Cornet was really pissed the roof closed in the middle of her service game. The first few points it was happening it seemed neither player even noticed it was closing. They Coronet caught attention of it, and it completely distracted her mentally.

She drops her serve, is visibly pissed, and hits the ball in her hand towards the net where there is a ball kid running across. ESPN showed it a second time and made some comments, but didn't obsess on it. I think maybe the ref didn't see it, as it probably deserved at least a warning if it was seen. I'll admit I was doing other things while watching so I didn't get a great look at it
Thx, appreciate the context!

Ok, she looks like a legit contender now, and she's moving better today than she did on Monday somehow. Kontaveit playing well, too. Highly competitive.

Serena's returns are remarkable atm.

Takes the first in a tiebreak!

Broken immediately in the second, however.

Two breaks now...

Kontaveit really going for return winners on every return point. It's like the men facing Isner - if you make your shot, he lacks the agility to get there off a serve, but you probably can't get around his serve a high % enough of the time to make it count.

Well, after losing the 2nd set decisively, Serena took a break off the court, either relieving herself or taking a reset on the psyche, or a little of both.

And, verily, here comes Serena's patented shifting to 5th gear, where she somehow dials up the focus and accuracy and intensity and most opponents just can't hang. Some amazing returns here going for the early break.

I need a GIF of Alexis Ohanian standing up and yelling FUCK YEAH at his wife in a dead stare, as she icily walks to the other court after breaking Kontaveit.

edit: holy shit 117mph down the tee.

This crowd has been great for both her matches.

This is special stuff.
Fully agreed, but also I think ESPN is overdoing it with the sound mix to make it seem even crazier. The ‘out’ calls are super loud sometimes, it’s annoying.

Thanks. Are those voice simulated calls or does the chair make the calls upon notification?

I should google.

Pretty cool. I've definitely heard both male and female simulated voices so that's why I asked.

All tourneys should have these.

I don't think the Hawkeye technology works on clay courts yet for some reason - but there, at least the umpire can get out of the chair and inspect a mark if necessary. But otherwise, yes, I think we're going to see many more tournaments go down this road, at least on featured courts and assuming money is not an issue in installing the system.

I heard during Roland Garros this year it's because the lines move. The computer doesn't actually see the lines and assumes they are a permanent unmovable fixture (if the ball touches this part of the court it is always out). But on clay courts the line is just nailed down, so it can move between tournaments or perhaps even between matches.

#2, #3, and #4 seed all out before the third round on the women’s side, it’s really Swiatek and everyone else these days.

Coco and Pegula upset in the first round of doubles (they were the #2 seed) but that will allow them to focus on singles (both still in).

Williams sisters out quickly as well.

Fognini / Nadal is quite a match so far, although not well played. Second set starts with 5 straight breaks of serve, before Fognini can finally consolidate the break. He won the first set easily. Rafa has played like shit so far through 14 games

And now fognini's level of play has dropped into the toilet and we are back on serve.

Yep, that was where it turned, Fognini won 10 of the first 14 games, then it was Nadal 16-3 after that.

Tomijanovic is hanging tough and appears to be drawing energy from the entire crowd being against her. She wouldn’t stand a chance against Serena of 10 years ago, but she’s pushing her now and making this a compelling match.

Here
Serena got gassed end of first and fell apart. That doubles match was a mistake it seems.

Breaks early 2nd, though!

Serena starts the third with a break, but the first two sets have followed the same pattern, Serena gets ahead and Tomljanovic comes back hard at her.

Serena needs to find some more of those aces and shorten some of these points.
