I am not sure why I am not supposed to like him, but the chip on 17 and the lag putt on 18, under those circumstances, were impressive.
Why do you hate Rory? I didn't think anyone other than Caroline Wozniacki hated Rory.
Rory bombing 350+ yard drives then looking up at the announcer interviewing him. Body control is a wonderful thing.
Clark's short game was so money. Once he yanked the 2nd shot on 17th but left it in a nice lie, then hit a cross-fairway cut and stayed in the fairway, that was all she wrote.
He made great shot after great shot to bail out of trouble. Even on the 8th (I think it was) he was staring a double in the face and made a great shot to keep it to just a bogey. Really only the first shot on that hole and the 15th where he came up short.
His scrambling was fantastic.
Let's also remember how he ended his round yesterday, with a huge birdie on 18 to get back into a share of the lead.
Yup I always hate the momentum cliche 'Oh he has to sleep on that shot tonight', but it really held for Clark on the positive side and Fowler on the negative side.
That was a tough up and down even with the relief. I think the 3-putt par on 8 is the one he’ll regret the most.
For sure. And really, that should be a birdie hole for Rory. He kind of screwed up every part of it.
I'm petty. I took umbrage with how he dumped Caroline and picked up with Erica. And the announcers constant fawning...9-year drought, yada yada. And I am a big Ricky fan. And Rory already has 4 majors, including the US Open, so I wanted Ricky to win his first.
According to Athletic Pulse, McIlroy set U.S. Open records for total score (271) and greens in regulation (59) by a player who didn’t win.
He wasn't getting anything to drop from mid-long range but the short miss on the front 9 that led to a par on the par 5 stands out as the one big one that he couldn't afford.
What do y'alls think about LACC as a US Open venue? The course is lovely to look at, and played hard enough after Thursday, but still allowed those playing well to score well. It was also fun to see the pros deal with shots into the barranca, as well as the thicker grass around some of the bunkers. I didn't love the super wide fairways, even if many of those didn't play as wide at the measured width due to hills, etc. I liked the east coast prime time viewing. This would be a really fun course to play.
But for what's supposed to be the "The People's Open," it seems there were too few fans, and the course set up a location on the property limited where fans could go. 22K tix per day, 13K to corporate row/tent type, 9K general admission, and half of those allegedly went to LACC members or the club to allocate as they wish. For me, that makes it less worthy of hosting a US Open than a lot of other courses that have already hosted. I know they are back on to host in the last 2030s, but without some changes, it's gonna be another quiet, kind of overly exclusive experience. I'd heard that the USGA said they could up capacity by about 3K in the future.

Yep, and he still would have won had Clark made 4-5 superlative rescue shots. The second one out of the trap thicket, after duffing the first attempt, sticks out to me. That thing could have gone anywhere, or nowhere at all.
I missed the explanation for that ruling. Why did he get a free drop? I mean, he hit a crap shot and it got buried and too bad for him (I'm a Rory fan, so don't misunderstand). Why should he have gotten relief from that? It wasn't like it went into a person's shoe or anything. It got buried in a bunker, which is totally fair game. I mean, the other day, I had not one but TWO (first two of my life) shots bury under the lip of a bunker. I had to play them. It sure would have been nice to be able to take the ball out of there, but nope.
I think there are better US Open courses - especially in California. If they want to play it every 30-40 years or so that'd be fine similar to Brookline. I don't think it should be a regular rotation course. It also looked terrible for live viewing... the spectators were never near the action.
