Im only surprised since they were both locked up through 2027. That has to be a hard pill to swallow for ownership and you’re stuck with Murray.
That was a hilariously bad extension at the time, two guys who looked bad at their jobs saved by an 11-6 season that involved losing 4 of 5 to close out the year getting huge long extensions.

If Mayo’s goal is to be a head coach, he should take a DC job. I expect it’s been hard, and will continue to be hard, for him to get to the front of the line in HC searches without being able to demonstrate clear responsibility for running a defense.
Probably but Mayo has already had some HC interviews and might be able to jump without a DC title. More guys have seem to do it recently. Didn't hurt Flores although he was the clear leader excluding Belichick while Mayo takes a backseat to Steve B in play calling.
Next year is probably a big year for Stefanski so Mayo might decide Cleveland isn't the spot for him. Although it wouldn't be surprising if he received multiple offers this offseason.

Vrabel held a presser today addressing the needs going forward. Doubt the team would have him do so if he wasn't going to survive the 0-7 finish. So that looks to be off the possibilities list.

I think if Mayo gets a HC job the Patriots pick up extra draft picks. Not sure that's the case if he jumps to a DC role.

Count me in the minority who feel they are stuck with Murray past next season. They are going to have to bite the bullet at some point unless he makes a leap next year and after next season would seem to be their best opportunity.

After winning on the last play of the game and thereby costing the Texans the leverage having the #1 draft pick.
I'm not going to blame him for his crappy QB throwing a miracle TD, but if he just has them kick the XP instead of going for two, they could have still gotten the #1 pick with a tie.

BTW this has gotta be the quietest Black Monday in at least a decade.
Now that Vrabel and Stefanski are safe -- they've both hunting for new DCs -- there really isn't an obvious candidate until the Bucs knock off the Cowboys

I went back and looked at first post where I was ballpark thinking 5 openings

We have:
Broncos
Panthers
Colts
Cardinals
Texans

Is that going to be it?

Unless one of the first round losers decides to fire someone, there's not another obvious other spot

Kingsbury despises recruiting so this makes the most sense to me. I don’t see him going back to the NCAA.
Plus with Reid as the head coach and and Mahomes at quarterback, he won't have to work that hard

I still don't see how McVay stays. He won his SB. He's going to get a bag from a Network (Amazon?) and go there for a year or two then pick a better situation as the Rams spend 10 years rebuilding.

True, add him to the list. I guess job desirability is the next thing to think about.

Because he might not think it is a 10 year rebuild and doesn't want to leave after a disappointing season. He reportedly has an excellent relationship with Snead and ownership. Not saying he definitely stays and most reports are that he likely leaves but it is pretty easy to see how he may decide to stay.

I agree. Saw him in a documentary recently, but for the life of me, I can't remember what documentary. He seemed like a prime candidate for early burn out, based on his personality. Not a good look though, bailing when the ship is sinking (has sunk?). Maybe he gives it another year to go out on a higher point than this year.

The “look” is fine. The team mortgaged their relative future to go for it, and he brought the Rams a championship. If he’s burnt out or just wants to give broadcasting a shot, he’s earned that right, without controversy

Right. By way of analogy, there hasn’t been any loud chatter that Sean Payton abandoned the Saints despite having walked away with their having no good QB succession plan for Brees, major cap issues and accompanying talent attrition.

He’s a media darling and will also be part of that media. Plus the NFL fan base in LA isn’t exactly all that demanding. I think he’ll stay shiny for a while. If he does leave, I will be interested to see his second act as a coach when/if that happens. Imagine him taking over for Reid in KC if he retires or something. That would be terrifying.

Also, Pete Carroll left as USC burned and didn’t seem to catch too much flak.

Jim Murray just said in his updates that McVay has given permission to his entire staff the ability to go seek other job opportunities....certainly doesn't sound like a guy who plans on sticking around

How do these coaching contracts work in term of is it a 5 year deal is "5 years coaching the team" vs "five years on the calendar"?

I believe when Lackey was rumored to sit out for a season because of the structure of his contract, we found out that if he sat out for a year he would still be under our control for the following year. Is it similar with NFL coaches?

I don’t know the answer on your contract term question. Contract terms for coaches could run through the duration of the league year, which has a mid-March anniversary; that’s how player contracts generally work. Alternatively, the term could run through the duration of the NFL season (the Super Bowl) or the team’s season (the last game). It’s a great question I’ve not seen answered squarely.

I’m not sure if coach retires whether the contract term is tolled. In Sean Payton’s case, his Saints contract runs through 2024, so they’d hold his rights regardless, but I don’t know if the contract term technically tolled when he retired.

Who will be the first coach hired?
Which team will make the first mockery of the Rooney Rule?
Which coach will be hired to make everyone say "that retread??"
Which coach will be hired to make everyone say "when will teams learn that you need experience??"

Wilks did a great job in CAR as the interim coach, honestly some other team should send in their request to interview on him. He got pretty screwed in ARI. He wasn't good, but 1 year with a terrible roster (Josh Rosen was his QB) isn't a fair shake.

Yeah, I think Houston will probably do this. This rule is the classic good intentions/bad execution example.

I mean, let's be honest, DEN worked out a deal for Sean Payton in advance, maybe he says no and it falls through, but that tells me they picked their (white) coach before they even requested a single interview from a minority candidate.
