Tuesday at 8:30pm on MLBN. It's like the NBA draft except the top 6 will be chosen in a weighted order as opposed to just top 3. The lucky teams will see a big bump to their overall money pool for the 2023 draft class, in addition to obvious more available talent in the first round.

I would guess this could also dramatically change a team’s approach to FA. If the Sox were to pull a much higher draft pick, are they a lot less likely to sign a FA who costs them that pick and associated bonus pool money?
You can’t lose first round picks for signing FAs anymore, pretty sure.

Correct, I’m referring to the second round pick they would loose, which is still going to be the something like the 35 - 40th player taken, and add over $1M to their pool. Where this falls has to be added to the cost of any FA signings.

If the Sox were going to add Correa, you probably don’t blink at this, but if it comes to Nimmo or Swanson, I start to think twice.

Two things, there are eight compensation picks between rounds 1 and 2 this year, so the first pick of round 2 is #39 overall:

Secondly, pretty sure the lottery is only for the first round, so Boston’s second round pick is already set at #53 overall.

So I totally missed the boat on the draft lottery. Has does it work? How do they figure out the odds teams have of landing the first pick etc?

Good thread regarding the draft lottery tonight
Today is MLB’s first-ever draft lottery, about which I have been inordinately curious for reasons I don’t fully understand. Here’s what I’ve learned:

— MLB adopted best practices from the NBA and others which included hiring Price Waterhouse Coopers to oversee/audit the process

— The actual drawing of teams will happen behind closed doors today. They will film it, but not for viewers — just to have that video in case… like, the Cubs or Red Sox end up with the first overall pick and everyone is wondering how (Like, Boston has 0.8 percent chance)

Not NOT related to the above in my mind, only one team executive will be in the room at the time of the drawing and that executive is Mike Rizzo. A reporter will also be in the room.

MLB official and former Mariner (next years draft is in Seattle) Raul Ibañez will then announce the results of the lottery one by one.

The Nats, A’s and Pirates all have equal odds (16.5%) for the first overall pick. Reds next with 13.2 percent, Royals 10. Brewers, last team out of the playoffs, have a 0.2% chance.

I’m just imagining the *~DISCOURSE~* if one of the big market teams with low odds gets the first overall pick somehow, but also that Mike Rizzo is most likely to swear at someone if he thinks anything isnt happening the right way. PriceWaterhouseCooper is one thing. Riz, another.

The REd Sox were in #13 place for awhile until the very end of the season. Could have jumped up! /s

I’d say this was successful. After an awful 2021, Minnesota went out and got Sonny Gray, paid up to keep Buxton, and most impressively, seized an opportunity to sign the best FA in the class in Correa. It didn’t work out for 2022, but they spent real money to get better and lucked into the #6 pick overall. Oakland got fucked in the process but they (their ownership I mean) deserve it.

Now just ban Pittsburgh from the draft entirely next CBA.
