If true that might have interesting implications for the Patriots. If the Jets are now drafting behind the Patriots rather than in front of them. Most of the Jets mocks had them picking an O lineman like Paris Johnson or Peter Skoronski.
yeah an interesting flip seeing the 3 teams have some real overlap on big needs.
GB needs passcatchers (WR/TE)
NE needs Passcatchers (WR/TE) and OT
NYG need OT

All could draft other positions (particularly Defense for GB and NE) but I think this trade slightly increases the chance the Patriots take an OT or trade back, and slightly decreases the chances of a passcatcher.

I am really surprised the Jets will get no additional compensation if Rodgers retires after this season.
They have no viable alternative for a QB of Rodgers’ caliber (or anything close) for 2023, and they basically committed publicly to this getting done. No way they could fail to bring him in, not in that market.

Their biggest point of leverage was the Packers looking to avoid the 60M roster bonus, but that didn’t have to be paid until conceivably early September, and they couldn’t afford to lose the on-ramp of training camp/preseason.

yeah once your GM says "we'll get it done for sure" you lose some leverage on the margins. And the team that wants to win this year always has more to lose, if you don't get it done this draft the pick price basically goes up, because 42 is more valuable than your 2nd next year.

Probably everyone agreed it would be too complicated to figure out if he actually retired.
I wonder how hard they pushed for that 2024 2nd->1st to be a 2025 2nd->1st based on Rodgers playing 65% of snaps in 2024 rather than 2023. They got injury protection rather than retirement protection.

I mean, there’s gotta be a better than 50% chance he retires at the end of this season, good or bad

He said he was retiring at the end of last season before he decided in the darkness he felt disrespected.

Jets have built the entire plane around getting Rodgers. They brought in his own OC. They’ll bring in a shaman if they have to. This has the makings of a Russell Wilson level dumpster fire.

It's honestly a pretty fair deal. If Rodgers wins a playoff game or two, I don't think most Jets fans will mind. When you haven't won for 50+ years and you just blew through another highly drafted QB, what is there really to lose? They'll be a tough out this year. GB will likely be awful this year and can dream on next year's QB class and two first rounders. It's pretty close to a win-win.

Nonsense.

The Jets become title contenders with this move. Wilson never was able to do it on his own. Rodgers has proven he can do it on his own, until he chokes in the playoffs. So they obviously won't win the title. Because Rodgers chokes in the playoffs.

But this won't be Russell Wilson, who is losing a step and had a truly bad coaching staff. Rodgers is making the playoffs.

edit - ESPECIALLY because Rodgers is the pettiest mofo in the history of pettiness, he will make it his life's goal to treat his opponents in 2023 like he treats his family.

Clearly the Pats are the fourth best team in the division now. They can still have a good season but it just got a lot harder. Long term this doesn’t help the Jets but that doesn’t matter for 2023.

Russell Wilson had…the guy that they just brought in for Rodgers. Not sure where you’re getting that he’s going to have better coaching.

He’s going to do whatever he wants. Hackett is the OC in title. He’s going to be getting Rodgers’ coffee in the mornings.

If it blows up everyone is likely gone but if they play well, it might give them some stability which has been awful my entire life.

This is clearly a short term plan for the Jets (unlike Wilson for the Broncos), and with far less draft capital. I doubt it could blow up as badly so matter how ugly things get.

I also was a bit surprised the conditional compensation is entirely based on 2023 injury. If Rodgers has a mediocre relatively healthy 2023 then calls it quits they are on the hook for a 1st round pick in 2024. Interesting.

Hackett is the head coach of the Jets? I apologize, I thought Saleh was still there as head coach.

It can't blow up, it's too short term and the Jets didn't give up that much.

It's not like their season would be better with Zach Wilson.

This is the best news the Jets have had since SBIII.

What about anything that the Jets have done so far makes you think they can/will handle Rodgers if he decides he’s calling the shots?

Because so far, it looks to me like Aaron Rodgers is the GM and the OC. If the Jets don’t make the playoffs this year, Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh will be unemployed.

Maybe it’s fine. But everyone assumed Wilson would be fine until he left the ecosystem Seattle built around him.

No wonder the deal took so long. They needed an army of accountants to work out the details.

This is good value for a guy that the Packers were hoping to GTFO anyway. And the Jets finally have someone who's an actual NFL QB.

The Jets should have made the playoffs last year and they had the worst QB in the NFL, one who was actively trying to throw the ball to the other team.

Now they have Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is a pretty lousy person and a poser and a douche but he is also one of the most talented QBs in the history of the NFL. How does that make the Jets worse than last year?

You're inventing scenarios in your head for some reason that don't have anything to do with what we're talking about. Who is talking about Saleh being fired? What does the 2024 offseason have anything to do with the 2023 season? How do you think Rodgers is going to go in there and take over for Saleh? Like a coup? In the NFL. By a QB who is on a mission of revenge.

And you're the one who said Hackett was the coach of the NY Jets.

I know he’s Aaron Rodgers and wouldn’t bet against him, but he wasn’t very good last year and he’s not getting younger.

His team was not good(especially compared to what the Jets have at WR) and he was checked out and being a baby because he's a petulant baby.

A motivated, angry Rodgers will be an excellent QB. He was motivated and angry after the 2020 draft and he won two straight MVPs.

Don’t love this both because the Jets get a legit QB at a not insane price and because GB moving ahead of the Pats in the first round makes it less likely they can get JSN or Kincaid. Oh well, they’re still the Jets.

Reminder that Rodgers “motivation” was the Packers asking him, “hey bud, you retiring?”

Again, so?

I have repeatedly said Rodgers is a petty baby. His motivations are garbage. Have I not been clear enough about that? But that doesn't matter to the Jets. They are getting an angry, petty QB who wants to prove a point.

That QB is a two time MVP. Who will have an amazing regular season and then choke in the playoffs.

It matters because when your motivation is so shallow and you had both feet in the retirement pool, you probably aren’t going to get “King of Petty Revenge” Aaron Rodgers if things don’t get off to a strong start.

Also, because Aaron Rodgers is a petty a-hole, there’s a potentially high combustibility factor if some of his teammates take exception to the organization kissing his feet. Again, see Denver.

Wilson was never good when he was the focal point of the offense. Which is why he's famously never had a single MVP vote in his career.

Aaron Rodgers has won 4 MVPs. I have absolutely NO idea why you continually are comparing Russell Wilson to Aaron Rodgers. There is no comparison.

Why is he a lousy person?
Lying to everyone about your vaccination status isn't great.

Packers' Aaron Rodgers admits he misled public, media by saying he was 'immunized' against COVID-19

It all started when, at a press conference, he stated that he was "immunized" against the virus after being asked by a reporter about his vaccination status.

After Rodgers had his medical exemption was denied by the NFL, the Packers signal caller said that he took part in an "immunization process through a holistic doctor," because he wasn't comfortable taking the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Aaron Rodgers >>> Russell Wilson, so the trades are not at all comparable. Assuming he is able to stay healthy and effective (an obvious concern at age 40), this move makes the Jets contenders. And Saleh is going nowhere; truly bizarre to think that this move undermines Saleh's coaching authority - the NFL doesn't work that way.

He was motivated after Shailene Woodley and started dating Mallory Eden. Checks out.

Rodgers is Kyrie Irving with a football.
I wish him and the Jets every possible misfortune and will take the under on whatever convention wisdom projects his success to be in 2023-2024. Petty motivations won’t overcome age and a declining skill set.

Can’t you just be happy you got a man on a Christian spiritual journey and enjoy that? No, you have to equate my quarterback to an antisemite and wish us harm. Not nice.

There's no way he ever had a toe in the retirement pool. The dark room had nothing to do with it. The $60 million had everything to do with it.

Just like there's no way that he's walking next year and leaving $50 million on the table to play 17 football games. There was never any doubt about him playing. It's all bullshit. And in the end the trade compensation shows that the Jets fully know there's no way he's retiring next year. Everyone has been posturing.

I might be wrong here, Justis Mosqueda who knows the Packers as well as anybody thinks they want an OT at 13 and suggests it might be Darnell Wright.

The sneaky benefit of this trade to NE is that NYJ were a possible trade back candidate at 13 to recoup some of the draft capital it will require to land Rodgers, now that they are behind NE the Pats get a better shot at trading back if they have a dance partner.

What are the chances that Rodgers is effective in his forties? The only other QB to do it is obviously the GOAT and an extreme aberration. I feel like this is possibly being underappreciated as a real (likely?) outcome beginning this season.

Is there a 10% (higher?) chance that Rodgers just isn't that great next year because Father Time decides to show him that he always wins?

For example, he remains relatively healthy, although he always seems to have bumps and bruises that he'll make aware to the audience, but just isn't the same QB at age 40 that he was at 39?

I expect he will be good. Maybe occasionally great. I am not sure he needs to better than pretty good to make them a playoff team and maybe even to get a home game.

best case the jets win 2 playoff games in 23 and lose in the afc champ still will have to start over after 2024
worse case see denver 2022 on a bigger media market

I’ve been saying for a while and to a lot of people that if he wins two playoff games I’m going on a darkness retreat

2 playoff wins could be SB appearance
