That would be pretty cool. Honestly you wouldn’t even have to take a penalty I don’t think. Just tell the other coach and the ref, hey I’m going to play a guy short for the next two minutes to practice the pk.LA and Utah planned to have a shootout after their game last night regardless of the score. I love love love love love this and have been asking for it for ages.
If I'm a coach in a preseason game I'm talking to the other guy and saying hey, let's really use this as a practice. End of the 1st with about 2 minutes and an o-zone faceoff? I'm going to pull my goalie. Why don't you do the same in the 2nd. And whatever happens in the 3rd happens. About halfway into the 1st I'm going to tell my guys to take 2 delay of game penalties so we can work on our 3 on 5. Want to do the same in reverse in the second? Also, let's play an OT. And then do a shootout.
Let's give these guys some real game situations that you can't really duplicate in practice.
That's how the Bruins set up the Black and Gold scrimmage in Providence on Sunday. The first period was 5 on 5 for 20 minutes with power plays. "Second period" was each team got 3 two minute power plays and then each team got a minute and a half with a pulled goalie situation. "Third period" was a ten minute 5 on 5 scrimmage followed by a five minute 3 on 3 scrimmage.LA and Utah planned to have a shootout after their game last night regardless of the score. Which is why it would never happen (I took out the "to me" part, as I didn't want it anyway possibly misconstrued as a personal shot)Makes all the sense in the world ....

Nice to see the positivity around here is in mid season formMan, this season really has the opening salvo feel of a dumpster fire.
Ha, sorry. I'm still kind of reeling from the last month of the Red Sox.Nice to see the positivity around here is in mid season form
link?Just read a report that the Rangers are "open" to giving Shesterkin $10.5M/year. That's not good for Swayman negotiations
https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/3083265link?
What an odd thing for the Rangers to say. What is the point of volunteering that? Also, really difficult/awkward to walk back and pay Shesterkin less than that now.
Is it too diabolical to wonder if they see a team to the North in tense contract negotiations with a franchise goalie and maybe want to make the waters even choppier?
The Rangers are doing what Swayman is doing. Negotiating in public, making the other side look like the bad guy. The Rangers are saying see, we want to make him the highest paid goalie ever! Swayman is telling the world about the low ball offers from the Bruins, putting heat on the Bruins. This much we know from talking to league sources: The Rangers have indicated to Shesterkin’s camp that they’re willing to pay him more than Price’s $10.5 million AAV and thus make him the highest-paid goalie in league history.
Yea, i see this as helping Boston. Shesterkin is a top 5 goalie with a Vezina and another top 5 finish. Swayman isn't on his level (yet) if he gets 10.5 Swayman hasn't earned that. So that deal should push his contract down to hopefully that 8.5ish that Swayman should be signing for (if both sides look at it normally)Also I think the $10.5 million helps the Bruins? Shesterkin has a much better resume.
With two years left before he’s a UFA? Yes I think $8.5 would be a good number whether Shesterkin is at $10.5 or $12.If that reporting is correct, Shesterkin is’t getting $10.5. If he gets $12, do you guys still think it’s good for the Bruins, and Swayman gets $8.5?
Sure, but that’s saying that the reporting on Shesterkin doesn’t matter (because of the RFA issue renders Swayman sufficiently dissimilar), not that it helps the Bruins. With two years left before he’s a UFA? Yes I think $8.5 would be a good number whether Shesterkin is at $10.5 or $12.
Maybe this is the reason behind him being away? Hope all is well w/ momma and the new baby B.This is somewhat concerning. Elias Lindholm got hurt in the first practice of camp. Has not been on the ice since. He was supposed to skate today but apparently isn't ready. Monty now says Lindholm won't play this week.

I think when Johnson showed that he was worth the PTO that was the writing on the wall that the kids were going back to Providence.
Either they saw something right away that made them think that neither Lysell nor Merkolov would be ready to start the season in the NHL, or they got hyper-focused on optionality and decided to keep the PTO guys. Don't know if the goaltending situation played into their decision making as well, but it may have.Yeah, Lysell didn't get a fair shake. They spoke a lot this offseason about not pursuing a veteran winger in free agency because they wanted to fill it internally with a kid. They show up at camp, Lysell gets 1 or 2 practices with Coyle then skates in games with Riley Tufte, John Beecer, Patrick Brown, etc. Merkulov started camp between Tufte and Vinni Lettieri and played games with Brazeau.
I guess Poitras may end up as RW2 and they can say see a kid made it but it feels like Lysell and Merkulov were never truly considered.
Merkulov has 151 career AHL games, Lysell has 114. What is there to gain by having them spend another month down there? Prospects are never going to be perfect products coming from the AHL. There's going to be some learning on the job at the NHL level and at some point, if you believe in them, you kind of have to let them sink or swim.Either they saw something right away that made them think that neither Lysell nor Merkolov would be ready to start the season in the NHL, or they got hyper-focused on optionality and decided to keep the PTO guys. Hopefully we will see Lysell and Merkulov as two of the first forwards called up when the inevitable injury hits. I'm actually OK with them getting regular playing time in Providence for the first couple of weeks, but still seems like a blown opportunity when it came to giving them real practice time with real NHL players.
For better or worse, when the coach is coaching for his job in the last year of a contract, they're gonna take the floor over the ceiling every time. This team's floor over ceiling philosophy is so frustrating.
I don't think we'll hear anything until December. Then Swayman’s camp will either come off their ridiculous demand or he can come hang out with us in Alaska and watch the Bruins from his couch. That's assuming the Bruins actually have a reasonable offer to give him, not the rumored 6.5+ insult.Still nothing on Swayman.

Week to go before the regular season. One item to note is the cap hit if this drags into the regular season. The NHL calculates the cap on a daily basis so it's AAV divided by the number of days in the regular season. Each day he is unsigned in the regular season the year 1 cap hit goes up.
