That’s fair. Especially with the news that multiple starters will be on pitch counts / innings limits, that could increase the chances for a potential long man like Crawford / Winckowski at the expense of someone like Mills.

Green is likely bullpen with a short week until opening day. Red is traded/released/claimed, but basically not in the org. anymore. Italics are IL or some other role (including minors).

Hmm, guess I miscounted, didn’t realize they had one more spot up for grabs. Now I have no clue how they are getting Tapia, never mind Alfaro, on the 40, since it seems like Ort’s spot will be taken by him or one of the other non roster pitchers.

Yeah, Joely's injury handcuffs them a bit, but I think trading Dalbec, getting rid of Ort & letting Alfaro walk if he wants to, while elevating Tapia + Sherriff makes the most sense.

Unless they have an injury or 2 which warrant 60-day list.

Unless they make a trade, the candidates are Sherriff or Mosqueda. Or, Ort. None are really compelling options.

Wonder if they’d have any interest in swinging a deal to bring Josh Taylor back. Probably not.

If Taylor can't make the cut on a team that has a major league bar of JBJ, I'm pretty sure we don't want him back.

Roster wise- assuming this saves Ort for a bit. Bello can come up, and whomever gets bumped down to the pen replaces Kelly. Otherwise, there are no other relievers on the 40-man and Mills and Rodriguez don’t seem close to being activated. Could be an opportunity to get Alfaro on the roster if they put Kelly on the 60 and send Wong down?

Kelly already went through ligament reattachment surgery in 2020, so this could be very serious.

The pen has been mostly good and I have to say that Winckowski's turnaround has been amazing. One thing that has me slightly concerned is that if Cora keeps both him and Crawford as sort of designated long/bulk guys we're likely to see more of Ort and Brasier in situations that we might rather they not be in.

Maybe, although Crawford got the 7th and 8th in a nail biter last night.

Starting to wonder what actually needs to happen for Ort and Tilt to be sent packing. The number of chances they both get are just amazing. WHIPs of 1.78 and 1.50 respectively with no recent examples of actual MLB mediocrity, let alone success.

At what point is their continued existence on the roster nothing more than someone refusing to admit they were wrong?

When guys like Joely Rodriguez, Martin, and Paxton come off the IL Right now there's no one else on the 40 to take Ort's spot in the bullpen. The moment that any of them are ready to be activated, Ort needs to be sent packing. He still has options IIRC (ujnlike Brasier) so that should be an easy call.

Both Barnes and Ward have better ERAs and FIPs than Ort and Brasier. At least we got Bleier back for Barney’s whose FIP and xFIP are acceptable.

Brasier's had an odd year. He allowed runs in four games and he entered:
Down by 3
Up by 12
Down by 5
Up by 8
In his mid to high leverage usage, he's been very good. It's not like he's cost them any games.
He also leads the AL in appearances, fwiw.

Not that it necessarily means he's pitched well, or that it's any indication of future performance, since all the appearances count, but his WPA fits in with this as well, as he's a positive .2 wins, largely fueled by his 1-2-3 save in the 1 run win over the Angels.

The sample sizes are pretty tiny. Brasier has faced 10 batters in situations Fangraphs describes as medium or high leverage. Hitters are 0-9 with a walk.

In low leverage situations, he's faced 51 batters & they're slashing .318/.412/.455.

Will be nice when they have enough other stuff going on to be able to move on from Ort & then Brasier.

Does Bernardino have any options left? Perhaps he gets Orts slot when guys start coming off the IL.

Just checked, it looks like he has 2 remaining options.

Unless they implode I don't think you option Houck, Whitlock, Crawford, Winckowski, or Schreiber. Which is another way of saying Ort and Bernardino are the fungible pitchers. Martin will (thankfully) take a bullpen spot from Ort or Bernardino, with Rodriguez taking the second. And then health forces two potentially odd decisions.

#1 - I don't think you can't use Bello this year if he's pitching well at AAA. (Maybe a spot will open in the rotation due to injury or something.)

#2 - Same for Paxton - who is not doing so well in AAA right now. But Paxton, IIRC is on a rehab clock with a ML contract.

Please don't let Brasier or Bleier ever pitch again. Brasier is just too inconsistent to trust and Bleier needs to go as soon as a lefty gets healthy.

If Joely Rodriguez is the next to come off the IL, I'd think he takes Bleier's spot, or Bernardino's. Don't need three leftys in the pen unless they're lights-out.
