Miami (oh, Miami!)
This is a more focused thread to discuss who we have, what the IF looks like, and what we might expect, pros and cons. Please, no trade-speculationor/Shadow-GMing. Plenty of threads for that.

We already have a 2023 OF thread: https://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/2023-outfield.38433/ However the Trevor Story injury impacts what's going on there.

Of the 26 man roster, 13 max are pitchers, so that leaves 13 slots. The players below are on the 40 man as of today (with the exception of Duval?)

C - McGuire
1B - Casas
2B - Arroyo (Mondesi)
SS - Hernandez (Mondesi/Arroyo)
3B - Devers (Turner)
UT - Mondesi

RF - Verdugo
CF - Duval (Hernandez)
LF - Yoshida
4th OF - Refsnyder?

DH - Turner (Yoshida)

That's 11 bold names. Who else goes where? And why?

One has to be a catcher - but who do you select, and who do you select for the final piece?

Others:
C: Alfaro (MiL deal)/Wong (option)
1B/3B: Dalbec (option)
OF: Tapia (MiL deal)
SS/2B: Story (injured, perhaps back ASB)
Everything: Rafaela (perhaps ready later in season)
Arguably CF: Duran
2B: Hamilton
2B: Valdez

My gut says Wong starts the year in Boston; Alfaro's first opt out is in June so that gives Wong a couple months to show something, where they probably have a better idea of what Alfaro looks like at the MLB level already.
The other guy is probably Bobby D, we're least redundant at 1st and 3rd.

Agree on giving Wong 1st shot at the job.

In terms of the last bench role, I kind of hope Valdez wins it, or to a lesser extent Hamilton. They would provide nice depth in conjunction with Arroyo's ability to play 3B.

& I kind of think Valdez could be the strong side of a 2B platoon with Arroyo.

I think Wong starts the year in tandem with McGuire. Alfaro is intriguing but might provide more effective depth as a non-40 catcher who can be added if needed.

The 13th spot is the tough choice to me. I'm going with an infielder and based on senority, that makes it Dalbec to start the year. But Valdez or Hamilton have a strong case, especially if one of them has a hot spring training. Having one of them on the roster makes them the defacto 5th outfielder since they can free up Kike to move to the outfield when necessary (of course, so does Mondesi).

McGuire
Casas
Arroyo
Hernandez
Devers
Yoshida
Duvall
Verdugo
Turner

Wong
Refsnyder
Mondesi
Dalbec

Or Arroyo in a pinch.

I'd agree with you, @JM3, and @simplicio that giving Wong a chance with Alfaro in the background is probably the best use of resources, with Alfaro providing a safety net of sorts until the summer. A decent hedge against injury.

IMO, at this point Tapia's in the same injury-hedge boat for the OF of: Verdugo, Yoshida, Duval, Refsnyder, (Hernandez). I don't recall the terms of his deal, but if he's able to elect free-agency after a certain point like Alfaro is, then Duran becomes next-up on the OF depth chart.

I think Hamilton and Valdez would benefit more from regular ABs than sporadic exposure to MLB pitching. Hamilton because he needs the reps, and Valdez both because he needs the reps and isn't anything special at 2B. I see them as quasi-break-glass emergency guys at this point, unless Valdez has a monstrous spring training. And even then, you'd want him hitting instead of riding pine.

So I think that leaves us with Dalbec. We do need a semi-credible backup at 1B. Dalbec (and to some extent Duran) seems to be at the "prove it v. ML pitching" stage of their development. However, neither of them need to be in the majors, and they're not really blocking anyone by filling a AAA slot.

From Bloom's comments it appears quite possible that Mondesi isn't ready for Opening Day. That means there is one more spot available which pretty much has to go to someone capable of playing MI. That increases the chances of either Valdez or Hamilton, if not both, breaking camp with the team (unless Bloom acquires another MI before then). Assuming we haven't traded or released Dalbec by then I'd rather see him playing every day in Worcester to find out if he's able to show any indication of turning a corner. If he does maybe there's some eventual trade value, if he doesn't it's time to cut bait. He's redundant on the major league roster if Devers, Casas, Turner, and Yoshida are all healthy, there's no point carrying him if he's going to get maybe 5 AB per week. I'd rather carry both Wong and Alfaro which allows Alfaro to have the AB's Dalbec would have had and frees up Wong to back up 2B if necessary. I know this requires adding Alfaro to the 40 man roster.
So I'd add Wong, Alfaro, and a MI to the bolded names in the OP, taking Mondesi off the list until he's ready.

I am of the opinion that they are still missing a middle infielder, preferably a starting caliber SS so Kike can spend at least half his time in CF. Mondesi can't stay healthy, isn't healthy now, and has never been all that good when healthy. I think there was value in making the trade but counting on him as anything more than a bench piece/partner for Arroyo at 2B seems foolish.

Time for a Spring Training check-in perhaps:

En Fuego: Alfaro, Duran, Tapia, Dalbec. (And Chang in the WBC.)

Meanwhile: Turner was beaned, Wong has a hamstring injury, Refsnyder is ice cold.

Palka seems adequate, as do Crook and Allen. Valdez, Hamilton, and Rafaela look to be as advertised, with ML readiness in that order perhaps.

What do the tea leaves look like at this moment?

Some interesting tidbits:

Alfaro has 140+ MLB innings as a left fielder. Is it possible that Wong's recovery and Refsnyder's demise might have us with 3 catchers on the 26?

Tapia is a LH hitter (for whoever said he was a RHH on the other thread) but he has a reverse career split, (.283/311/.373 vs. LHP, .275/.320/ .397 vs. RHP). Also, the cool blonde hair.

Personal opinion: Everybody reverts to mean. When somebody tells you who they are, believe them. Duran and Dalbec will break out hearts if they keep them. Sell high and move on down the road.

You’re probably right about Duran but he hasn’t had enough consistent ML time to make that call IMO. His AAA track record suggests he should have some success and he’s young enough to change his approach and attitude. This is make of break for him and I don’t really see a path on the Sox where he’ll have that space. Really should get packaged and traded

ATM this team seems hopeful of benefiting from some of those proverbial "tough decision/good problems". I think many of us are rooting for a McGuire/Alfaro tandem behind the plate with room for Wongers in WOOstah. According to @Coachster concerns of Tapia once again making the outfield too left-handed seem to have been unfounded . IF Duran and Dalbec have figured anything out that's a big plus as far as being able to contribute in Boston or in terms of raising their trade value. Story is now taking ground balls and while I'm not going to read too much into that, it's certainly better than him being unable to do so. Also Mondesi seems to be progressing and Turner doesn't look to miss much time after his beaning. Though he's not feasting on the best pitching that MLB has to offer, Yoshida has been looking really good at the plate. RFsnyder in his utility role last season was a bright spot, that some of these others might make him expendable is a plus. Overall, things seem to be moving in the right direction.

Game 58 check in on the Infield thread:

Chang was up and then injured (wrist bone on a checked swing). Arroyo also went on the IL for a stretch. Pablo Reyes was grabbed from the A's for cash, and Enmanuel Valdez was promoted.

The main issue thusfar has been the absolutely craptastic play of Enrique Hernandez at SS. He has only 3 more DPs than errors. Not even Renteria was that bad.

Maybe Hernandez & Valdez can be the 2B platoon & they can try giving Arroyo SS until Story or Chang is ready. Arroyo has played a couple hundred innings of non-inspiring but not completely disastrous innings of SS in his career...

From Henrique at BSJ:

Cora told the media on Friday that Arroyo will see time at shortstop after he returns from the injured list. He played nine innings at shortstop for the WooSox Friday and is back in Boston so the team can reassess his injury situation.

Here's where I'm at with this whole SS debacle. OK, so injuries are part of the game. That said we knew that both Story and Mondesi were going to miss considerable time to start the season and that Kike' would likely see the lion's share of play at short. Out of the other options that Cora has gone to (Arroyo IL, Chang IL and Reyes) Hernandez has the most experience at the position and for better or worse it looks like Cora's sticking with him. Poor defensive play extends innings and pitch counts. I get that the team doesn't want to rush Rafaela to the majors, but he's on the 40 man roster and this team has a hundred games left in the season to find out if a playoff run is in the cards. How much risk would there be by promoting him to play solid defense at short. Tell the kid that he's here short term to fill a need, focus on defense and not to worry about the offensive end of his game.

Chang was supposed to be the backup, no offense SS bridge to Mondesi/Story.

That said, he's down, and it's likely they'll consider Reyes and Arroyo at SS when Arroyo returns - more likely than throwing Rafaela into the lion's den.

But since Cora/Mgmt. continues to play Hernandez, there seems to be some willful blindness there.

Yeah I get it, mostly just thinking out loud while tempering my frustration. The thing about Arroyo and Reyes is this. Arroyo has played the position in just 31 of his 251 MLB games played with only 19 starts and Reyes just 13 games (9 starts) in 128 MLB games. With Chang seemingly having a setback in his rehab and Hernandez playing horribly, I look at a guy on the 40 man roster who is said to be an elite defender and I wonder if there is much harm in bringing him up for a couple weeks if he understands that he's only expected to play his best defensive baseball for a short period of time.

If they did it, I think it would be a completely defensible move. But they do have to balance the 26 as well. Who do you send down or cut? How long is "a short period of time" given the ETA of Mondesi/Story?

Barring any setbacks, Arroyo and Duvall should be back this week. Guessing they replace Valdez and Duran so they can hold on to Reyes. Can use this is an opportunity to get Kike back to CF more; Duvall could be better served in LF/1B although things start to get a little complicated.

Small sample size applies, but Rafaela has played all of 66 innings at short this year (compared to 268 in CF). He's made 3 errors in 38 chances (.921). Not the worst but not great either. I don't think bringing him up from AA, even with a mandate to just field the position and not worry about his hitting, is the way to go with him. Not just because of how it might affect his development, but I don't think there'd be much of a net gain over trying Arroyo or giving Reyes more run there until Story or Chang returns.

Probably cut Reyes. I'm thinking short term until Arroyo or Chang returns with the start of that stint having been a week ago after Hernandez made 2 errors vs the Reds. Should his glove play be as advertised and he hits I would consider keeping him up longer and parting ways with Chang.

It's time to swap out Casas for Dalbec for a few weeks. Lineup is too LH right now, Bobby D is raking, and Casas needs some humble pie.

In regard to Dalbec, are the Sox pursuing a "Pavano & Rose" strategy of leaving him in the minors to put up glittering numbers with the goal of enticing another team to make a trade vs. the risk of calling him up and having him flame out in the bigs again?

If that's the case, let's hope that he brings back a Pavano-level haul instead of a Rose-style bucket of balls.

They are probably not bringing him up because they have a 99% certainty that he isn't going to cut it as a major leaguer no matter what numbers he puts up in AAA, and they still think Casas can work out his issues if given time. At his age and with his MLB track record, they aren't getting much of anything for Dalbec.

I'm not sure that the kid needs to be humbled, but he does need help figuring out how to get the bat on the ball more consistently. I love that he's willing to let bad pitches go and take walks, but I don't want a young player with his power to rely on that skill as a crutch as he struggles to find his stroke. He has the size and strength to be more of an offensive threat.

Casas has had a great series against Tampa (so generally some pretty good pitching): 2/8, 2B, 3B, 4 BB, 3 K, .250/.500/.625. Obviously, it's a tiny sample, but I've really loved seeing this version of him with more walks than Ks and LOUD contact. Both hits were scalded liners.

Thrilled to see him put get 2 XBHs and hopefully it gives him a lift. Baseball's a funny game. Both of those hits were catchable, them turning into some sort of catalyst would be nice.

Chance of this happening is pretty low. They have shown enough times that they are prioritizing development, and Casas is exactly where he needs to be to develop. Story and Duvall returning will solve the handedness concerns. It sucks that we keep waiting to see what this team can be, but hopefully not much longer.

If Mondesi is barely able to get through drills, he'd dead to me. I don't know if the FO screwed up evaluating his medicals, Mondesi is just a slow healer, or something else. It doesn't matter. At best, his return will be timed like Derek Smalls finally escaping the pod in Spinal Tap. Focus on Story.

Well, ACL is not like a science in terms of how long it will take to heal.

It's an interesting trade still - made in January (post Story), knowing he'd start on the 60-day IL. Taylor (entering Arb 2, $1M salary) for Mondesi ($3M and a FA next year) and Angel Pierre. https://www.milb.com/player/angel-pierre-800542

If Mondesi comes back this year, his upside is a plus defensive SS with speed. Something for the second half?
Taylor has an 8.15 ERA and is on the IL.
Pierre is just beginning.

(Edit- see below.)

I saw something where Cotillo was quoting Cora saying he's having trouble with the way he's healing, it's not balanced or something. Everyone's body is different I guess? Anyway, it sounds like it's still going to be some time.

Would have to be second half of the second half, at best, if he can currently barely get through drills?

Either way, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. It happens. They took a low risk shot and the chances of payoff look small at this point. It happens. Would you rather be on the hook for this or Carlos Rodon? But it does seem like a pretty big gap from "possibly ready by opening day" to "good days and bad days getting through basic drills" in early June.

Let me correct something I wrote above: They didn't think he'd start the season on the 60 day - they thought he would be ready shortly after opening day, but still viewed Hernandez as the primary.

“Our expectation is that he may be a little delayed to start the season, but Opening Day is still a possibility. And with an athlete like this, I wouldn't rule it out,” said Bloom.

Prior to the acquisition of Mondesi, Red Sox manager Alex Cora had said that Kiké Hernández would likely be the team’s primary shortstop.

Bloom said that is still the plan, especially as Mondesi battles back from his latest injury.

“We really liked the upside of this opportunity, thought it made sense,” said Bloom. “Whether he's on time or not, we're expecting him to contribute for the bulk of the year. But as far as how we look at our shortstop situation, it doesn't change anything about where we're headed and the opportunity in front of Kiké.

I'm with the "something else" on this. I had a golf/drinking buddy in Florida 30 years ago that played in the show. Made an all star team once. Lefty starter and signed his final contract with Boston and he told me he knew he was never going to pitch again when he signed a 3 year deal and just took the money and ran....laughed and said $%^%&# Them. Always hated the Sawx. I'm not saying Mondesi is like this but if he's getting paid not to play at his age.....something about his old man too....just a guy feeling. Someone "always" injured, hardly plays and has a contract. Am I over thinking?

1000%

Not exactly impressed with the implications of your "guy feeling" (I assume you mean gut?) either.

Thanks for proof reading. I failed typing class in HS. Just that Mondesi's history and those conversations way back makes me think this way. It is a business. There are those types.
Do you have any tips on how to read what's in someone's head when they don't tell you things? I'd love to get in on that.

Baseless speculation/projection seems to be working for you.

So many guys, when healthy, fake injury during the season before they hit the FA market. Because they have a contract. And they are those types.
I didn't see me saying many. I know of one for sure that was injured (and hid it) and signed a 3 year deal with Boston. But, you guys know everything. I should know better by now to add my 2 yen
