If you’re going to throw in front of the sticks on third and 17, you really need to make the catch far enough down field to get in field goal range. If not you might as well throw a home run ball and either catch it, draw a penalty, or have them intercept it in the end zone.

I thought rule of thumb was set up at the 10, if it’s over your head let it go. I can’t see the reason he FC it at the five.

it used to be that the punt returner would put his feet on the ten yard line, and if it was being kicked over his head he would let it go. Punters have gotten so good dropping the ball inside the five that the returners normally set up on the seven now, but once they decide to catch it they may drift back a few yards.
