Yawn. Probably.

First big team event post-LIV. Thursday-Sunday at Quail Hollow in NC. The format is a little different than the Ryder Cup. The team session have 5 matches each as opposed to 4. They also spread it out a little with one session on Thursday and Friday, then a double dip on Saturday prior to Sunday singles.

The US is a huge favorite, the most recent money line I saw was -700. This is always a rough go for the Internationals, especially on US soil, but LIV decimated them.

Team USA (Davis Love III captain)

Scottie Scheffler
Justin Thomas
Jordan Spieth
Collin Morikawa
Patrick Cantlay
Xander Schauffele
Max Homa
Kevin Kisner
Cam Young
Billy Horschel
Tony Finau
Sam Burns

Team International (Trevor Immelman captain)

Hideki Matsuyama
Sungjae Im
Tom Kim
Corey Connors
Adam Scott
Mito Pereira
MacKenzie Hughes
KH Lee
Erik Van Rooyan
Adam Hadwin
Ryan Fox
Sebastian Munoz

They lost Smith, Niemann, Ancer, Oosthuizen and perhaps Leish to LIV. Probably won't make a huge difference in the outcome, but that really sucks.

In 2019 down in Australia the US rallied in singles to win 16-14. The last PC played in the US was 2017 and it was a slaugter, the US was half a point away from clinching the Cup on Saturday. The final was 19-11.

Hard to get super pumped for this but maybe it'll provide a little excitement.

6 shots, 2 commercial breaks.

8 shots, 3 commercial breaks.

Nobody hates golf more than the Golf Channel/NBC.

I'm pulling for the Internationals to keep this close and entertaining, but I must say this has to be one of the most likeable US squads in a long time.

X and Cantlay dust Hideki and Scott, 6&4.

US up in the other 4 matches, though the largest lead is 2 up. 3 matches are 1 up, so if the Internationals can flip 2 of those they may get out of here in relatively good shape.

You need 15.5 points to win, so the earliest they could wrap it up is Saturday afternoon. The US almost pulled it off in 2017 at Liberty National. It was 14.5 - 3.5 headed into singles.

I am still processing that the last time the President's Cup happened, it was December 2019. It's been 3 lifetimes packed into those 3 years.

Tiger Woods was their best player that time too.

A lot has happened since then.
A lot. Rickie Fowler was on that President's Cup team. Jordan Spieth wasn't. Plus, obviously, everything else that has happened. Covid, politics, inflation, etc.

Man.

Cam Davis and Si Woo Kim snatch one from Scheffler and Burns to get the Internationals on the board.

A little mo here for the Internationals. Max/Finau tied with Mito/Pendrith but Mito just snap hooked one off 18.

Edit: The routing takes some getting used to. With Quail a regular Tour stop, I always remember 18 as the hole with the creek up the left side. They made that 15 for this thing though.

Tough 18th for Mito, hooked one off the tee and then hits a pedestrian greenside bunker shot. Pendrith can't make a 10 footer for the tie. Max/Tony win 1up.

4-1 session for the Internationals. Fourball tomorrow morning.

Did they do this for the sole purpose of making all the par 3's even numbered holes, giving advantages to great iron players like Morikawa? I'd be curious to hear what else went into that decision, as I've always thought original 18, now 15 was an excellent finishing hole.

I'm not sure. My thought was they wanted to get that hole played more so they moved it up.

They mentioned yesterday on the broadcast that the rerouting was an acknowledgement that most matches don’t play the entire course. So they moved up the toughest stretch of holes (“the green mile”) to ensure they played a part in most of the matches.

So far 9 of the 10 matches have been close, but the Internationals just can't get a lead and get any momentum. They've led for a total of 4 holes thus far. It's been a slow bleed of 1 down, 2 down, etc.

Man, Im chips in for birdie on 14 and drains a 33 footer for bird on 15 and can’t do better than halve both holes.

A sweep is looking likely.

Edit: Looking at the card, Munoz and Im have made 5 birdies in a row but only won 1 hole.

Internationals split morning foursomes so the US can’t officially clinch today. I think this has actually been a lot closer than 10-4 would indicate.

Spieth down 2 after 2. He's been great this entire event but not a good start against a guy who is RED hot.

Spieth is already 2-down. One of the more bizarre stats is he’s never won a singles match in either Cup.
