2023 Cowboys: Kellen Moore out as OC, McCarthy stuck in 1996

Figured it was time to start the 2023 Cowboys thread.

There’s been some significant shuffling since their close divisional round playoff loss at San Francisco this past January. The 2022 season was what most might call a “mixed success”. They went 12-5 despite missing Dak for 5 games. They won a road playoff game for the first time since the 1992 NFCCG. However, they still failed to advance beyond the divisional round.

1. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has been replaced by Brian Schottenheimer. In Jerryland, this has probably been the most controversial of all offseason moves. Moore was seen as a young and upcoming offensive mind and his offenses produced. His biggest internal criticism (much of it from McCarthy himself who inherited Moore) was he liked the no-huddle too much and it tired the defense out due to not giving them enough rest while the offense blitzed down the field quickly. But this claim was not backed by empirical evidence since the defense last year under Dan Quinn actually performed superior beyond 60 snaps than they did prior and were near the top of the league in that metric. Schottenheimer, in theory, will slow things down and run it a bit more though it is interesting that McCarthy will call the plays. I don’t like these moves much, though I suspect some of the change is being overplayed. If you are good at passing, that will tend to eventually come out in the playcalling. We shall see once the season starts.

2. Zeke out and Tony Pollard on the franchise tag. This one was no surprise as Zeke was way too expensive to keep for 2023 and Pollard had already surpassed him as the biggest play-maker out of the backfield even before last season. Cowboys also brought in Ronald Jones which is a move I really like. He’s still young (25 years old) and doesn’t have a ton of miles on him but has been very effective when he plays.

3. Signed Brandon Cooks. This is another solid move that gives the Cowboys a legit 3rd receiver that was missing last year after they lost Amari Cooper and Cedric Wilson after the 2021 season. Cooks also gives them some vertical threat which should help open up the middle more for CeeDee where he thrives the most and hopefully provides a bit more room for Michael Gallup who should be improved this year being another year removed from ACL surgery (he was only 9-10 months removed last year and didn’t quite have his quickness/cutting ability fully back

4. I won’t spend much time on the draft. Seemed to be a consensus “decent” draft…the main criticism being they reached a little on the first round on Mazi Smith (DT). But the Cowboys have largely drafted excellent the last 10 years or so…which has earned them benefit on claims of “reaching”. That wouldn’t have been true the previous 15 years when they drafted horrifically. But Will McClay and Stephen Jones have done an excellent job of taming Jerrah on draft day nowadays. Schoonmaker (TE 2nd round) and Overshown (LB 3rd round) were mostly considered good picks by the draft pundit class.

5. Patriots fans here will remember old friend Stephan Gilmore. Dallas traded for him from the Colts where most metrics had him as quite solid last year. He’s not the alpha CB he once was when he was arguably the best cover man in the league. But as a #2 or #3 CB, this is a really nice depth move…esp in the same division as the pass-heavy Eagles.

Overall, the team definitely got better on paper, but the coaching shakeup is a bit worrying on the offensive side. Esp coming off a year where they were near the top of the league in scoring despite Dak missing 5 games. Retaining Dan Quinn at DC was a huge plus though. That defense under him is pretty legit and his use of Micah Parsons all over the field has worked wonders.

My guess is this team will be pretty good again but the McCarthy factor always looms. His idea of “running the ball to give the defense some rest” is just bizarrely antiquated. You can run a controlled offense passing it too. That’s what teams like Buffalo, KC and Philly do. I’m not opposed to running it if it’s working, but doing it just because you want to milk more time off the clock sounds like something from 1996 when QBs had way lower completion percentages than they do now.

Probably the biggest obstacle for Dallas is the schedule (NFC East in general has gotten quite tough compared to recent years). They will have one of the hardest schedules in the NFL, though no sympathy expected from Patriots fans who are one of 3 teams with a harder schedule than Dallas.

I think it's Dallas or Philly in the NFC. SF is in the mix but I'm one of the seemingly few Purdy skeptics. Dallas looks strong on both sides of the ball and I agree with your overall assessment. Feels like a make-or-break year for McCarthy, and perhaps Dak too.

I agree that is definitely "feels" like Dallas and Philly are the two teams with the highest floor (barring major injuries of course) in the NFC....they feel the safest. If Purdy is real, then SF can be thrown in too, but I am sort of in your camp on Purdy. I don't think he's bad, but I want to see him replicate some of the success now that the league has had an offseason to study him.

I like Philly's coaching staff better than Dallas, which gives them an edge in my opinion. Dan Quinn is awesome for the Cowboys but McCarthy and the offensive side leave a lot to be desired. I will say this about McCarthy like I mentioned in the 2022 thread....he did have his team ready to play in both playoff games this past season. He had received a lot of criticism when the Cowboys seeminlgy came out totally flat in their 2021 wildcard round homefield loss to SF. But this past year, they were ready against both TB and SF despite losing the latter.

One of the biggest wildcards to me is the Giants. They just spent a lot of money on Daniel Jones. I've been a skeptic of the Giants for a while and thought they benefited from an easy schedule last year (they were swept by both the Cowboys and Eagles in the division), but if Jones is going to take a step forward, they could be real. He needs to take fewer sacks IMHO.

The one team I really have my eye on this year in the NFC is Detroit....they finished extremely strong and their young roster seems to be buying into Dan Campbell's (he's a Bill Parcells guy) philosophy. Goff had a really solid year last year too.

Detroit is interesting for sure. Will they take that next step and build off their 8-2 finish? I don't know man...it's still Detroit. I'm a skeptic until they prove it. I like Minnesota in the North. That defense has an opportunity to be a lot better and if so, I think they're pretty good. I don't understand why they're messing around with Dalvin Cook though.

The Giants. Meh. I guess they've improved this offseason but I really wasn't impressed with them last season. I do think they have the right GM/coach now so that's a massive step up for them but I don't expect them to be as good as last season.

The NFC looks a certain way now but as usual injuries will probably play a major role in who's around at the end.

How do you feel about the Cowboys offensive line? The suspected starters seem really good but there seems to be a pretty striking lack of depth. I'm not sure what to make of them...

Cowboys O-line is a little bit in limbo at the moment with the assumption that Tyron Smith is healthy. Tyler Smith (why do they need to have two O-linemen with almost identical names? lol) had an awesome rookie season moving from guard to left tackle to replace the injured Tyron Smith last year. When Tyron came back late in the season, they put him at right tackle where he is presumably expected to stay. The team seems to want to keep Tyler Smith at left tackle. This leaves Terence Steele out of his normal RT spot but he can also play guard where it sounds like they are trying to put him in on the left side opposite Zack Martin.

That leaves Josh Ball as the main backup. They drafted him as a tackle but he missed most of his rookie 2021 season with injury and they seem to like him as guard depth more than tackle. But luckily for the Cowboys, they have 3 guys who can play tackle, so my guess is if there is an injury to Tyron Smith again, they'll just move Terence Steele back out to RT and plug in Ball at left guard. They drafted Asim Richards in the 5th round, but he's not really expected to be ready for primetime this season. The other guys are Matt Farniok and Chuma Edoga and I agree those guys are not inspired depth pieces though Edoga might have a little more pedigree being a 3rd round draft pick a few years ago with the Jets.

The cliff's notes version is the Cowboys can probably quite easily handle one injury to the O-line but then it gets dicey quickly if they lose 2. If any of the guys behind Ball has to play, my guess is the one most likely to make a leap is Edoga as his build is pretty ideal for guard.

Peters was surprisingly effective last year but so far they haven't resigned him. The Cowboys said they would like to have him back a couple months ago, but I think the ball is in Peters' court. He hasn't decided if he's going to play another season.

He might be the type who signs in July or August at his age. If he does, that would alleviate some of the depth concerns since he can competently play both tackle and guard.

It wouldn’t be the Cowboys without some sort of drama and this summer hasn’t disappointed…Zack Martin is now in his second week of holding out and has accumulated 600k in fines. Jerry Jones hasn’t budged on a new contract. (Martin signed a 6 year/84M extension in 2018 that covers the 2019-24 seasons)

But this is a problem given Martin is probably the best guard in the NFL…or at the very least, top 3 if he isn’t the best. If his holdout goes into the season, then that obviously affects the offense in a big way.

Very interesting. So Dallas will have a decision to make on a $20M+ fifth year option after this season. I can't see how they exercise that without them moving on from Dak (who has a $55M cap number next season). If they don't exercise it they'll still have Trey for 2024 but he'll be a free agent the year after (like the Raiders and Jacobs last season), and if he sees the field and does well you're looking at tagging him or a big contract.

I don't know if there's a tea leaf in here or not but it seems that Dak needs to perform this season or be gone.

Barring some kind of injury to Dak I don't think they exercise Lance's fifth year option. They could always offer a different deal if they want to make this a longer than two year engagement.

I don't know why a team like ATL didn't try harder for Lance.

Yeah I’m not totally sure what the Cowboys plan is here but if you squint you can see it. I suppose they are viewing it from a cost-benefit perspective in that it’s only costing them a 4th round pick to see if this kid can become an elite QB. He certainly has the raw tools. They’ll see how well he picks up the offensive system in practice and then maybe determine if they want to go further and extend his time in Dallas.

This does put some pressure on Dak I think to perform if he’s going to stay in Dallas beyond 2024. Dak has two years left on his contract. He’s going to be 31 in 2024 so you can sort of see where Dallas might be going here. Trying to groom Lance to take over in 2025 (again, assuming they think he’s starter material after his first couple years on the bench).

Want some low brow shit?

Deadspin has a report that Jerry Jones didn't tell Mike McCarthy that he was trading for Trey Lance. He just did it. Is the report accurate? No clue but who cares.

I know, wrong thread. But a total Jerry move and tangentially related to the Eagles.

Apparently Jerry himself told a radio station that he made the trade in 5 minutes without consulting anyone because he'd already done the work on Lance and that's the beauty of being both owner and GM, lol.

I honestly wondered how that all went down. Can you imagine being the HC (or QB coach, or O-Coordinator, or really anyone who might have to be in a room with Dak Prescott that day?) and coming in to that news ice cold the morning it happened?

Just one game, but it certainly looked like the defense took another step up from last year’s good performance. That was as dominant as a performance as you’ll ever see from a defense in modern day NFL

Micah Parsons looks basically unblockable one on one so the Giants double teamed him a lot and it opened up a lot of opportunities for the rest of the Dline which is already really deep beyond Parsons. Guys like DeMarcus Lawrence and Dorance Armstrong and Osa Odighizuwa were all over Daniel Jones last night.

The secondary with Gilmore opposite Diggs looked excellent too but the real test will be when the Cowboys don’t have as great a game pass rushing as they did tonight. Any secondary probably looks good when the opposing QB is already hearing footsteps the instant he drops back. Still, Gilmore and Diggs were directly responsible for two turnovers.

The offense was hard to judge on a rainy night where most of their possessions were when the game was already out of hand, but they seemed to move the ball well enough.Their execution looked a little bit sloppy at times, but again, hard to judge in the rain during a blowout. Their best drive was probably to open the 2nd half when they fairly easily drove for a TD to put the nail in the coffin at 33-0.

This is clearly a playoff team and potentially a very good one. In the end, you just get the feeling that, once again, their fate will rest on Dak’s shoulders. He needs to level up one of these years come playoff time.

Yep, this is a huge season for Dak. And I say that as a Dak Truther. He's proven to be a good regular season QB (62-36 career record as a starter with good stats to back it up) that gets his teams to the playoffs. But fairly or unfairly, all good QBs eventually get judged on what they do in the playoffs and he hasn't had that big playoff run yet. He had the great game against TB, but then followed it up with a bad game that likely cost them against the 49ers (the defense played admirably in that game).

Dak actually played very well in the 2018 playoffs winning one game and losing by a TD to the Rams in the divisional round but he played well in the loss. But that was the inexplicable game where the defense morphed into the worst run defense of all time. But again, fairly or unfairly, you need to win and you need that one feature game where you carry your team when the defense isn't doing it or running game isn't doing it and he really hasn't had that type of game in the playoffs yet (you could argue maybe the 2016 divisional round game against GB was close, but he didn't win).

I think that is one reason they took a flier on Trey Lance. Barring some major injury and getting Wally Pipped, Dak is the starting QB through next season, but the defensive core is quite young, so if Dak doesn't prove it by end of 2024 season and it looks like Lance might be real, there's a legit chance they don't extend Dak and give Lance a shot with that core.

This team has all the talent in the world but they will be undone by one of Dak or McCarthy (or both).
My guess is McCarthy

You can almost see a collision course with the 49ers again. SF/DAL NFCCG would be classic…throwback to the 1990s.

Dallas is in a nasty division though. I think the Cowboys might be better than the Eagles this year but I’ll give it another 4-6 weeks to shake out. Easy to overreact to week 1 drama and Philly has the coaching edge IMHO which I don’t want to discount too much. Plus, injuries are always a big part of the season in NFL.

Cowboys looked dominant again yesterday but the caveat is that it was against Zach Wilson. It would have been interesting to see what the defense looked like against Aaron Rodgers.

Still, the offense and Dak had no major problems moving the ball against a very good Jets defense which was one the questions coming into the game. That opening TD drive was surgical against that defense which was still fresh. They probably wore down throughout the game since the Jets offense couldn’t sustain any drives, but it was still a solid performance by the offense.

They didn’t have a great red zone performance yesterday but on many of those possessions they weren’t even really trying that hard since the game was basically wrapped up. They ran it on 3rd and medium a couple red zone possessions in a row in the 2nd half and took the FG.

Schedule coming up is:
@ARI
vs NE
@SF

A lot of people are circling that SF Sunday night game. Could be a doozy.

Dallas defense has looked really fast and strong in the first couple of weeks. A lot can change in a couple of weeks, but it seems like a significant mismatch against the NE offensive line.

Hey another season over before October!
Don’t think this is a killer at all. They’ve got Gilmore out there, and, honestly, Diggs was more opportunistic than a true shutdown corner that a defense is built around. He’s a valuable, good player, and his playmaking ability was a legitimate value-add in their defense, but this isn’t Sauce Gardner going down.

Always felt like more of an Asante Samuel to me. Gambler who makes big plays but who can be too aggressive and give up chunk plays. But, this is a team that is going to have to contend with Philly and SF down the road come playoff time so losing a guy of Diggs’ talent certainly hurts in the matchup game.

Yep. This defense was starting to look extremely scary once they added Gilmore, but without Diggs, it’s now just merely good? And that could be the difference between shutting down an Eagles or 49ers offense or not. This was supposed to be the season where Dak didn’t have to try and carry them, but now it may end up that way after all.

Wow, that is absolutely brutal. Wonder if Jerry works the trade market now.
I think he will be active. It's a weak year in the NFC, so it's a good GFIN opportunity. And there are quite a few bad teams that are in no position to compete. It may even end up as a net positive this year, given Diggs own shortcomings and inconsistency.

Diggs can definitely give up the big play sometimes, but his ball hawking skills more than offset it and QBs tend shy away from him because of that. I think Dallas still has a good secondary even without him, but now the depth gets tested. They can't really afford another CB injury and it's only week 3....that's where the biggest danger lies.
If the rest of them stay healthy, then I think they don't see a huge downtick in performance, but that is a big if when you're only a couple games into a long season. Getting Jordan Lewis back right before Diggs went down was actually huge since he was one of the best slot corners in the league prior to going down last year. DaRon Bland had a breakout rookie year last year as CB too with 5 INTs....so he's gonna get a chance to play even more now.

They will need their pass rush to remain dominant as well....we all know a great pass rush can cover up any weaknesses in the secondary. But it's still a bummer to see Diggs go down. You had the feeling that this defense was morphing into something pretty special with Gilmore on the opposite side and the young pass rushers taking another step so far this season.

I mean, small sample size, but his passer rating when targeted was .1 and had an INT and forced fumble in the first two games. Losing him for the season sucks.

Their pass rush is unreal without having to blitz. That will help paper over the loss of Diggs for the season. They have a lot of depth on the defensive line so they can rotate guys in an out to keep them fresh during the game. Also, Micah Parsons. Parson's first sack of Wilson last week was less than 2 seconds after the snap. Less time, less time for people to get open. All of that said, 17 games is a long time. There will be other injuries and people get tired and worn down by the end of the regular season. If the D-line wears down or more injuries happen, Diggs' loss will definitely be magnified.

This article touched on Dak’s performance so far…

I’m not ready to sing too many praises after just 2 weeks, but one thing overshadowed by the defensive performance so far has been Mike McCarthy’s new offensive game plan with Dak Prescott. Dak has played near-mistake free football so far and as much as I’ve shat on McCarthy, if this keeps up, he deserves a chunk of the credit. The only truly terrible mistake I can recall was when he nearly threw a pick-6 to Sauce in the Jets game that was dropped.

If Dak can continue to play with very few unforced errors, the team will be as hard to beat as anyone. But I want to wait until we get another 6-8 weeks under our belt before really being convinces McCarthy’s plan has worked.

Cowboys are always utterly brutal in Arizona. Not sure what’s in the water there but what a pathetic performance all the way around except maybe the running game.

Its amazing how bad the rushing defense was against a team that can’t pass it well.

I have no idea what to think of this Dallas team.
The Diggs injury and this game has brought me back to the same opinion of Dallas as the last couple years. A likely playoff team that isn’t good enough to beat a team like the 49ers…we’ll see how good the Eagles are this year but they might be 2nd fiddle to them in the NFC East again too.

Hundreds and hundreds of miles of desert are in those disgusting resevoirs. Only place I've lived where I didn't drink the tap water.

They're complete frauds like every season since Super Bowl 30 and there's zero reason for the Prescott-McCarthy era to continue. McCarthy is a horrible coach and a worse playcaller/OC and Dak isn't worth keeping for the lack of production and his limitations. He can be cut post June 1 in the offseason for a substantial discount.

Belichick and Mac for Dak. Get it done, Theo. Jokes aside, this Cowboys teams isn’t as good as they looked last week or as bad as they look this week. But, they do look to be a clear level below the Eagles and Niners. We’ll see if Jerry is active in the trade market. Problem is nothing really matters when Dak plays as poorly as he has tonight.

I mean can we trade BB to Jerry world for 3 firsts?

We get the firsts, BB poisons Jerry three weeks in. It's a win win.
