Why? It seems like a reasonable compromise when the contact is marginal. It would be better if there was more of a "playon" attitude when both offensive and defensive players seek out contact.
IOW: it's not as bad as NFL, where you can call penalties on every play. But, the refs have to find a line of physicality. And "late whistles" are part of that line.

Credit to Darvin Ham. He figured out this Nuggets team at Halftime of Game 1. The Lakers look like the much better team since.
The Lakers would be getting smoked if they weren’t getting so many FTs. Their shooting is garbage.
Nuggets are getting a bad AD game (Alternate Day), and a favorable whistle, and are still down. Need Jokic to be much more aggressive.
Forcing Javie to give an opinion before the replay was announced was the best thing Mark Jackson's ever done since the Menendez brothers trial.
He tried to get away without making a call prior to the refs announcing their decision, but the broadcast crew wouldn't let him. Poor Javie.
The Denver radio announcers are Heinsohn level homers: they were screaming about "Jokic getting leveled by LeBron" .

Its almost but not quite as good as the Celtics doing this to the Lakers. Runs against them are simply glorious.
Lakers look tired. More than 5 minutes since their last made field goal, and just 5 points total in the quarter.
