

Zacha - Lindholm - Pastrnak
Koepke - Frederic - Poitras
Tufte - Berkulov - Lettieri
Abate/Viel - Nelson - Brown

Zadorov - McAvoy
Wotherspoon - Mitchell
Brunet - Bavaro
Johansson - Sweezey

Korpisalo
DiPietro
Maier

That answers the question of where they want to play Zadorov and how they would configure the top 6. Assume Group B will have Lysell with Coyle (and the Marchand placeholder).

Marchy said this summer that he was skating with Coyle again this year so I'd expect Zacha/Pasta/Lindholm and Marchy/Coyle/???

First of, I'm saying this with the caveats of this being the first preseason game, blah blah, this is just what I saw, no proof of things to come. So, for anyone that missed tonight's first preseason game, these are my 3 takeaways

1. Bussi and DePietro were not great. Bussi looked uncomfortable and shaky. He let in a softie on the first he should have had, took an awkward position on the second and just looked like he was lost in the crease at times. DePietro came in halfway through the second, and while he looked better, his goal was so bad that if I played in the first game of a beer league, drank 4 Avery IPAs in the locker room after and a third game team came in and asked me to play net I'd still be embarrassed to give up

2. There are options for the 4th line. Kastelic played with an edge this team hasn't really had in a while, but took 2 bad tripping calls. Duran should be a staple on that line sooner rather than later. The other guys in the mix flashed, while Brown was Brown(bleh)

3. Lohrei and Peeke both played well, especially Lohrei. Lohrei was all over the place, making smart plays and moving the puck, initiating the offense, while also demonstrating an ability to respond to a mistake/broken play. Peeke was really solid, good D, blocking shots, but what caught my eye was he was jumping in on the offense, making plays, taking shots. If that is a preview of our 3rd line I'm really excited to watch the D unit this season

LA and Utah planned to have a shootout after their game last night regardless of the score. I love love love love love this and have been asking for it for ages.

If I'm a coach in a preseason game I'm talking to the other guy and saying hey, let's really use this as a practice. End of the 1st with about 2 minutes and an o-zone faceoff? I'm going to pull my goalie. Why don't you do the same in the 2nd. And whatever happens in the 3rd happens. About halfway into the 1st I'm going to tell my guys to take 2 delay of game penalties so we can work on our 3 on 5. Want to do the same in reverse in the second? Also, let's play an OT. And then do a shootout.
Let's give these guys some real game situations that you can't really duplicate in practice.

That would be pretty cool. Honestly you wouldn’t even have to take a penalty I don’t think. Just tell the other coach and the ref, hey I’m going to play a guy short for the next two minutes to practice the pk.

That's how the Bruins set up the Black and Gold scrimmage in Providence on Sunday. The first period was 5 on 5 for 20 minutes with power plays. "Second period" was each team got 3 two minute power plays and then each team got a minute and a half with a pulled goalie situation. "Third period" was a ten minute 5 on 5 scrimmage followed by a five minute 3 on 3 scrimmage.

that's great!
with it intrasquad you run into the issue of when the guys you want on pp/pkill are the same and can't obviously do both at the same time so it's still a little artificial. still. it's a start!

Just read a report that the Rangers are "open" to giving Shesterkin $10.5M/year. That's not good for Swayman negotiations

link?

What an odd thing for the Rangers to say. What is the point of volunteering that? Also, really difficult/awkward to walk back and pay Shesterkin less than that now.

Is it too diabolical to wonder if they see a team to the North in tense contract negotiations with a franchise goalie and maybe want to make the waters even choppier?

Report came through Pierre LeBrun so take it for what it's worth.

I had the same thought as you, what benefit does this serve the Rangers? Your point about making life difficult for the Bruins is well taken, especially if the Rangers are already resigned to paying that amount.

LeBrun reported it last night.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5791920/2024/09/24/nhl-rumblings-shesterkin-kessel-swayman/

This much we know from talking to league sources: The Rangers have indicated to Shesterkin’s camp that they’re willing to pay him more than Price’s $10.5 million AAV and thus make him the highest-paid goalie in league history.
The Rangers are doing what Swayman is doing. Negotiating in public, making the other side look like the bad guy. The Rangers are saying see, we want to make him the highest paid goalie ever! Swayman is telling the world about the low ball offers from the Bruins, putting heat on the Bruins.

Also I think the $10.5 million helps the Bruins? Shesterkin has a much better resume.

Yea, i see this as helping Boston. Shesterkin is a top 5 goalie with a Vezina and another top 5 finish. Swayman isn't on his level (yet) if he gets 10.5 Swayman hasn't earned that. So that deal should push his contract down to hopefully that 8.5ish that Swayman should be signing for (if both sides look at it normally)

If that reporting is correct, Shesterkin is’t getting $10.5. If he gets $12, do you guys still think it’s good for the Bruins, and Swayman gets $8.5?

With two years left before he’s a UFA? Yes I think $8.5 would be a good number whether Shesterkin is at $10.5 or $12.

Sure, but that’s saying that the reporting on Shesterkin doesn’t matter (because of the RFA issue renders Swayman sufficiently dissimilar), not that it helps the Bruins. ;)

Fire Pare into the sun. Unbelievable he didn't even get penalized for that knee to knee shit. For all the concern about headshots, those knee injures are fucking brutal and do plenty of longterm damage yet guys keep throwing a leg out there like that.

Poor Laine. Unbelievable talent, but just snakebitten.

EDIT: Also, double fuck Pare for chickening out against Xhekaj. Don't buy the ticket if you're not willing to take the ride fuckstick. You hurt a star, take your lumps.

I wish I had not seen the still of Laine's leg bending in ways it shouldn't.

That being said, the non-skater in me is confused about how everything developed. Laine was very mobile and moving towards the blue line. It seemed like Pare was trying to stop while skating backwards, and the other Leaf ended up pushing Laine upper body, which caused Laine's legs to move into Pare's legs. Should Pare have stopped differently? Was there some sort of flinch/flail on Pare's part that its hard to see because of camera angle/the 3 players in close proximity?

This team's floor over ceiling philosophy is so frustrating. Lysell was not given a real shot this preseason despite all the rhetoric that he would be given one. He did line rushes in camp with guys like Lettieri and Jaxon Nelson and played with 1 NHL player in 3 games (trent frederic). He was at 64% xG and scored a nasty PP goal and was generally dangerous and played well in those games.

Tyler Johnson, on the other hand, started line rushes with Charlie Coyle. He was one of the least effective players in the NHL the last 4 seasons, is 35 years old and is bad defensively and offensively. He only played 23 minutes, so SSS, but he was at 29% xG in his 2 preseason games. The Bruins choosing this guy is very unfortunate and one has to wonder that the conversation was mostly "well he's won two cups" and "leadership."

Such a frustrating franchise. At least I know who my Forbort will be this year. I had thought it would be Peeke, but its definitely the corpse of Tyler Johnson.

Yeah, Lysell didn't get a fair shake. They spoke a lot this offseason about not pursuing a veteran winger in free agency because they wanted to fill it internally with a kid. They show up at camp, Lysell gets 1 or 2 practices with Coyle then skates in games with Riley Tufte, John Beecer, Patrick Brown, etc. Merkulov started camp between Tufte and Vinni Lettieri and played games with Brazeau.

I guess Poitras may end up as RW2 and they can say see a kid made it but it feels like Lysell and Merkulov were never truly considered.

Either they saw something right away that made them think that neither Lysell nor Merkolov would be ready to start the season in the NHL, or they got hyper-focused on optionality and decided to keep the PTO guys. Don't know if the goaltending situation played into their decision making as well, but it may have.

Hopefully we will see Lysell and Merkulov as two of the first forwards called up when the inevitable injury hits. I'm actually OK with them getting regular playing time in Providence for the first couple of weeks, but still seems like a blown opportunity when it came to giving them real practice time with real NHL players.

I just think that it boiled down to Lysell has to play in the top 6. And they see the top six as:

Zacha Lindholm Pastrnak
Marchand Coyle x

And based on Marchand’s comments earlier in the week, he would rather they put Geekie there to start the season than a rookie.

Now when they eventually need Lysell’s speed & offense, or when one of the guys listed inevitability gets hurt, he’ll be up.

The best thing that Lysell can do is light it up in Providence and force the issue.

I don’t like it. I would have rather played Lysell with Poitras and Frederic, and had Coyle, Marchand, and Geekie as the “3rd line”, but I’m attempting to read the tea leaves and guess at the reason why they are doing this.

Merkulov has 151 career AHL games, Lysell has 114. What is there to gain by having them spend another month down there? Prospects are never going to be perfect products coming from the AHL. There's going to be some learning on the job at the NHL level and at some point, if you believe in them, you kind of have to let them sink or swim.

For better or worse, when the coach is coaching for his job in the last year of a contract, they're gonna take the floor over the ceiling every time.

Still nothing on Swayman.

View: https://twitter.com/_TyAnderson/status/1840770216231424221

Week to go before the regular season. One item to note is the cap hit if this drags into the regular season. The NHL calculates the cap on a daily basis so it's AAV divided by the number of days in the regular season. Each day he is unsigned in the regular season the year 1 cap hit goes up.
I don't think we'll hear anything until December. Then Swayman’s camp will either come off their ridiculous demand or he can come hang out with us in Alaska and watch the Bruins from his couch. That's assuming the Bruins actually have a reasonable offer to give him, not the rumored 6.5+ insult.
