I kind of love Kyrgios, because of course I do.

#11 Fritz is the highest seed left in Nadal’s half of the draw.

20 year old American Brandon Nakashima path to an unlikely SF appearance is potentially two Australians in Kyrgios and then de Minaur.

Still stunned to see 4 American men into the 4th round with good chance go further. Just shows you how pathetic American tennis has been this century.

Your Djokovic love is absolutely disgraceful, but I'm with you on this one. I can't help it, I like Kyrgios. Yes, it's frustrating that he doesn't put 100% of his energy and focus into tennis, and if he did he could be incredible, and sometimes he acts like an idiot. But he's fun to watch, and I enjoy rooting for him to climb the mountain and put it all together for two weeks. And I like the way he pisses off people like McEnroe, as well as how he openly thinks Djokovic is an asshole.

And I have always wanted guys to serve underhanded occasionally when the opponent is a billion feet behind the baseline, love that.

I am a tennis guy but can’t answer my own following question:

growing up watching Wimbledon, everyone and I mean everyone served and volleyed.
Agassi was the first one to stay on the baseline but it was a trend that didn’t catch on.

The consensus was the ball bounces so unpredictably in grass that you couldn’t afford to stay back.
Now everyone, like 100% serves and stays back.
What is the rational behind the full scale change.

The courts and balls are slower is a lot of it, I think.

Tiafoe was just ousted by David Goffin in 5 set. He blew a 2 sets to 1 lead and blew a 15-40 tied at 5-5 and then choked on his serve.

Big Foe left it all out there today. Was down 1-5 in the 4th. Actually, broke Goffin’s serve twice to get it back on serve at 4-5, but Goffin closed out the set by breaking Tiafoe’s serve.

Choked is a little harsh. Goffin had two brilliant points in a row where he saved what looked first to be a forehand and then a service winner.

'Choked' is always perception, but I also thought Tiafoe had lots of chances in the last set-plus and played a lot of bad points on crucial points. He fought back from 1-5 to 4-5 in the 4th set and then blew his service game, very frustrating to watch.

Awesome third set tiebreak between Sinner and Alcaraz, Alcaraz fights off some match points and takes it 10-8 to stay alive.

I'm going to feel for Sinner if he goes on to lose this match - he's starting to play some pretty nervy points. But yeah, great tiebreak.
Yeah, he had a match point on his serve in that tiebreak (up 7-6?) and missed the first serve by like five feet.

I've been watching a decent amount of De Minaur v Garin today; Garin came back from two sets down, and he's actually just saved two match points serving at 4-5 in the fifth. On the second of them, De Minaur dove across the grass to try and retrieve a forehand, and when he got up he'd ripped one of his fingers open, and it's bleeding pretty badly. So Garin now has to wait for the MTO to finish before serving at Deuce, still potentially two points away from losing the match. Unfortunate timing!

1st Grand Slam QF for Kyrgios since the 2015 Australian Open.

First grand slam QF for Taylor Fritz though he’s likely going to have the pleasure of facing Nadal for a spot in the SF.

I was thinking about Kyrgios more this evening and was wondering whether I'd commentated on him before - turns out that I had, when he was playing at Indian Wells in 2019. But it was a doubles match of his I'd called, and I now I remember how much he'd said he enjoys doubles in no small part because he's part of a team and doesn't have only his own thoughts to occupy his brain during matches. Makes a lot of sense, when you think about it.

(FWIW, his doubles partner in that match I'd called? Taylor Fritz, who could be his semifinal opponent if he beats Garin and Fritz beats Nadal.)

Yeah, terrible set from Novak, very curious to see if he can turn it around.

Novak badly outmatched so far, dunno if it is mental or physical but it is lopsided so far, after a tight first few games in set 1 from Sinner.

Djokovic was up 4-1, 11-3 since then for Sinner.

More double faults than aces for Novak so far, yowza.

He still has to hold twice, but all hope feels lost. Evil triumphs yet again. One day we will be free of this douchebag. But not today.
