We are looking at a historically bad defensive team this year in the Phillies, hoping to outscore their mistakes, but either way the rest of us are going to be very entertained.

“Other than the outfield, this is mostly the same Phillies lineup that Sports Info Solutions has calculated as the worst defensive team last year. The Phillies’ minus-54 score in SIS’s Defensive Runs Saved metric ranked last in the major leagues. But that isn’t even the most worrisome part.

The part that should really frighten them is that they were at least 86 runs worse, in that runs-saved category, than any of the five NL playoff teams. “

“ But now, here comes Schwarber — who graded out at minus-4 DRS in 87 games in left field last season. And also, here comes Castellanos — whose minus-39 DRS over the past four seasons rank last among all 110 major-league outfielders who appeared in at least 150 games.”

This team has been up and down to the extreme all season.

After a 3-1 start, they went 1-7.

Then they went 7-3 in their next 10, followed by 2-6 in their next 8.

Then, after blowing their 2nd 7-1 late-inning lead in 7 games, they win the first 3 games in LA (before the bullpen blows the sweep.)

They then lose 11 of their next 15 games before firing Girardi and sweeping the Angels. They're still 5 games below .500.

All the problems with the bullpen and the beer league softball defense have been well-covered. And it's going to be worse with Harper not able to play the OF and Segura out for 3 months.

If you like manic mediocrity, this is the team for you.

Phillies hit 2 home runs off Hader in the 9th to take a 3-2 lead. Phillies-related twitter is expecting Knebel to blow it, which he nearly does by walking the bases loaded before striking out Reyes to end the game.

4-0 under Thomson. 5 in a row overall.

8 wins in a now. They are back at .500. Best start for a new mgr (7-0) since Joe Morgan in ‘88.
In the first 2 innings of the last 2 games combined the Phillies have seen 126 pitches.
145 is about average for a full game

Phillies now 15-2 in their last 17 games, following a 4-11 stretch. This is all despite getting very little offensively from Realmuto and Castellanos.

Entering today: Schwarber, Hoskins, Harper and Matt Vierling all had a June OPS of over 1.050.

Cheese steaks! The liberty bell! "Passionate" fans! I know a pretty gal from one of the suburbs! Yuengling makes great beers! Fuzzy green maskot (I think)! As of yesterday, I love Philadelphia, and I love the Phillies! Goooooo phitin' phils (that's a thing right? I'm pretty sure that's a thing)!
