Wow, I haven’t really looked at the draw, Krygios/Medvedev tomorrow in the night session.

Hilarious scoreline.

Madison Brengle defeats Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 0-6, 5-0.

Winners
Yastremska 31
Brengle 1

That can’t be real.

Also, tennis is ridiculous for betting. Because Yastremska retired, if your book voids a bet if a match ends due to a retirement, Yastremska bettors get a refund when it should have been a L.
Very few sports books require full match to be completed. For WTA (3 sets), every one that Ive used requires two full sets to be competed for sides action.

Good to know. William Hill is in the minority then voiding bets when there is a retirement or DQ.

Tennis is one of the more tricky ones as rules vary by sports book. The ones I use have two set rule but I’ve heard of others with one set and even first ball (match starts it’s official). If you can find one with the latter and have injury info that can be particularly valuable.

12 double faults in 4 service games in a 1-6 first set loss for Sabalenka. It was honestly quite difficult to watch.
She's gotten her shit together in the second set

EDIT--she still doesn't have much touch, so she's been pounding her second serve. Just got a second serve ace. Having said that, Wang is playing her really tough.

Nice little comeback by Sebastian Baez from 5-3 down in the 2nd set tiebreak against Tsitsipas to make it one set all. (Baez' grand slam debut this week.)

Btw, Eurosport is showing the Australian Open in the UK, and I've just been reminded again of the silliest show title in sports television - their recap show featuring Mats Wilander and Barbara Schett is called "Game, Schett and Mats", and I'm at least half-convinced they only paired those two together to make the pun possible.

Yeah, we almost had three of the top six women's seeds all go out within a few hours, but Sabalenka pulled it together.

Excited for Krygios/Medvedev in an hour or so, hopefully Nick brings his A game if that even still exists.

It won’t be a dull match, that’s for sure!

It looks like ESPN is not even airing this through my cable channels, nice to pay for the rights to not air matches like this.

ESPN2 went off the air a little while ago with very good matches still going, Andy Murray in the early stages for one. It doesn't look like either channel plans to pick it back up for the night session at 3 AM EST, ugh.

The Tennis Channel ironically airing Murray vs Tsitsipas from last year's US Open, while both are playing live matches. Well done all around.

ESPN2 airing a repeat of tonight's admittedly great Clippers/Nuggets game over live Medvedev/Krygios, while leaving the final score of the hoops up as part of the ticker underneath.

That's ridiculous.

Taro Daniel is off to a very bright start against Murray - up a set and a break. (Fun fact: Daniel played in the first tennis match I ever called as a commentator, at Indian Wells in 2018.) We don't get Kyrgios-Medvedev on UK TV here, FWIW...or at least not yet, as we have Murray on Eurosport 1 and Raducanu on Eurosport 2.

Plus FAA maybe heading for a fourth straight tiebreak, I was fucking pumped for this time slot since yesterday.

OK I remembered I actually pay for this already as part of ESPN Insider, would way rather watch on my TV than my phone but it’s something.

Krygios playing great since I found the feed, from 4-2 down in the 1st to up 5-4 on serve, great atmosphere and intensity.

Yikes, Krygios had bad Covid just a week ago, he really needed that first set to have any chance but Medvedev dominated the tiebreak, 7 straight points after Nick went up 1-0. He first tested positive Jan 10:

Nick Kyrgios says his recent bout of COVID-19 "hit me pretty hard." "I was training five hours a day, feeling extraordinary, and then it hit me and I was bedridden. Couldn't really breathe well. Coughing," the 26-year-old Australian said after a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over qualifier Liam Broady in the first round at Melbourne Park. "I was pretty bad. Like, for someone that you assume is in the peak of his physicality, I got hit pretty bad."”

JA, you don't have a Roku or a smart TV? ESPN+ is definitely the way to go for watching slams. You get to pick whichever match you're interested in and won't get pulled away because ESPN wants to show some fluff or commercials. Sometimes there's no commentators but I don't mind that.

No, I have regular cable and never stream anything. I need to see if I can get ESPN+ connected to my TV today though, because phone ain’t cutting it.

ESPN+ doesn't have commercials? They shoehorn commercials to the remnants they leave for ESPN3

I don't think the poster meant they don't have commercials. They meant that you won't miss any of the action because of commercials. If you're just watching on ESPN/ESPN2 the last week, you would notice that they're showing the matches in segments. Maybe 3 games of one match, 3 of another, Brad Gilbert and James Blake then talking in the studio, etc. Watching it on ESPN+ you will just get 100% the match (with commercials at the change overs).

With that said, last night was a clutsterfuck on ESPN+. Was unable to watch the Tiafoe/Fritz match anywhere. ESPN wasn't playing it and it wasn't showing up on ESPN+.

Correct, you will never get taken to a commercial break and miss action as a result. But there are also some feeds, probably the smallest of the side courts, where you get no commentators and no commercials on changeovers most of the time - that's what I had the other night watching Korda. Just long shots of the players sitting there, doing whatever they do. Sometimes it can be pretty interesting to watch.

I see. That's been my experience with the ESPN3 feeds for Wimbledon and US Open. It makes sense for ESPN to put more of that on ESPN+.

Has anyone been following through the encores on Tennis Channel in the morning and ESPN2 in the afternoons? Do they split up the matches they feature amongst themselves?

Between the Djokovic thing (completely his fault, but you all know I have rooted for him for a long time before he went fully Kyrie) and the decision of ESPN to seemingly not air the night session for most of the tournament, I think I am mostly out on this tournament, which is a shame because it is one of my favorite sporting events every year.

Dude. Come on. I know you're our resident Djokovic fan, which kills me because it just makes Yankee fans look bad, but is he the only reason you watch tennis? When it comes to the broadcast, I agree, it sucks that apparently ESPN+ has become a requirement. If you don't have a smart TV, get a Roku and you should be all set.

Yes, that's the rational response, but my irrational response is just 'fine, fuck you, I will spend my time doing other things.' Maybe I will change my mind sometime, that's where I am right now.

Berrettini and Alcaraz going to a 5th set tiebreak, the kid trying to come back from 2 sets down. Would be quite the escape for Alcaraz... :)

Anisimova with a really impressive win over Osaka, 10-5 in the final set tiebreak. She plays Barty next, they played in the French Open semis in 2019 when Anisimova was just 17, she won the first set but couldn't finish, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Barty went on to her first Grand Slam title.

All four American women who made the 3rd round are through to octos. All will be facing a higher seed in their next match. Anisimova (Barty), Pegula (Sakkari), and Keys (Badosa) have the toughest matches, Collins (Mertens) has a little more manageable opponent.

Taylor Fritz and Max Cressey are the only American men still alive, both to play tonight/this morning in the 3rd round. Fritz has Batista-Agut, Cressey has Christopher O'Connell (not a name I recognize) who beat Schwartzman last round.

Sabalenka and Vondrousova are wearing the exact same outfit. This is a pet peeve of mine. Do better, Nike — I shouldn’t have to expend mental energy to keep track of which player is which.

Yeah, my wife and I always complain about this too (to each other), they can't have two outfit choices for their people in a tournament? Inexplicable.

Fritz with a big breakthrough in his career, into a Grand Slam round of 16 for the first time after previously being 0-7 in third rounds, after an impressive seesaw five set win over #15 Bautista-Agut.

The first top man goes down, #5 Rublev, impressive effort from #27 Cilic. This is Medvedev’s section of the draw, Cilic now gets #9 FAA and the winner probably meets Medvedev in the quarters.

And Cressy is also through to the octos with a four-set win over O'Connell. He gets Medvedev next. Fritz gets Tsitsipas next.

they've relegated ESPN3 to show the Junior Boys courts and wheelchair, and nothing from the main draw....
ESPN2 came on at 9, I believe, I'm watching football.

Also you all will be thrilled to know I got a Roku today (thanks again for the push @cromulence) and so I'm I think all set for the rest of this tournament.
