I cannot come up with a good catch phrase for the title.

So after the Super Bowl is done we can start to talk about the team for the 2023 season.

As expected, Demeco Ryan was hired away. I am very happy with Wilks as the new DC (would have also liked Fangio too).

Lance and Purdy are expected to be ready for training camp and they should compete for the starting job. I love Purdy and what he did, but I believe Shanahan will have them compete.
On the one hand, I think Lance's style better fits his overall offense, on the other Purdy has proven himself in the line of fireand is yet to lose a game (the record says otherwise but I will not count the Eagles NFCCG against him). And additionally, the team is very comfortable with Purdy. How Shanahan handles this will be really important.

They are about to lose a couple of players, the main ones are McGlinchey in the OL and Jimi Ward in the backfield. Plus they only have like 10MM in cap space before they start restructuring.
They need to reinforce the OL, bug time.
Also, an EDGE rusher to go on the other side of Bosa.
I would resign Gould as well. Having a good/stable kicker is a bonus.

Those are my thoughts for now.

They are getting 2 extra 3rd round picks (and 2 extra in 2024/2025) for developing Demarco Ryan and Ron Carthon.

If they go with Purdy, I really hope they trade Lance. Kid is too good and too young to just rot away as a backup. Trade him for probably some pretty good return, sign a vet, and roll.

Purdy on the other hand is probably fine sitting as a backup

I actually think that Purdy is a better fit for the offense. I mean sure Lance has the running ability and stronger arm, but I have not seen Shanahan's offense run as smoothly/efficiently as it did with Purdy, and I have been going to games at Levi's since before they even got Jimmy G.
This article explains one of the reasons that Purdy was so effective for the 49ers. I think they Lance and Purdy should compete, but Purdy should head into camp as the starter. I get falling in love with tools, but Lance has never really had the chance or shown that he can be the guy for a team with SB aspirations. It is a good situation to be in for the 49ers. They have two young QBs on rookie deals.

Edit - If Lance does win the job, Purdy would be a heck of a backup, and if Purdy wins, the 49ers could probably trade Lance for something good. At least something like a 2nd round pick that turns into a first rounder if Lance meets some conditions. If they can't get enough of a return, just keep them both next year.

The thing about Lance os he hasn't played consistent football in like 3-4 years.

Sure he has the tools, but he has a lot to prove. I do disagree with "experts" proclaiming him as a failure though.
On the other hand, Purdy showed everything. He came in and won vs the Dolphins (a team that was riding high at that time). Then kept winning in different ways and came back vs the Raides plus came back while trailing at the half vs the Seahawks in the playoffs. Then he faced an incredible defense in Dallas, with Micah Parsons being all over the place and won.

They are in a good situation but they should make up their minds early in Training Camp. There has to be a lot of pressure on Shanahan/Lynch for Lance to develop successfully. They mortgaged a lot for him.

For sure Lance is not a failure. But injuries happen and it is tough to give up on Purdy when he did everything the team could possibly ask.
He even went back out with a shredded elbow to finish a game.
I mean the one thing I have always respected about BB and the Pats is the lack of hesitation in playing the best guy regardless of draft status. I do know that Shanahan/Lynch gave up a ton for Lance, but if they ended up finding the QB of the future with the last pick in the subsequent draft, at least they found the guy.
Good problem to have.

I think that is the main point.

BB knew that Brady was better (maybe he even thought so before Bledsoe was injured). He also thought Testaverde was better than Kosar.
Shnahan may think that Lance at least deserves a chance to lose the job, since he has not really had a chance to show what he can do. But for sure Purdy will get every chance to keep the job.

I think they need to beef up the Oline big time. Direct comparison, Mahomes was not touched behind his OL.
Oh and win or lose, another team loses after playing the Niners.

Bumping this thread for FA

So far they have signed 2 players.

  • Jaron Hargrave, to beef up the DL. This should make them even better on D next year
  • Sam Darnold as QB3/insurance policy
  • Plus they re signed Gipson
They have lost (officially)
  • Mike Mcglinhchey (we knew that was happening)
  • Jimmie Ward (same)
  • Jimmy G to Vegas.
  • DT Hassan Ridgeway signed with Denver

Overall I think it's good. No one expected them to make a splash and sign multiple players but they beefed up their DL. They will need some help in the backfield, maybe thrugh the draft, and they need to replace Gould at K.

Their skill positions are spoken for, plus what they can find in the draft. About that, they have 11 picks but none in the 1st or 2nd round. But maybe they can trade up if they see someone they like.

The shoe that needs to drop soon is how many players they can sign after the rookie deals. Bosa/Kittle for sure, but let's see hoe they make that work.

I think SF is content going into next season with Colton Mckivitz at RT. The real question on the OL (where Banks and Buford played well for rookie and second year guards), is what happens at C.

Brendel got it together towards the end of the season, but he's now a FA with multiple teams talking to him. C is a very important position in Shanny's system. That's the only position I see a big need right now.

The others that could use help -- nickel CB (hopefully they can bring Mosely back an Lenoir slides over?), TE, Edge depth can all be handled via their mid-round draft picks, in house options or later cheaper FAs.

I'm worried about C though.

Yeah, I am overall content with what they are doing so far.

Round 2 is coming up, where they need to sign the bigger deals and lose some players to FA (and replacing them).

One thing I like is they have been able to find great players with mid/late round draft choices. And they have 2 QBs under rookie contracts.

If you had to give it a percentage, how likely is it that Sam is the best QB on SF? I think it is around a coinflip. He has had shit coaching. With Shanny, he might be pretty good.

Very good question. I would think he may be as good as the other two but my guess is he knows he signed as an insurance policy.

That being said, with Purdy not being 100% for training camp a possibility and all the questions sorrounding Trey Lance, he figures he has a better shot than other places and with all the talent around him plus the coaching, he might get his chance and then get paid next year.

Lance has better athleticism and probably better arm talent. Purdy seems to have elite level processing ability to run Shanny's system.

Is it possible Sam combines those two the best? Maybe.

Interestingly I think the it's actually Purdy's job to lose if he can show promise in his throwing program.

Mosely signs with the Lions on a 1-year deal.

Means Niners need either an outside CB and Lenoir moves to nickel or they need to sign a nickel CB. Maybe Womack can fit in there, but I'd rather a more veteran presence.

This post probably fits better in this thread...

49ers seem like they're going to have a pretty big haul of comp picks coming their way...

View: https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1635818703706046468?cxt=HHwWiIC29bWczLMtAAAA

They have lost...

McGlinchey 5/$87.5m
Garoppolo 3/$72.8m
Omenihu 2/$20m
Ebukam 3/$27m
Ward 2/$13m
Moseley 1/$6m
Ridgeway 1/$3.3m
Brunskill TBD
Al-Shaair TBD

Per OTC, they're on pace for a comp 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th (Hargrave cancels a 3rd & Darnold cancels a 6th). It's a bit outdated. Omenihu might turn that 7th into another 5th.

I'm curious to see how they will replace all this talent.
Interesting part to me is that, outside of McGlinchey and Ward (who was drafted way back in 2014 at this point), all these guys were basically scrap heap finds.

Mosely was an UDFA roster invitee
Brunskill they plucked away from the aafl
Omenihu and Ebukam were guys that couldn't get on the field on their previous teams

I think the plan is maybe another free agent on the DL and then keep drafting well in late round with all the comp picks and developing guys for a year to be ready to play. Basically they're going to replace Mosely with Lenoir, a 5th round draft pick. Ward might be replaced by Womack, a 5th round draft pick.

But this will be interesting to watch. Can SF use their blue chippers (Bosa, Warner, Ward) to make enough of an impact to keep developing guys along side of them (like the did with Mosely and Lenoir). We'll see.

So far I trust in Adam Peters, he's been great in finding players that work in scheme.

Yeah all that is true and I trust their delevlopment team.

But they have a short window until they have to make some hard choices so it's not like they can draft and develop so much.

Isn’t the main question with Ferrell whether he in fact has any talent? He was over drafted, of course. And never really showed much. That said, the 9ers have been hot lately with their player development.
yeah, he doesn't have top 5 pick talent, but luckily they have Bosa on the other side.

I think there's a good chance to turn him into an Arden Key/Charles Omenihu-style contributor, which is all that DL needs.

Some news as training camp is set to start

#49ers QB Brock Purdy (elbow) has been cleared and ready to play without restrictions, per John Lynch
This is significant. He was not expected to be ready by opening day and Lance was ready to take a shot. Maybe that means the end of the Lance era? Does he get traded (there is value for a high draft pick still under a rookie contract).

#49ers Nick Bosa is not expected to practice until a new contract is agreed upon, per Kyle Shanahan
All indications are the Niners intend to sign him so not yoo worried.

I am starting to get psyched. Niners look good this year.

If Purdy is healthy and can build on last year, the 49ers are going to be really really good. I am pretty excited to see what happens. I wonder what the ultimate end game is for Trey Lance. I wonder how much money Bosa will end up getting. Should be a fun team to watch.

It looks like we have the answer: most likely traded for peanuts. Shannahan might be (is?) an offensive genius, but he's clearly not great at the job of identifying QB talent.

In my head, they just traded the picks for Purdy instead of Trey and I'll keep telling myself that unless Purdy turns back into a pumpkin.

Three first round picks for a guy who threw like 150 passes total in his high school and college career was always a big gamble. But this one ended in disaster.

Trey Lance is the starter today if the guy that was picked last in the eb¡ntire draft does not end up lighting the league on fire last year. This was the guy that handed the ball off in the wrong direction when he was in for garbage time before Jimmy G's injury.

He had the job and lost it after 2 games to a season ending injury. Yeah, they got nothing from him but not because he failed on the field (and he would not be the first top 5 QB pick to do so). Hell the Jets are also moving on from Wilson who was picked # 2 (and the Niners would have probably picked him if the Jets select Lance or Justin Fields).

What I do not understand is why straight up demote him to # 3 so early. Leave him at # 2 and shop him around, there are teams out there who can take a flyer on him for conditional picks.

Now please hand Bosa the blank check and let's start the season.

They are trying to trade him. That is why he's been demoted. He's off the field for now.

And Zach Wilson was a terrible pick. But it also didn't cost the Jets 3 firsts.

And if Lance was playing well in practice, and better than Purdy, Lance is playing. He hasn't. He wasn't. The vibes are all bad.

Wilson/Lance are looking like the worst pair of QBs picked in the top 3 since Tim Couch and Akili Smith. A complete disaster all the way around. Even if these franchises don't experience the respective nose dives of the Browns and Bengals after their 1999 picks, the value lost is just massive.

Shanny cannot go into the year with an unprepared #2 QB.
There are reporters at parts of practice, so I don't think there's any way to fake that Lance is the #2 while getting Darnold properly prepared to be the backup.
So the choice is to have an inferior guy at #2 QB or suck it up. And they're sucking it up.

This is massive karmic payback for their whole "ha ha we never wanted Mac we tricked you!" bullshit during the 2021 draft.

Meanwhile, the picks they traded turned into Micah Parsons, Cole Strange and two other dudes.

The SF media is pretty soft, but even they were sending up some red flags about Lance's practice performance.

True that Wilson did not cost the Jets any picks so there's that, but my point is that Lance has not blown it on the field of play. Two injuries derailed everything but the Niners got lucky with the absolute last pick in the draft.

IMO they should have kept pick # 12 and taken Mac Jones, or traded up to get Fields and still have 1st round picks the next two years. But that is hindsight. They wanted to move on from Jimmy G (took them 3 years to do so) and traded up to make sure they would get top talent at QB. Hindsight is 20/20.

Let's not forget they could habe picked Mahomes, and for a single win in a meaningless season they could have had Myles Garrett too.

The Wilson/Lance comparison to Couch/Smith is spot on (although maybe the book is not closed on both of them). But at least in this case, both teams have enough players around to still not be sunk on the pick.

The amount of talent they passed on in 2021 draft alone is just ridiculous. I get they were looking for their franchise QB but...man

Ja'Marr Chase
Jaylen Waddle
Penei Sewell
Jaycee Horn
Patrick Surtain II
Devonta Smith
Justin Fields
Micah Parson
Rashawn Slater

Literally could have just thrown a dart and done better.

If they stay at 12 and still want a QB they either pick Mac Jones or trade up 1-2 picks to take Fields (this is assuming everything stays as is and Lance is also picked.

Micah Parsons on the 49ers would have been awesome but I think they were going QB regardless on the 1st round in 2021.

They also could have just signed Tom Brady as a free agent either time he wanted to go there and banked a couple SBs. They have drafted incredibly well and done a lot of other things right but they’ve definitely made some major mistakes at QB.
They traded a kings ransom to trade up well before the draft and before they had even finished their evaluation of the QBs, decided on their guy and his value. They wished a franchise QB into existence and reached (and there was disagreement on Mac vs Trey internally). Then they take Trey and laugh at everyone at the press conference and pat themselves on the back for getting the media to think they were going to take Mac. Oh and they had a win now SB ready team and chose the most raw QB prospect that was going to take years to develop.
They did hit on Purdy though…we’ll see if he can stay healthy and keep progressing this year.

I think the niners handled Lance about as poorly as possible.

Like, I understand everything that happened and why. Hell, I’d even start Purdy this year if I was them, there are some parallels to Brady grabbing the job from Bledsoe (some, overall quite different). But bringing in Darnold and putting themselves in this situation is a complete mishandling disaster of the pick and the investment.

All that said, it’s a sunk cost, they have all their picks moving forward and some of the media narrative of Micah Parsons being there instead is very much the fallacy of the predetermined outcome. The Niners we’re going qb no
Matter what that year, it was never going to be Parsons (or any non-qb). At risk of being blown up on this board, I think Mac Jones would have been a huge mistake. I think he’s worse than Purdy, and would have made the niners perpetually mediocre. So swinging for Lance was still a better shot. Having both Lance and Purdy seems like the right situation, and you roll with Purdy and have Lances upside on the bench if it goes wrong. But they are making a stupid gamble on Darnold because scouts have thought he throws a nice ball since high school (but he can’t process on the field — the thing Purdy did better as a rookie than any niner QB I’ve seen since Garcia) and now are blowing up their investment.

So, I’m annoyed. I will however say the narrative that they laughed at people at the Lance draft presser is ridiculous. They didn’t leak their pick to the press and then said “we don’t know why everyone said Mac Jones?”. Like, they didn’t pick Mac, it was a completely wrong media narrative.

And of the day, if Purdy is a top 8 qb in the league they very well might win the Super Bowl and then it all worked out. I think they wanted a QB on a rookie contract so they could pay everyone else. And they now have that (and the cheapest rookie qb contract you can have). So in that way they got their outcome, let’s see how Purdy adjusts after the league adjusts to him.

P.S. fucking pay Bosa now.

To be fair, Darnold actually looked surprisingly competent in the few games he played at the end of last season. Week 18 was a shitshow (5/15 for 43 yards with 2 INT) - I don't remember what happened there - but prior to that he was solid by the numbers and looked ok to the eye.

Passer ratings in his 6 games - 104, 85, 108, 121, 108 and 3 - with a 7/1 TD/INT ratio (before the finale) and the team which was 3-8 when he was made starter went 4-2 the rest of the way.

I don't expect him to have suddenly turned into Patrick Mahomes, but he does strike me as an excellent value backup for the 49ers.

Indeed, if the last guy picked in the draft two years ago becomes Justin Herbert, it would probably be pretty good for the team.

Also, if SF plays a game in February this season and wins it, they will have won the Super Bowl. The IF is pretty big, tho.

I don't understand why SF fans are taking this Lance thing so personally. It was a bad trade and a bad pick. It happens. SF is accepting the fact that Lance sucks, and to be clear he SUCKS, (he can't hit a target anywhere on the field, which is why he's not even good enough to be a backup) and moving on.

Why is that a bad thing? The worst thing to do would be to compound the mistake by holding on too tight.

Maybe a little sensitive due to basically giving away a #2 pick in James Wiseman a few months ago and now this? That's two very high profile top 3 pick flops for the same fan base. Of course, it's a fan base that has seen tons of NBA and MLB titles over the past decade or so.

Shoot, we get pissed when 4th rounders don't work out.

Pissed is much different than defensive. Lance was one of the worst trades and picks in NFL history. That is an objective fact. SF is also one of the best run and coached franchises in the NFL They make the playoffs almost every year and whenever they do, they make it to the Championship game. They have been awesome and Shanahan turns cast-off QBs into some of the best in the NFL. That is also an objective fact.

They're also a team that hasn't won a SB in 30 years despite getting very close. That can be frustrating as a sports fan even though they've obviously had a spoiled history. As a Celtics fan, I can relate. I know several Niners fans and none of them are really taking the Lance thing personally - they're just annoyed by it because they know how close this team is/has been and what the incredible opportunity cost of acquiring him was. And they know NFL windows can close very quickly.

I agree with your takeaway on the trade. It was simply horrendous. No other way to put it.

I think this a great way to analyze the situation. They traded into the 3rd pick and we all assumed (correctly) that Lawrence and Wilson were going 1 and 2 so now what? If indeed they had settled on Lance before making the trade then maybe we are wrong, but this is not like the then San Diego Chargers trading to move up to #2 to take either Manning or Leaf. Also, keep in mind they knew Jimmy G was there for at least 1 more year so they thought they would have time to develop Trey Lance.

As to the bolded, they did not know when Purdy would be ready. They were not willing to go into training camp with Lance and flotsam and jetsam as backups. For better or worse they signed a good backup QB and then let the chips fall where they may if and when Purdy came back. That Purdy was ready and had no restrictions during training camp was an unexpected bonus.

Yes, pay Bosa now. As in, give him a check signed by the Yorks and let him fill the numbers.

Yeah, it all makes sense in isolation, I think there’s just a lot of frustration because as fans we didn’t see Lance fail (like Jets fans saw with Wilson). He started 2 games before being injured, won 1 of them and the other was in not great weather.

I think if Lance had gotten a longer run of games without improvement fans would have an easier time accepting the sunk cost of the investment. But, probably emotionally and not logically, it feels like we never got to see what the team invested in.

You’re right about Darnold, I think it just feels like a letdown with someone who failed elsewhere when we haven’t seen Lance fail in real games (obviously we haven’t seen him succeed either).

Once Purdy takes snap 1 against Pitt a lot of this goes away. It’s all training camp content anyway.

The biggest surprise ever was Brock Purdy playing the way he did.

If he is successful this season it may become the biggest QB surprise in NFL history. When Jimmy G went down vs the Dolphins no one thought the Niners had a chance. This was a guy who had done this in a previous game

purdy handoff.jpg

His success changed the Niners dynamic. And while it is true that no one saw Lance fail on the playing field, the Niners have decided Purfy is their man. It is good to make that decision and plan forward.
Again, pay Bosa.

Tom Brady probably a bigger surprise, tbh.
